Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of Clostridium Difficile Infection (CDI) in general surgery patients. Patients who underwent general surgery operations were analyzed, and it was found that older age, emergent operation, increased time to operation, infections at surgical sites, deep organ space infections, steroid use, metastatic cancer, smoking, and decreased body mass index (BMI) were independent predictors of CDI.

Summary: In a nationwide study among adults in Denmark, it was found that the use of PPIs is associated with a moderately increased risk of community-associated Clostridium difficile infection. The elevated risk remained up to 1 year after the end of PPI treatment.

Summary: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) pose a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, and their risk factors are associated with COVID-19 severity and mortality. This study investigated the NCD risk profile among university employees in Indonesia and its relationship with contracting COVID-19. The findings revealed a high prevalence of NCD risk factors among university administrative employees, which increased their susceptibility to COVID-19. The study highlights the urgent need for a behavioral intervention program to manage NCD risk factors at the university level.

Summary: This study found a significant correlation between a body mass index (BMI) >= 24 kg/m(2) and the recurrence of herpetic stromal keratitis (HSK). Overweight and obesity were revealed as risk factors for HSK recurrence in patients receiving long-term antiviral prophylaxis.

Summary: Nosocomial infections with Clostridioides difficile have emerged as a serious health threat. This study aimed to identify risk factors for C. difficile infection beyond the well-known factors. It found that regular consumption of proton pump inhibitors, low vegetable intake, and the use of the diuretic agent torasemid were additional risk factors for CDI.

Summary: Based on a nationwide health insurance database, this study investigated the impact of body weight status on the risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). The study found that obesity, as measured by body-mass index (BMI) and waist circumference, was initially associated with increased risk of SCA, but this association disappeared after adjusting for other risk factors. The findings suggest that considering metabolic disorders, demographics, and social habits may provide better understanding and prevention of SCA.

Summary: Excess body fatness is associated with various health outcomes, including premature mortality, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and different types of cancer. Expert panels have concluded that there is sufficient evidence linking excess body fatness to 13 types of cancer, including esophageal adenocarcinoma, gastric cardia, colon and rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, meningioma, postmenopausal breast, endometrium, ovary, kidney, thyroid, and multiple myeloma. Given that these cancers account for approximately 40% of all cancers and the high prevalence of overweight or obesity in the US population, maintaining a healthy body weight throughout life is crucial for cancer prevention.

Summary: This study in women from Mozambique found that multiparity was protective for hormone receptor-positive and HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer, while higher educational level increased risk across all subtypes. Higher weight and BMI were associated with increased breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women but were protective in premenopausal women. Higher height increased the risk of HR-negative tumors in postmenopausal women.

Summary: Obesity is linked to various types of cancer, and the distribution of fat, which varies between sexes, has been suggested to be an independent risk factor. However, there is limited research on the sex-specific effects on cancer risk. In this study, we examined the effects of fat accumulation and distribution on cancer risk in both females and males. Our findings showed that adiposity traits were associated with most cancer types, and fat accumulation had a greater association with cancer compared to fat distribution. Additionally, the effects of fat accumulation or distribution on colorectal, esophageal, and liver cancer differed between sexes.

Summary: The study found that hypertension remained stable among men with normal weight but decreased among men with obesity. Total diabetes and raised total cholesterol increased among adults with obesity, indicating the importance of national prevention efforts to combat the public health impact of excess adiposity.

Summary: The prevalence of overweight among Malaysian adults is 50.1% according to a study based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2019. Factors associated with an increased risk of overweight include female gender, ages 30-59 years, being Malay, Indian or other Bumiputera, being married, and having adequate health literacy. Overweight individuals also face a higher risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Intervention programs should be implemented to address this issue, focusing on high-risk populations.

Summary: This study examined the association between weight status and trajectory of cognitive decline in older adults in China. The results showed that weight status was related to the rate of global cognitive decline, with slower decline observed in individuals classified as having obesity.
