Summary: Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change. Perennial grain cropping systems have shown potential in increasing soil organic matter through no-tillage management and extensive root growth. However, the addition of nitrogen fertilizer may diminish carbon sequestration in these systems.

Summary: The study found that different soil textures have different impacts on the retention and utilization of nitrogen fertilizer by crops. The distribution and dynamics of fertilizer nitrogen among different soil organic nitrogen fractions vary in soils of different textures, influencing crop growth differently.

Summary: Organic substitution is an effective approach to address soil degradation caused by excessive chemical fertilizer use. This study evaluated the effects of different organic substitution proportions on saline-sodic soil properties and sunflower growth, and recommended a 50% organic substitution ratio for optimal results.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of N fertilizer on soil microbial residues and their contribution to SOC and TN. The results showed that N fertilizer increased bacterial residual carbon content and enhanced soil enzyme activities. The contribution of bacterial residual carbon to SOC and TN increased with N fertilizer addition but decreased with decreasing aggregate size.

Summary: Over the past few decades, the importance of soil organic carbon (SOC) and mineral nitrogen (N-min) in agroecosystems, particularly nitrates (NO3-), has been widely recognized due to their crucial roles in soil fertility, crop productivity, environmental quality, and/or climate change mitigation and adaptation. In this study conducted in Polish arable lands, the contents of organic carbon, ammonium, and nitrate in soils were evaluated according to different pH levels, texture, and fertilization rates. The results indicated that soil pH and texture, as well as mineral and organic fertilization, significantly influenced SOC content, while the same factors, except organic amendments, significantly affected mineral nitrogen concentration.

Summary: Various environmental factors and anthropogenic practices can affect the Fe biogeochemical cycles in soils. Nitrogen and carbon states are closely associated with Fe dynamics. This study investigated the Fe fraction and distribution, as well as the link between Fe and nitrogen/carbon, in bulk soil and in soil aggregates. The results showed that the long-term application of nitrogen fertilizer increased the contents of water-soluble iron (Ws-Fe) and carbonate-bound iron (Ca-Fe), while the long-term application of organic fertilizer decreased the contents of Ws-Fe and Ca-Fe. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between Fe and nitrogen/carbon in soil.

Summary: The study found that kiwifruit production may help increase soil organic carbon and nitrogen stocks in deeper layers, but there was no significant difference in total organic carbon and nitrogen stocks to a depth of 2 m compared to pasture land use. Labile water extractable pools of organic carbon were lower under kiwifruit in the topsoil, corresponding to lower nitrogen stocks and a higher soil C:N ratio at that depth. Further research on the dynamics of subsoil organic carbon pools is needed to understand the impact of perennial horticultural crops on subsoil carbon storage.

Summary: Afforestation of marginal cultivated land with Norway spruce did not significantly affect soil organic carbon stocks after 50 years. There were significant differences in soil properties among different land uses, but the impact on SOC stocks was minimal.

Summary: The excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer leads to lower nitrogen efficiency and increased nitrogen loss to groundwater. Different forms of nitrogen were studied in leachates and soil profiles under various fertilizer treatments, with urea and manure resulting in higher losses of dissolved organic nitrogen and increased abundance of relevant microorganisms in deep soil layers.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of five years of winter cover cropping on soil organic carbon and nitrogen storage in a corn-soybean rotation in Nebraska. The results showed that cover cropping did not affect gaseous and leaching losses, as well as bulk soil organic carbon and nitrogen storage, but had a positive effect on the amount of water-extractable organic matter.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are influenced by global changes like nitrogen fertilization, elevated CO2, warming, and increased precipitation. Particulate organic carbon (POC) is more responsive in the short-term, while nitrogen fertilization has a dominant impact on increasing SOC. Long-term experiments and individual studies on different forms of organic carbon responses to global changes are crucial for a better understanding of SOC dynamics.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of rainwater infiltration and nutrient recharge (RINR) on soil water, organic carbon, total nitrogen storage and vegetation growth in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Results showed that the RINR system significantly increased soil water storage and had a higher restoration effect on soil organic carbon and total nitrogen compared to other treatments. In addition, the RINR system enhanced the growth of degraded revegetation, including the height, crown width, and annual branch length of the trees. Overall, the RINR system is an effective approach for slope vegetation restoration in arid and semi-arid areas with shallowly buried soft bedrock.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of organic fertilizer application and subsurface drainage on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from saline soil. The results showed that a smaller spacing or a higher replacement proportion of organic fertilizer reduced cumulative N2O emissions. Additionally, the use of organic fertilizer increased nitrogen uptake and yield of sunflowers while decreasing soil salinity.
