Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells are present as biofilms in the paranasal sinuses and the lungs of chronically infected cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Since different inflammatory responses and selective antibiotic pressures are acting in the sinuses compared with the lungs, we compared the adaptive profiles of mucoid and non-mucoid isolates from the two locations. Methods: We studied the genetic basis of phenotypic diversification and gene expression profiles in sequential lung and sinus P. aeruginosa isolates from four chronically infected CF patients, including pre- and post-lung transplantation isolates. Results: The same phenotypes caused by similar mutations and similar gene expression profiles were found in mucoid and non-mucoid isolates from the paranasal sinuses and from the lungs before and after transplantation. Conclusion: Bilateral exchange of P. aeruginosa isolates between the paranasal sinuses and the lungs occurs in chronically infected patients and extensive sinus surgery before the lung transplantation might prevent infection of the new lung. Prognostic Value of Lymph Node Yield, Lymph Node Density, and pN in Oral Cancer

Helene Stampe, Kathrine Kronberg Jakobsen, Jesper Filtenborg Tvedskov, Irene Wessel, Katalin Kiss, Jeppe Friborg, Amanda Oester Andersen, Christian Gronhoj, Christian von Buchwald, Anders Christensen

Summary: This study aims to investigate the thresholds for lymph node yield, lymph node density, and pN in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and their relation to survival outcomes. The results suggest that increased nodal yield, decreased LND, and decreasing number of pN are associated with significantly improved survival outcomes.

Summary: This study aims to establish an international chronic rhinosinusitis outcome registry based on real-world data collection enabled by mobile health technology. A collaborative scientific network of 17 university ear-nose-throat clinics from 10 European countries has been established to collect data in a longitudinal and standardized manner. Up to 300 patients have already been included.

The Prevalence of HPV in Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Seyed Keybud Katirachi, Mathias Peter Gronlund, Kathrine Kronberg Jakobsen, Christian Gronhoj, Christian von Buchwald

Summary: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas (OCSCC). A meta-analysis of 31 studies including 5007 patients revealed an overall HPV+ OCSCC prevalence of 6% (95% CI; 3-10%). The results suggest that HPV may not be a necessary or strong risk factor in OCSCC oncogenesis.

Summary: This study investigated the prognostic impact of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) on overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). The results showed that an increasing NLR was associated with a worse outcome in terms of both OS and RFS, independently of HPV status.

The Incidence, Survival, and HPV Impact of Second Primary Cancer following Primary Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A 20-Year Retrospective and Population-Based Study

Lasse Andersen, Kathrine Kronberg Jakobsen, Amanda-Louise Fenger Carlander, Martin Garset-Zamani, Jeppe Friborg, Katalin Kiss, Rasmus L. Marvig, Caroline Olsen, Finn Cilius Nielsen, Elo Andersen, Christian Gronhoj, Christian von Buchwald

Summary: This study examined the risk of second primary cancer (SPC) following oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) on survival following SPC. The risk of SPC was approximately five times higher than the general population, and HPV-positive (HPV+) patients had a longer time to SPC and better survival compared to HPV-negative (HPV-) patients. SPC was most frequently found in the lungs, head, and neck (LHN) for HPV- OPSCC patients and lungs followed by gender-specific sites for HPV+ OPSCC.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether near-infrared autofluorescence image guidance can reduce the incidence of hypoparathyroidism in total thyroidectomy. The results showed that near-infrared autofluorescence imaging can improve the detection rate of parathyroid glands and reduce the rate of hypoparathyroidism, but the difference was not statistically significant. Further studies are needed to confirm the use of near-infrared autofluorescence imaging as an auxiliary tool for parathyroid gland identification.

Diagnostic accuracy of combined optical- and radio-guided SNB for neck staging of oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions in the anterior oral cavity

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic performance of bimodal optical and radio-guided sentinel node biopsy (SNB) for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) sub-sites in the anterior oral cavity. A total of 50 cN0 OSCC patients scheduled for SNB were prospectively studied and injected with the tracer complex Tc99m:ICG:Nacocoll. Optical imaging appeared to be an effective tool for real-time SN identification unaffected by possible interference from the injection.

Summary: There is currently no approved tumor-specific imaging agents for head and neck cancer. This study explored the expression of nine imaging targets in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients to identify potential molecular imaging targets. The urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR), integrin alpha v beta 6, and tissue factor showed high expression rates and are promising imaging targets for OSCC primary tumors, lymph node metastases, and recurrences.
