Summary: The study aimed to enhance the anti-caries performance of pit and fissure sealants by synthesizing silver nanocomposites and evaluating their properties. The synthesized eggshell/Ag material showed strong antibacterial activity and when combined with sealants, exhibited excellent antibacterial properties without affecting mechanical properties. Furthermore, in vivo testing showed no abnormalities, indicating the potential clinical application of eggshell/Ag in dentistry.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the release of BPA from sealants under different pH conditions. The results showed that low pH had a negative effect on the release of BPA. Therefore, frequent exposure to low pH after sealant treatment may negatively affect the chemical stability of the sealant.

Summary: Pit and fissure sealants are effective in preventing caries in permanent teeth, but their effectiveness in primary teeth is still uncertain. The evidence from this review is limited and of low certainty, highlighting the need for further robust randomized controlled trials to address the gap in knowledge regarding the preventive effect and retention of sealants in primary dentition.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of a national pit and fissure sealants (PFS) program in Taiwan. The results showed that children who participated in the program had a reduced risk of caries-related treatments by at least 10%. The presence of retained sealants also contributed to an additional 30% risk reduction.

Summary: This study evaluated the antibacterial, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of pit and fissure sealants containing different weight percentages of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs). The addition of ZnO NPs showed antibacterial activity against S. mutans with no negative effects on the physicochemical and mechanical properties. These sealants can be considered as ideal materials for secondary caries prevention.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to review the impact of nanofillers on the physicomechanical properties of resin-based pit and fissure sealants (RBS). A systematic review was conducted on in vitro studies using nanofilled RBS until February 2023. Different types of nanomaterials were used to reinforce the RBS, and their success as fillers was determined by factors such as nature, morphology, concentration, and volume used. Non-agglomerated and well-dispersed nanofillers enhanced the physicomechanical properties of RBS.

Summary: This study proposes a new strategy for sealing pits and fissures using amyloid-mediated biomimetic remineralization, which can effectively prevent caries. It is shown that delivering a nanofilm into the deepest zone of the fossae and inducing the formation of remineralized enamel inside can achieve a structure and mechanical stability similar to natural enamel, along with good biocompatibility and antibacterial properties.

Summary: This study evaluated the shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of resin-based fissure sealant on saliva-contaminated etched enamel after rinsing, re-etching, and applying universal adhesive. The results showed that re-etching or applying universal adhesive can achieve satisfactory results on saliva-contaminated etched enamel before sealant application.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of sealants in preventing pit and fissure caries in primary molars, but found that there was no significant difference in caries increments between sealed and unsealed molars. Factors such as gender, caries risk level, and oral hygiene score were shown to have an impact on caries development in primary molars. Additionally, the study concluded that over half of the sealants were lost after 2 years, potentially contributing to the low effectiveness of sealants.

Summary: People with disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to visit the dentist for planned care, which can lead to more dental problems and reliance on expensive urgent dental care. The RETURN intervention aims to address these issues by delivering a brief intervention in urgent dental care settings. Dental nurses are trained to have supportive conversations and assist patients in setting goals and action plans. A randomized controlled trial will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the intervention.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of organisational characteristics on the implementation of evidence-based guidance in primary care dental practices. The study identified leadership, communication, and context as key factors that influence the uptake of guidance. The implementation of evidence-based dental recommendations varied, with leadership and practice context being central to poor uptake. It is important for guidelines to tailor recommendations and strategies to reflect the complexities and varying contexts in primary care dentistry, thereby facilitating the implementation of evidence-based guidance.

Summary: The purpose of this article is to examine the impact of cultural influences after World War II on the oral health status of early baby boomers. Data analysis shows higher levels of tooth loss, unrestored caries, and periodontitis among certain racial and ethnic groups, as well as the poor. Smokers also have higher rates of periodontitis. It is concluded that a life course approach to oral health care is necessary to prevent unnecessary and invasive procedures.

Summary: This study investigated the association between demographic and socio-economic characteristics and self-reported oral health (SROH) among older adults. The results showed that over a quarter of the participants reported unfavorable SROH and there was little change in oral health during the studied period. Socio-demographic factors significantly influenced the oral health of older adults, suggesting the need for policies and programs to reduce social inequalities and improve the oral health of disadvantaged older adults.
