Summary: This study assessed the associations between the oral microbiome and caries risk factors in children, and characterized the microbial communities in saliva and dental plaque before clinical diagnosis of caries. The findings showed that the oral microbiome was influenced by factors such as antibiotic use, demographics, and dietary habits. Up to 3 years prior to clinical caries detection, the oral microbial communities were already in a dysbiotic state dominated by proteolytic taxa.

Summary: This study investigates the structural organization of microbial aggregates in human saliva and their role in biofilm formation. It reveals that preformed microbial consortia adhere as buds of growth, governing biofilm initiation. These findings provide new insights into spatial and population heterogeneity development in complex ecosystems.

Summary: Microbial aggregates with diverse structures and compositions, including bacteria associated with host cells, are found in human saliva. These aggregates rapidly proliferate and expand during colonization and biofilm initiation, while most single cells remain static or are incorporated by growing aggregates. This alternative biofilm development process involves aggregates adhering to surfaces as growth nuclei and shaping polymicrobial communities at different scales.

Summary: Dental plaque, a complex microbial biofilm community, is a major cause of oral infections and infectious endocarditis. Sortase enzyme, responsible for cellular attachment and inter-bacterial interactions, is a potential drug target to control biofilm formation. The crystal structure of the SsaSrtC sortase, responsible for primary colonizing bacterium attachment, has been determined, and its substrate-binding residues essential for pilin recognition and pilus assembly have been identified. Rutin and α-crocin have been identified as potential inhibitors of SsaSrtC.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of probiotics on biofilm acidogenicity and the number of salivary Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli in orthodontic patients. It found that the probiotics could reduce plaque pH after three weeks, but had no significant impact on the number of bacteria in saliva and dental biofilm.

Summary: The study found that exposure to starch and sucrose (isolated or combined) led to a decrease in CA VI activity in children with early childhood caries in saliva. However, the combination of starch and sucrose did not modify CA VI activity in the biofilm of ECC children.

Summary: This systematic review focuses on decontamination methods of microbial biofilm on titanium implant surfaces used in dentistry. The review summarized 17 different groups of decontamination methods from 116 studies, with most methods proven effective in preventing biofilm formation and decontaminating established biofilm on dental implants.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the differences of mycobiome in diverse spatial niches with and without S-ECC. The results showed significant differences in fungal communities in different spatial niches of primary teeth of S-ECC children, with C. albicans richness closely related to caries pathogenicity.

Summary: This clinical study compared a prototype of a new double-sided thermoplastic polyurethane-based toothbrush with a conventional nylon-bristle toothbrush and found no significant differences in dental biofilm removal and bacterial contamination between the two. The participants reported satisfactory effectiveness and efficiency of the new toothbrush in cleaning their teeth.

Summary: The research aimed to design an advanced analytical tool for precise characterization of microbial aggregates in biofilms formed on food-processing surfaces, using imaging flow cytometry and a machine learning-based approach. Significant differences in microbial aggregate complexity were observed at different diagnostic points, with active microbial cells dominating in bacterial aggregates in certain cases, such as a mushroom crate. The study demonstrated the potential of the developed methodology in detecting invasive biofilm forms in the food industry environment.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of nanobubble aeration on microbial aggregates, specifically activated sludge and biofilm, and found that it improved total nitrogen removal and enhanced the structure of microbial aggregates. The application of nanobubble also shifted the composition of functional substances in microbial aggregates and changed the morphology of biofilm. Additionally, it optimized the distribution of functional microorganisms and their metabolism pathways.
