Introduction: Internal inflammatory root resorption is regarded as rare because it is only occasionally detected in clinical or radiographic examination of teeth. However, inflammation is supposedly an important etiologic factor of internal resorption. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that there is no difference in the presence of internal resorption between teeth with vital, healthy pulp and teeth with a history of pulp inflammation. Methods: Thirty teeth with no previous root canal treatment that were to be sequentially extracted from adult patients were diagnosed for their pulpal status (ie, healthy, pulpitis, or necrosis). After extraction, the teeth were split buccolingually, and both halves were exposed to 6% sodium hypochlorite for 10 minutes under constant shaking to remove all organic debris covering the root canal walls. The specimens were washed in water and prepared for scanning electron microscopy to examine the root canals for the presence of internal resorption. Results: The null hypothesis of this study was rejected. None of the 9 teeth with healthy pulps revealed signs of internal resorption. Four of the 8 teeth with pulpitis (50%) and 10 of the 13 teeth with necrotic pulps (77%) had internal resorption (P <.01). The average number of resorptive lesions in the affected necrotic teeth was 2.4, whereas in teeth with pulpitis and internal resorption, the average number of lesions was 1.25. The amount of resorption was always <100-mu m deep; the length of the lesions varied from 200 mu m to >1 mm. Most lesions (15) were detected in the middle third of the root, followed by the apical third (13). Only 1 internal resorptive lesion was detected in the coronal third of the root canal. Conclusions: Internal resorption was a frequent finding in teeth with pulp inflammation or necrosis. (J Endod 2012;38:24-27)

Comparison of the effects from coronal pre-flaring and glide-path preparation on torque generation during root canal shaping procedure

Sang Won Kwak, Jung-Hong Ha, Ya Shen, Markus Haapasalo, Hyeon-Cheol Kim

Summary: Glide-path preparation and coronal pre-flaring can reduce torque generation, which is advantageous for reducing stress and reactive forces to NiTi files and root dentin.

Antimicrobial effects of agitational irrigation on single- and multispecies biofilms in dentin canals

Summary: This study compared the antibacterial effects of different agitation devices on single- and multispecies biofilms in dentin canals. The results showed that agitating NaOCl can more effectively kill biofilms. EDDY was as effective as PUI when combined with NaOCl, but the antimicrobial efficiency in the apical portion was still a concern.

A novel model to evaluate the fatigue resistance of NiTi instruments: Rotational and axial movement at body temperature

Summary: A dynamic model was developed to evaluate the fatigue resistance of instruments at body temperature. The study found that the combination of rotational and axial movement led to greater fatigue resistance compared to rotational movement alone. Additionally, the curvature near the apex had a greater impact on fatigue resistance than curvatures in the coronal and middle thirds.

Summary: This review discusses the effects of various types of scaffold materials on cell-scaffold interaction in tissue engineering. It elaborates on the influence of the physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of scaffold materials on cell-scaffold interaction. The review also examines the role of scaffold components, degradation process, and degraded products in cell-scaffold interactions. Furthermore, it summarizes the latest research progress on cell-scaffold interactions among various engineered tissues or organs in the oral and craniofacial region.

Epigallocatechin-3-gallate/mineralization precursors co-delivery hollow mesoporous nanosystem for synergistic manipulation of dentin exposure

Summary: As a global public health focus, oral health plays a vital role in overall health. Defected teeth with exposed dentin increase the risk of oral diseases such as hypersensitivity and inflammation. The E/PA@HMS nanosystem effectively occludes dentinal tubules, inhibits biofilm formation, induces collagen mineralization, and promotes odontogenic differentiation and mineralization of dental pulp cells. Animal experiments demonstrate its long-lasting effects in sealing tubules and inhibiting biofilm growth. This nanosystem shows promising benefits for protecting exposed dentin.

Sodium hypochlorite against Enterococcus faecalis biofilm in dentinal tubules: effect of concentration, temperature, and exposure time

He Liu, Stefanie Nio, Ya Shen

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite at various exposure times and temperatures against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms in human dentinal tubules. The results showed no significant differences in effectiveness between the 2% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solutions at different temperatures or exposure times. Increasing the temperature or exposure time of sodium hypochlorite was found to be more important than raising its concentration to optimize its effectiveness in killing E. faecalis while minimizing potential damage.
