In occupational and sports physiology, reduction of neuromuscular efficiency (NME) and elevation of amplitude characteristics, such as root mean square (RMS) or integral of surface electromyographic (EMG) signals detected during fatiguing submaximal contraction are often related to changes in neural drive. However, there is data showing changes in the EMG integral (I-EMG) and RMS due to peripheral factors. Causes for these changes are not fully understood. On the basis of computer simulation, we demonstrate that lengthening of intracellular action potential (IAP) profile typical for fatiguing contraction could affect EMG amplitude characteristics stronger than alteration in neural drive (central factors) defined by number of active motor units (MUs) and their firing rates. Thus, relation of these EMG amplitude characteristics only to central mechanisms can be misleading. It was also found that to discriminate between changes in RMS or I-EMG due to alterations in neural drive from changes due to alterations in peripheral factors it is better to normalize RMS of EMG signals to the RMS of M-wave. In massive muscles, such normalization is more appropriate than normalization to either peak-to-peak amplitude or area of M-wave proposed in literature. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Pistacia lentiscus by-product as a promising source of phenolic compounds and carotenoids: Purification, biological potential and binding properties

Amina Maalej, Wiem Elloumi, Ivan Angelov, Proletina Kardaleva, Vladimir Dimitrov, Mohamed Chamkha, Maya Guncheva, Sami Sayadi

Summary: In this study, pure compounds including Quercitrin and Loliolid were successfully isolated from the distilled leaves of Pistacia lentiscus. Quercitrin showed stronger inhibitory effects on enzyme activity and fibril formation compared to Loliolid, indicating its potential for commercial application in cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals. The binding mode of Quercitrin and Loliolid to Bovine Serum Albumin was also characterized as a static process with conformational changes in BSA.

1,2-Disubstituted Planar Chiral Ferrocene Derivatives from Sulfonamide-Directed ortho-Lithiation: Synthesis, Absolute Configuration, and Chiroptical Properties

Martin Ravutsov, Georgi M. Dobrikov, Miroslav Dangalov, Rositsa Nikolova, Vladimir Dimitrov, Giuseppe Mazzeo, Giovanna Longhi, Sergio Abbate, Lorenzo Paoloni, Marco Fuse, Vincenzo Barone

Summary: A series of 1,2-disubstituted planar chiral ferrocenes were successfully synthesized through ortho-directed lithiation of chiral ferrocenesulfonamides and reaction with electrophilic reactants. The relative configurations of chemical groups were determined by NMR experiments and X-ray crystallography, while experimental ECD and VCD spectra were recorded and interpreted using quantum chemical computations.

Three-Component Betti Condensation for Synthesis of Aminomethylnaphthols Incorporating Deoxy-isoequilenine Scaffold-Absolute Configuration and Application

Irena Zagranyarska, Kalina Kostova, Krasimira Dikova, Boris Shivachev, Vladimir Dimitrov

Summary: Chiral aminomethylnaphthols have been synthesized using steroidal 2-naphthol analogue prepared from estrone via three-component `Betti condensation. By choosing appropriate aldehyde and chiral amine components, structurally diverse aminomethylnaphthols could be obtained. The absolute configurations of the synthesized aminomethylnaphthols were determined using advanced NMR experiments and confirmed by X-ray crystallography. These chiral steroidal aminomethylnaphthols showed good catalytic activity in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes.
