There is a lack of studies regarding EMG temporal analysis during dynamic and complex motor tasks, such as golf swing. The aim of this study is to analyze the EMG onset during the golf swing, by comparing two different threshold methods. Method A threshold was determined using the baseline activity recorded between two maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Method B threshold was calculated using the mean EMG activity for 1000 ms before the 500 ms prior to the start of the Backswing. Two different clubs were also studied. Three-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare methods, muscles and clubs. Two-way mixed Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) with absolute agreement was used to determine the methods reliability. Club type usage showed no influence in onset detection. Rectus abdominis (RA) showed the higher agreement between methods. Erector spinae (ES), on the other hand, showed a very low agreement, that might be related to postural activity before the swing. External oblique (EO) is the first being activated, at 1295 ms prior impact. There is a similar activation time between right and left muscles sides, although the right EO showed better agreement between methods than left side. Therefore, the algorithms usage is task-and muscle-dependent. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Postural control is altered in females with excessive medial knee displacement

Joao R. Vaz, Nick Stergiou, Ana Diniz, Ricardo Dinis, Pedro Pezarat-Correia

Summary: Knee valgus motion during landing tasks is suggested as a predictor of future knee injury. Excessive medial knee displacement (MKD) leads to greater randomness in centre of pressure (CoP) fluctuations, indicating decreased ability to adapt to environmental demands and an increased risk of injury.

Torque Regulation Is Influenced by the Nature of the Isometric Contraction

Philipp Bauer, Joao Sa Gomes, Joao Oliveira, Paulo Santos, Pedro Pezarat-Correia, Joao R. Vaz

Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the effects of a continuous visual feedback and the isometric contraction nature on the complexity and variability of force. Results showed that the push isometric task with visual feedback (P-visual) had higher complexity and decreased variability compared to the other tasks. There were no significant differences between the hold isometric task without visual feedback (Hnon-visual) and the hold isometric task with visual feedback (H-visual). These findings suggested that different motor control strategies were induced by the two isometric tasks, and the influence of visual feedback depended on the type of isometric task.

Effects of Motor Task Difficulty on Postural Control Complexity during Dual Tasks in Young Adults: A Nonlinear Approach

Marina Saraiva, Joao Paulo Vilas-Boas, Orlando J. Fernandes, Maria Antonio Castro

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the effect of two motor tasks with different difficulty levels on the static standing posture in healthy young adults. The results showed that performing a concurrent difficult motor task led to impaired postural control, reduced complexity, and adaptability compared to a postural single task and a concurrent easy motor task.

Accuracy and Interpretation of the Acceleration from an Inertial Measurement Unit When Applied to the Sprint Performance of Track and Field Athletes

Paulo Miranda-Oliveira, Marco Branco, Orlando Fernandes

Summary: In this study, a developed instrument encompassing an IMU was used to assess sprinting and analyze athlete performance. The number of steps, ground contact time, flight time, and step time were determined using a high-speed camera as a reference. The acceleration components and acceleration ratio were correlated with the performance achieved in each split time. The study revealed that the IMU device had high accuracy in identifying step counts and showed a correlation between step time and performance. The importance rating for this study is 8 out of 10.

Effect of Time-Restricted Eating and Resistance Training on High-Speed Strength and Body Composition

Joana M. Correia, Paulo D. G. Santos, Pedro Pezarat-Correia, Claudia S. Minderico, Jorge Infante, Goncalo V. Mendonca

Summary: This study compared the effects of resistance training combined with time-restricted eating (TRE) and habitual diet on body composition and strength performance in trained young males. Both interventions resulted in decreased fat mass, but no changes in fat-free mass. Non-TRE was associated with better lower body jump performance, while TRE led to higher peak force and dynamic strength in the upper body. These findings suggest that the combination of TRE and resistance training may be beneficial for upper body high-speed strength, but not lower body training.

Stride-to-Stride Fluctuations of Human Gait Are Affected By Chronobiology: An Exploratory Study

Joao R. Vaz, Luis M. Silva, Nick Stergiou

Summary: Physiological processes exhibit circadian rhythms with approximately 24-hour oscillations. Motor performance and walking can be affected by these rhythms. This study explores how the fluctuations in healthy gait, which have a fractal-like structure, are influenced by the time of day and chronotype.

Effects of Different Basketball Shooting Positions and Distances on Gaze Behavior and Shooting Accuracy

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the differences in visual behavior of basketball players at different shooting positions and angles. Tobii Pro Glasses 3 was used to measure the number and duration of fixations on the target during shooting. Results showed statistically significant differences in fixations, duration, and accuracy between different shooting distances. There were no significant differences between different shooting angles. Shooting accuracy was higher when the athlete focused on the target for a longer time, particularly in free throw shooting.

Effect of the Law Enforcement Duty Belt on Muscle Activation during Hip Hinging Movements in Young, Healthy Adults

James W. Kearney, Megan N. Sax van der Weyden, Nelson Cortes, Orlando Fernandes, Joel R. Martin

Summary: Sixty percent of law enforcement officers experience low back pain, with the duty belt commonly reported as a contributing factor. A study found that the duty belt does not alter muscular activity during hip hinging or lifting objects from the ground, and the tactical vest is perceived as more comfortable and less restrictive.

Muscular and Prefrontal Cortex Activity during Dual-Task Performing in Young Adults

Marina Saraiva, Maria Antonio Castro, Joao Paulo Vilas-Boas

Summary: Postural control relies on both automatic processes and attentional resources. The dual-task paradigm can be used to examine how the performance of motor and/or cognitive tasks interfere with each other. Studies have shown that when individuals perform two tasks simultaneously, postural stability can decrease due to the attention resources needed for task performance. However, the cortical and muscular activity patterns during dual-task performance are not well understood.

Effects of an 11-Week Detraining, Imposed by the COVID-19 Confinement, on Handball Players' Shoulder Rotator Isokinetic Profile, Shoulder Range of Motion, and Ball Release Velocity

Nuno Batalha, Joao Paulo Sousa, Orlando Fernandes, Eduardo Dias, Jose A. Parraca, Santos Villafaina

Summary: The COVID-19 confinement had significant impact on the physical condition of handball players, particularly in terms of shoulder rotator and range of motion. The study found that the 11-week detraining period imposed by the pandemic resulted in reduced peak torque, increased fatigue index, and decreased range of motion in the shoulder rotator. Furthermore, the ball release velocity during both standing and jump shots was significantly reduced. Strengthening and recovering the shoulder rotator and range of motion seems necessary to prevent shoulder injuries after a detraining period.
