CARD9 deficiency predisposing chromoblastomycosis: A case report and comparative transcriptome study

Summary: This study reports a case of chromoblastomycosis caused by Phialophora expanda in a patient with a CARD9 mutation. Comparative transcriptome analysis revealed that P. expanda has stronger immunogenicity and is more prone to forming sclerotic bodies compared to P. americana. These findings suggest that fungal specificity, in addition to host defense, contributes to the clinical phenotype in CARD9 deficient patients with dematiaceous fungal infections.

Challenges towards management of CARD9-deficient patients with phaeohyphomycosis: A case report and case series study

Summary: This study followed up on 10 CARD9-deficient patients with recalcitrant phaeohyphomycosis and analyzed their clinical presentations, laboratory findings, treatment, and prognosis. It was found that seven CARD9 mutations were present in these patients and that immune cells exhibited impaired responses to fungus-specific stimulation. The study concluded that patients with early-onset, unexplained, and recalcitrant phaeohyphomycosis should be analyzed for CARD9 mutations and immune deficiency, and management strategies should be adjusted based on clinical presentations and patient responses.

Ceramide kinase knockout ameliorates multiple sclerosis-like behaviors and demyelination in cuprizone-treated mice

Summary: Changes in sphingolipid metabolism in the brain can affect various cellular functions. In this study, we investigated the roles of CerK and C1P in multiple sclerosis. Our results showed that CerK knockout improved motor dysfunction and demyelination in a multiple sclerosis mouse model. Additionally, CerK knockout also had an impact on gender differences in mice.

Integrated multiomics analysis reveals changes in liver physiological function in Aqp9 gene knockout mice

Summary: Aquaporin 9 (AQP9) is a crucial channel for the entry of blood glycerol into the liver, and it plays important roles in regulating osmotic pressure and energy metabolism. Previous studies have shown that AQP9 is involved in the development of various liver diseases. In this study, Aqp9 knockout mice were used to investigate the molecular effects of AQP9 expression on liver tissue. The knockout of Aqp9 affected glycerol metabolism, leading to reduced body weight, hepatocyte death, inflammatory cell infiltration, and immune and inflammatory responses.

Temperature-Dependent Effects of Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) on Browning of Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue in UCP1 Knockout Male Mice

Summary: Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a central player in thermogenic tissues, but eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) can induce thermogenic effects independently of UCP1. In this study, the impact of ambient temperature on EPA-induced thermogenesis in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) was investigated in both wild-type (WT) and UCP1 knockout (KO) male mice. The results showed that the thermogenic effects of EPA occurred in a temperature-dependent manner and were independent of UCP1 in SAT-derived adipocytes.

The attenuating effect of vitamin C on neutrophil infiltration in the liver is associated with its protective effect on ethanol-mediated intestinal damage in vitamin C-deficient ethanol-fed mice.

Probability Distribution Characteristics and Statistical Parameters of the Horizontal Stiffness of Rubber Isolation Bearings

Summary: This study investigates the distribution characteristics of the horizontal stiffness of rubber bearings and its influence on the seismic performance of isolation structures. An optimization method to reduce the variation of bearing stiffness is proposed, and statistical analysis and probability distribution tests are conducted based on the equivalent shear stiffness samples of 224 rubber bearings. The results show that the stiffness follows the I-type minimum-value distribution. The study concludes that the probability distribution form of the rubber bearings stiffness has a certain influence on the adjustment coefficient of the isolation structure, but the damping effect of the structure still has sufficient safety reserve.

Experimental and numerical investigation of large-scale precast sandwich wall structures with friction devices

Summary: The quasi-static tests on precast sandwich wall structures with friction devices showed that the structures remained elastic and well-protected. Finite element analysis demonstrated that increasing the frictional force could enhance energy dissipation and lateral load resistance, but also led to larger residual displacements. Additionally, self-centering capability could be improved by increasing posttensioning force.

CFD-CFD coupling: A novel method to develop a fast urban microclimate model

Summary: CFD technique is known for its ability to model cross-ventilation and is often coupled with energy simulation programs for building energy calculation. A high-resolution CFD microclimate model requires a large number of cells to capture environment complexity, making the coupling process with other tools challenging. The proposed CFDf-CFDc-BES coupling method is significantly faster and more stable than traditional methods, achieving quicker convergence.

Clinical and Pathological Characteristics of 755 Patients with Skin Cancers in Hainan, China: A 12-Year Retrospective Study

Summary: This study analyzed the clinical-pathological characteristics of skin cancers in patients visited at the Department of Dermatology of the Fifth People's Hospital of Hainan Province from China. Basal cell carcinoma was found to be the most common type of skin cancer, occurring mainly in individuals aged 40 to 79 years and primarily located in the head, face, and neck region. The concordance rate between clinical and pathological diagnosis of skin cancers was relatively low.

Central retina changes in Parkinson's disease: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: The central retina thickness, the combination of ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer thickness, and nerve fiber layer thickness were significantly decreased in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, there was no significant difference in the thickness of the inner nuclear layer, outer plexiform layer, and outer nuclear layer between the eyes of PD patients and controls. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression results were consistent with the main findings.
