The purpose of this study was to assess concentration of selected elements (cadmium, zinc, copper, sodium and potassium) in rooster and turkey semen and to find possible correlations between these elements. Samples were analyzed on the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The analysis of cadmium showed that the concentration in rooster is 9.06 +/- 7.70 and in turkey 4.10 +/- 3.59 mu g/mL. In zinc 5.25 +/- 1.96 mu g/mL in rooster and 3.70 +/- 1.26 mu g/mL in turkey were detected. Higher concentration of copper was found in rooster semen (6.79 +/- 6.42 mu g/mL) in comparison with turkey semen (4.29 +/- 5.43 mu g/mL). The level of sodium (3.96 +/- 1.02 mu g/mL; 3.14 +/- 0.85 mu g/mL) and potassium (2.88 +/- 0.65 mu g/mL; 3.42 +/- 1.41 mu g/mL) was very similar in both species. Correlation analysis detected high positive correlation between cadmium and zinc (r = 0.701) in rooster and between sodium and potassium (r = 0.899) in turkey semen.

Epicatechin Prevents Cryocapacitation of Bovine Spermatozoa through Antioxidant Activity and Stabilization of Transmembrane Ion Channels

Stefan Banas, Filip Benko, Michal Duracka, Norbert Lukac, Eva Tvrda

Summary: EPC has been shown to improve the quality parameters of cryopreserved bovine sperm, reduce the proportion of capacitated sperm, and decrease the production of reactive oxygen species. Additionally, EPC protects the integrity of the sperm membrane and membrane channels crucial for the sperm capacitation process. These findings suggest that EPC can enhance the structural integrity and functional activity of spermatozoa after cryopreservation.

A Combination of Taurine and Caffeine in Stallion Semen Extender Positively Affects the Spermatozoa Parameters

Marko Halo Jr, Filip Tirpak, Tomas Slanina, Katarina Tokarova, Martin Massanyi, Lucia Dianova, Eva Mlynekova, Agnieszka Gren, Marko Halo, Peter Massanyi

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of different taurine and caffeine combinations on the motility, viability, and oxidative markers of chilled stallion spermatozoa. The results showed that samples treated with the combination of taurine and caffeine significantly improved the motility parameters, without compromising viability or altering redox status. These findings suggest that the combination of taurine and caffeine can be an optimal supplement for improving the quality of stallion semen during chilled storage.

Summary: This research analyzed 21 samples of green Coffea arabica from different locations in Central America, focusing on parameters such as moisture content, water activity, textural features, and color. Results showed that moisture content did not exceed 14%, water activity ranged from 0.391 to 0.582, and there was a significant positive correlation between moisture content and water activity. Additionally, a negative correlation between water activity and fracturability was observed.

Toxicity of Bisphenol A and its Replacements in the Mice Leydig Cells In Vitro

Tomas Jambor, Nikola Knizatova, Hana Greifova, Anton Kovacik, Norbert Lukac

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the potential impacts of bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues BPB, BPF, and BPS on mice TM3 Leydig cells, focusing on basal cell viability parameters such as metabolic activity, cell membrane integrity, and lysosomal activity after 48-h exposure. The study also evaluated the effects of bisphenols on ROS production, gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC), and testosterone secretion. The results showed that activity started at 10 pg/ml of bisphenols after 48-h exposure, and significant ROS production was observed at 5 and 10 pg/ml. Moreover, a significant inhibition of GJIC was confirmed at 10, 25, and 50 pg/ml.

Summary: Garlic, used as both food and traditional medicine, was analyzed for its nutritional properties and chemical composition in this study. Research on traditional crops like garlic is important as modern consumers seek foods with positive effects on human health and knowledge of these properties can support cultivation of cultivars with the highest content of bioactive compounds.

Summary: The impacts of iron enrichment and overload on the ultrastructural characteristics of human adrenocarcinoma NCIH295R cell line were evaluated. It was found that both untreated and iron-exposed cell populations exhibited similar ultrastructural features related to the steroidogenic process. However, low concentration of iron showed beneficial effects on the ultrastructural organization of the cells, while high concentration did not induce obvious modifications.

Summary: Coffee processing contributes significantly to food and product waste. Utilizing coffee co-products can address environmental issues, nutritionally unbalanced foods, population growth, and food-related diseases. This research examined the quality and sensory parameters of cascara (coffee husks) and silverskin from different botanical origins, revealing their potential as valuable sources of TAC, fiber, and other beneficial compounds. The sensory evaluation, however, indicated that none of the samples met the acceptable index value of 70%.

Screening of Toxic Effects of Neonicotinoid Insecticides with a Focus on Acetamiprid: A Review

Lucia Zuscikova, Denis Bazany, Hana Greifova, Nikola Knizatova, Anton Kovacik, Norbert Lukac, Tomas Jambor

Summary: Neonicotinoids are widely used insecticides in crop protection due to their high toxicity to pests and ease of application, but their persistent nature and systemic spread raise concerns about environmental contamination and non-target organism toxicity. Acetamiprid, a new generation insecticide with low toxicity to honeybees, is considered a safer alternative. However, extensive usage of acetamiprid has also negatively impacted non-target animals. This review summarizes animal studies that investigated the toxicity of specific neonicotinoids, highlighting reproductive system disruptions and metabolic changes in both male and female organisms.
