Objectives: Obtaining a perfect aesthetic, especially with the translucent porcelain laminate veneers; shade of the porcelain, type of the resin cement and their long term color stability are important factors to achieve aesthetic success. The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of different resin cement systems and UV ageing on the color of full ceramic laminates with different shades. Methods: 392 discs were made with A1, A3, HO and HT shades of IPS e.max Press with 0.5 mm thickness. Different shades of light cured Variolink Veneer, Ivoclar Vivadent (+3, MO, -3); Rely X Veneer, 3M ESPE (A1, A3, White Opaque, Translucent); and dual cured Maxcem Elite, Kerr (White, Yellow, White Opaque, Clear); and Variolink II, Ivoclar Vivadent (White Opaque, Translucent) resin cements were applied on the porcelain discs with a thickness of 0.1 mm. Color differences of the porcelain substructures after cementation and 300 h (150 kJ/m(2)) of UV ageing test, were examined with a colorimeter (Shade Eye Ex, Shofu, Japan). The results were analysed statistically with Wilcoxon signed-rank and Kruskal-Wallis test. The mean values of L*, a*, and b* were also compared using Paired Sample t-test. Spearman's Rank Correlation test was used to analyse the correlation between ceramics with resin-cemented ceramics after ageing. The data analyses were evaluated at a significance level of p < 0.05 for all individual tests without any adjustment. Results: UV ageing caused significant color change on ceramics and also cemented ceramics (p < 0.05). Whilst L* and a* values decreased, b* values increased after ageing. Discoloration was between 0.8-1.2 Delta E for ceramic discs and 1.4-3.1 Delta E for cemented ceramics. There is no significant difference on the color change of dual or light cured resin cements, which were polymerized beneath the porcelain substructure with 0.5 mm thickness. Although statistically significant differences were observed for all specimens, the magnitudes of the mean color differences were at an acceptable perception level and were considered clinically acceptable (Delta E < 3.5). Conclusions: Resin cements and ageing process influence the color of porcelain laminate veneers. Cementation of laminates with either dual or light-cure resin cements does not effect the long term color stability differently. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Influence of non-thermal plasma systems and two favorable surface treatments on the shear bond strength of PAEKs to composite resin

Summary: This study investigated the effect of non-thermal plasma systems and surface treatment techniques on the surface roughness and shear bond strength of PAEK polymers and veneering composite resin material. Results showed that sulfuric acid etching was more effective for improving SBS in PEEK polymers, while tribochemical silica coating was more effective for PEKK polymers. Additionally, tribochemical silica coating may enhance the SBS values of both polymers, and APB application is beneficial for improving the bonding capacity of PAEKs.

Summary: This study compares the effect of fiber reinforcing methods on the flexural strength and failure modes of indirect composite resins. The results show that fiber reinforcement can improve the flexural strength of indirect composite resins, and different fiber reinforcement methods have similar effects on strength. Additionally, the study found that aging with thermocycling does not affect the flexural strength of fiber-reinforced resin, but can cause catastrophic failures in the material.

Bacteria debridement efficacy of two sonic root canal irrigant activation systems

Chang Zeng, Pei Hu, Colin P. Egan, Brian E. Bergeron, Franklin Tay, Jingzhi Ma

Summary: The study compared the bacteria debridement efficacy of the first and second generations of sonic root canal irrigant activation systems. The results showed that activation of 2% NaOCl with either EndoActivator or SmartLite Pro EndoActivator significantly reduced the overall intracanal bacterial load compared to syringe-side-vented needle delivery. However, delivering 2% NaOCl for 5 minutes using the syringe-side-vented needle produced better bacteria debridement than either sonic agitation system.

Patients' experience with teledentistry compared to conventional follow-up visits in TMD clinic: A pilot study

Summary: The study compares the experience of patients seen using teledentistry with traditional Orofacial Pain and TMD visits. Results indicated a borderline difference in effectively using teledentistry for follow-ups among different age groups, but no significant differences were found in patients' experience between virtual and conventional visits. This suggests that high-quality dental care services can be provided remotely without adversely affecting patient experience or quality of care.

Summary: This study characterized the surface topography and evaluated the biological responses of various cells to a novel 3D-printed dental implant. The surface of the implant showed a highly interconnected porous architecture and roughness, leading to good adhesion and growth of human oral osteoblasts, gingival fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells, and monocytes. These findings suggest that this 3D-printed implant has excellent potential for clinical applications.
