Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the level of serum elafin in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and its relationship with disease activity. The results showed that serum elafin levels were significantly elevated in children with IBD, especially during active phases. ROC analysis suggested that serum elafin could be a potential biomarker for ulcerative colitis.

Summary: The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) is rising globally, leading to a higher risk of infections in children with dysfunctional immune systems. Vaccines are essential for preventing these infections, and should be administered according to specific immunization guidelines for IBD patients. Compliance with vaccination recommendations is generally low, highlighting the need for multidisciplinary educational programs to improve vaccination coverage and protect children with IBD from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Summary: Crohn's disease (CD) is more dysbiotic than ulcerative colitis (UC), while CD relapse is associated with alterations at the species and metabolic pathway levels, providing biomarkers to discriminate IBD subtypes and predict disease activity. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering relapse-related microbial dysbiosis in IBD patients for better management and treatment strategies.

Summary: Despite being an important issue for patients, the impact of diet on adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is not well explored, with limited guidance. Current evidence on various diets used in the treatment of IBD is summarized, with potential applications of dietary data from related immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) to inform providers. Multiple diets, including Mediterranean, vegetarian/vegan, and reduced-calorie/fasting diets, have shown positive results in other inflammatory diseases, suggesting potential applicability to IBD, but further well-designed clinical trials are needed for guidance.

Summary: The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of sleep disturbance in pediatric IBD patients and evaluate the relationship between clinical features of IBD, disease activity, inflammatory markers and quality of sleep. The results showed that the PSQI score was significantly higher in the patient group than the control group, and there was a strong correlation between disease activity and sleep quality. The Pediatric Crohn's Disease Activity Index and Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index were strong predictors of sleep disorders in pediatric patients with IBD.

Summary: This study investigated the quality of life in children and adolescents aged 7-18 years with inflammatory bowel disease in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia, and identified factors that influence it. The study found that inflammatory bowel disease has a significant impact on the emotional functioning of children, and corticosteroid utilization is associated with poorer quality of life.

Summary: The study found a significant association between IBD and CMV colitis, with a higher occurrence rate in patients with UC. Patients with CD and CMV colitis had increased odds of mortality, shock, and ICU stay, while patients with UC had a higher likelihood of undergoing colectomy. Patients with IBD and CMV colitis also experienced higher odds of acute kidney injury, multiorgan failure, increased hospital costs, and longer hospital stays compared to those without CMV colitis. Prospectively designed studies are needed to further investigate the risk factors and impact of CMV colitis on IBD patients.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases show gender bias, with female-specific differences influencing disease presentation and activity. Female genetic predisposition related to the X chromosome and hormonal fluctuations can affect gastrointestinal symptoms, pain perception, and pregnancy outcomes. Female patients with inflammatory bowel disease experience poorer quality of life, higher psychological distress, and reduced sexual activity compared to males. This narrative review aims to summarize the current knowledge of female-related features in clinical manifestations, development, therapy, and implications for sexual and psychological well-being. The goal is to provide gastroenterologists with guidance on female-specific differences to improve patient diagnosis, management, and treatment.

Summary: The composition and diversity of saliva microbiota are not successful predictors for pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). However, the relative abundances of certain bacteria are altered before the onset of T1D, and the metabolic pathway PWY-5677 is predicted to be lowered. Investigating functional pathways might provide a better approach in searching for biomarkers for autoimmune disease in the future.

Summary: The study found that patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) exhibited an increased number of periodic limb movements during sleep compared to healthy controls. It also revealed significant associations between striatal dopamine transporter uptake and sleep architecture, indicating that dopamine deficiency in the caudate nucleus may affect sleep quality.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the rate of transient acute hydrocephalus in patients with aSAH treated endovascularly and evaluate its predictive factors. A new risk score, DOTAHAS score, was constructed to differentiate patients with TAH from those needing surgical interventions. The study identified older age, poor initial clinical condition, aSAH from posterior circulation, and extent of hemorrhage as independent risk factors for acute hydrocephalus. Patients with higher DOTAHAS scores had a significantly higher risk for external ventricular drainage placement. Further evaluation of the score is needed.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the inhibition of the specific isoform of Bone Morphogenetic Protein 1 (BMP1.3) by a monoclonal antibody can reduce cardiac fibrosis and provide cardioprotection through inhibiting the Transforming Growth Factor beta pathway and inducing BMP5. It suggests the therapeutic potential of anti-BMP1.3 antibodies in preventing cardiomyocyte apoptosis, reducing collagen deposition, and preserving cardiac function after ischemia.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the frequency and factors affecting the use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and dietary supplements among pediatric cancer patients in Croatia. Results showed that half of the participants used CAM, and more than two-thirds used dietary supplements. Herbal medicine, vitamins, and minerals were among the most commonly used items. It is important to raise awareness about the use of CAM and dietary supplements in pediatric oncology patients to predict and mitigate side effects.
