Objectives: Evaluate color and translucency of both non-colored and colored zirconia ceramics and compare them with corresponding properties of human dentine. Methods: 0.5 mm thick samples of human (MSHD) and bovine (MSBD) dentine were obtained from 5 extracted human anterior maxillary teeth and 5 bovine incisors, respectively. The zirconia systems evaluated (0.5 mm samples) were: (1) IPS e.max (R) ZirCAD sintered samples: (a) regular (ZC1); (b) colored - coloring liquid CL2 (ZC2); (2) LAVA (TM) Zirconia sintered samples: (a) regular (LV1); (b) colored - coloring liquid FS3 (LV2). Translucency parameter (TP) and Delta E*(ab) and Delta E-00 color differences (with respect to the MSHD) were calculated. Spectral reflectance curves were compared using the VAF coefficient. Results: Reflectance spectral behaviour of MSBD and MSHD were similar (VAF = 99.3%). All zirconia samples showed higher spectral reflectance values than the MSHD. Lightness values obtained for all zirconia ceramics (especially LV) were higher than MSHD and MSBD. The range of color differences, with respect to MSHD, was 6.9-20.5 for Delta E*(ab) and 4.9-15.6 for Delta E-00. Colored samples showed lower color differences with respect to MSHD. The highest TP values were found for IPS e.max (R) ZirCAD system and the lowest for LAVA (TM) Zirconia system. In terms of translucency, MSHD, MSBD and zirconia ceramics showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusions: In terms of translucency, the studied zirconia systems could satisfactorily replace the human dentine within a dental restoration but, in order to produce a clinically acceptable match, it is necessary to carefully adjust the color of these systems. Coverage error of three resin composite systems to vital unrestored maxillary anterior teeth

Sofia Diamantopoulou, William M. Johnston, Razvan Ghinea, Efstratios Papazoglou

Summary: The objective of this study was to define the color of anterior teeth of a selected population and correlate it with the color of all possible enamel-dentine combinations of three different resin composite systems. The results showed that the color space of the resin composite systems did not fully match the color range of anterior teeth. It was suggested to use 0.5 mm enamel thickness when building layered restorations for better color coverage.

Bibiana Gabardo Perez, Bruna Gaidarji, Danielle Zorzo Righes, Oscar E. Pecho, Gabriel Kalil Rocha Pereira, Leticia Brandao Durand

Summary: This study aimed to summarize the existing evidence on the masking ability of resin composites. The study found that acceptable masking can be achieved with one layer of opaque shade resin composite or using the layering technique. For the black background, at least 1.0mm-thick opaque shade resin composite is needed to achieve acceptable masking. For the C4 background, acceptable masking can be achieved with one layer of 0.5-1.5mm-thick opaque shade resin composite or by using different combinations of enamel body and dentin shades with a final thickness of 1.5mm.

Summary: The study aimed to develop and assess a color-prediction method for dental resin-based composites with different shades and under different illuminants. The method utilized a non-contact spectroradiometer and second-degree polynomial regression to predict color coordinates. The accuracy of the method was evaluated using the CIEDE2000 total color difference formula. The results showed highly accurate color estimations for different thicknesses of resin-based composites under different illuminations.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the color constancy of dental ceramics under new white LED illuminants proposed by the CIE. The spectral reflectance factors of 18 types of dental ceramics were analyzed to calculate their colors under different illuminants. The color differences between dental ceramics under CIE D65 standard illuminant and various white LED illuminants were calculated using CIEDE2000. The study found that the effect of CIE-proposed LED illuminants on dental ceramic is perceptible and slightly lower than on natural teeth.

Colour stability of 3D-Printed orthodontic brackets using filled resins

Richard Wallach, Jeryl D. English, Audrey Moon, Ralph A. Brock II, Rade D. Paravina, F. Kurtis Kasper

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of common beverages and accelerated aging on the colour stability of filled resins for 3D-printed orthodontic brackets. The results showed that red wine and coffee caused the greatest colour and translucency change, followed by tea, while accelerated aging had the least impact on colour and translucency. Therefore, the 3D-printed resins experienced significant changes in colour and translucency after exposure to staining sources, which may affect their suitability for aesthetic orthodontic brackets.

Bacteria debridement efficacy of two sonic root canal irrigant activation systems

Chang Zeng, Pei Hu, Colin P. Egan, Brian E. Bergeron, Franklin Tay, Jingzhi Ma

Summary: The study compared the bacteria debridement efficacy of the first and second generations of sonic root canal irrigant activation systems. The results showed that activation of 2% NaOCl with either EndoActivator or SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly reduced the overall intracanal bacterial load compared to syringe-side-vented needle delivery. However, delivering 2% NaOCl for 5 minutes using the syringe-side-vented needle produced better bacteria debridement than either sonic agitation system.
