Nasalance and perceived voice changes in patients undergoing septoplasty and turbinate hypertrophy reduction

Konstantinos Valsamidis, Athanasia Printza, Jannis Constantinidis, Areti Okalidou, Stefanos Triaridis

Summary: The study found that septoplasty and inferior turbinate hypertrophy reduction can improve voice nasality and voice-related quality of life. After surgery, there were no significant differences in nasality and voice-related quality of life scores between patients and controls. However, the severity of nasal obstruction symptoms and psychological status significantly affect patients' perceptual assessment of the impact of voice performance on their quality of life.

Swallowing disorders after thyroidectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Chrysoula Vardaxi, Nikolaos Tsetsos, Aikaterini Koliastasi, Alexandros Poutoglidis, Konstantinos Sapalidis, Stefanos Triaridis, Athanasia Printza

Summary: This systematic review investigates the prevalence of dysphagia after thyroidectomy and finds that swallowing impairment significantly increases shortly after surgery but returns to pre-operative levels 2-3 months later. A small proportion of patients still report dysphagia even 1 year after surgery. There is no significant difference between open and endoscopic thyroid surgery at 2-3 months post-surgery.

An approximation method for the prevention of knot formation during catheterization in children

Dionis Totsila, Athena Kontrafouri, Xenophon Sinopidis

Summary: This study aims to minimize knotting during urethral catheterization in children. To prevent knot formation, the nature of knots, specifically the overhand knot, must be understood. By calculating the maximum length of catheter inserted in the bladder without risk of knotting, the minimum length of catheter needed for an overhand knot was estimated. This theoretical approach provides a rough estimation that may contribute to secure catheterization. Adding the calculated length to the appropriate urethral length for gender and age may reduce the risk of knotting.

The Role of Primary Repair of the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve during Thyroid/Parathyroid Surgery in Vocal Outcomes-A Systematic Review

Elisavet Papadopoulou, Konstantinos Sapalidis, Stefanos Triaridis, Athanasia Printza

Summary: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is a common complication of thyroid and parathyroid surgery, affecting the quality of life of patients. Intraoperative repair of the RLN has shown to improve phonatory function and voice quality, making it a viable alternative to traditional techniques with better long-term results. However, it is not widely used in clinical practice and should be considered if possible.

Summary: This study analyzed bacterial cultures from the appendix and peritoneal cavity of 72 children who underwent appendectomy, and found that Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Streptococcus species were the most common pathogens. The same microorganisms were often found in both the appendiceal lumen and the peritoneal cavity of patients with complicated appendicitis. Gram-negative bacteria and polymicrobial cultures in the peritoneal fluid and appendiceal lumen were associated with complicated appendicitis. Polymicrobial cultures in the peritoneal cavity presented a four times higher risk of complicated appendicitis.

Ceftriaxone Administration Associated with Lithiasis in Children: Guilty or Not? A Systematic Review

Aspasia Louta, Aimilia Kanellopoulou, Loukia Alexopoulou Prounia, Mathiou Filippas, Faidra Foteini Tsami, Athanasios Vlachodimitropoulos, Antonios Vezakis, Andreas Polydorou, Ioannis Georgopoulos, Despoina Gkentzi, Ioannis Spyridakis, Ageliki Karatza, Xenophon Sinopidis

Summary: Lithiasis is a known side effect of ceftriaxone administration in children, and various factors such as sex, age, weight, dosage, and duration of intake can contribute to the formation of calcification or stones in the bile and urine excretory systems. This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of ceftriaxone administration in pediatric patients, including the likelihood of gallstones, nephroliths, or precipitations in both biliary and urinary systems, and explore the relationship with maternal history during pregnancy. Results from 33 appropriate articles suggest that more randomized control studies with long-term outcomes are needed to determine the exact association between ceftriaxone and lithiasis in children.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an eight-week training protocol paired with accuracy tasks and swallowing exercises in improving tongue strength and swallowing in patients after tongue resection. The results showed significant improvements in maximum isometric pressures, endurance, and swallowing pressures, as well as symptom and function assessments, in the treatment group compared to the follow-up control group.

Summary: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is an acute complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and occasionally type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), characterized by hyperglycemia, ketonemia and/or ketonuria, and acidemia. Clinical symptoms include dehydration, tachypnea, gastrointestinal symptoms, and reduced level of consciousness, often preceded by polyuria, polydipsia, and weight loss. This review aims to summarize potential pitfalls in the diagnosis and management of DKA.

Post-Traumatic Stress as a Psychological Effect of Mild Head Injuries in Children

Xenophon Sinopidis, Panagiotis Kallianezos, Constantinos Petropoulos, Despoina Gkentzi, Eirini Kostopoulou, Sotirios Fouzas, Theodore Dassios, Aggeliki Vervenioti, Ageliki Karatza, Stylianos Roupakias, Antonios Panagidis, Evangelos Blevrakis, Eleni Jelastopulu

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the stress of children with mild head injuries and their parents' relevant perception during the early post-traumatic period. Results showed that 33.7% of children and 19.0% of parents were diagnosed with stress after one week, and 9.9% of children and 3.9% of parents after one month. It indicates that mild head injuries can have an impact on the emotional well-being of children and should not be overlooked.

Infantile hemangiomas screening modalities for primary care physicians

Stylianos Roupakias, Eirini Kostopoulou, Despoina Gkentzi, Sotirios Fouzas, Xenophon Sinopidis

Summary: Infantile hemangiomas are common benign vascular tumors in children that often undergo spontaneous regression but can also result in complications. Predicting their evolution is challenging due to their heterogeneity. This review highlights the difficulties in early clinical evaluation, particularly for primary care providers, and emphasizes the importance of practical scoring tools for referral and consultation.

Is It Safe to Stay at Home? Parents' Perceptions of Child Home Injuries during the COVID-19 Lockdown

Eirini Papachristou, Savas Deftereos, Panagoula Oikonomou, Konstantina Bekiaridou, Soultana Foutzitzi, Ioannis Gogoulis, Xenophon Sinopidis, Konstantinos Romanidis, Alexandra Tsaroucha, Katerina Kambouri

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and stay-at-home regulations have led to an increase in child injuries at home in Greece. This study examines the types and frequency of these injuries during the COVID-19 lockdown, as well as parents' suggestions for preventing such injuries. The survey was conducted from November to December 2021 and involved parents completing an anonymous questionnaire. The findings reveal that 39.3% of parents reported an increase in accidents at home, with injuries being the most common type. Most accidents occurred indoors and affected children aged 0-4 years. Rural/island areas or suburbs had a higher proportion of child accidents. Accidents were more likely to happen when children were with their grandparents, nanny, or alone, compared to being with their parents. Parents who had difficulty supervising their children experienced more accidents, while those who knew how to provide a safe home did not report an increase in accidents.
