Summary: A micro-expression is a subtle, local and brief facial movement that can reveal concealed genuine emotions. Despite the challenges posed by the short duration and low intensity of micro-expressions, research on micro-expression recognition has attracted attention due to its promising applications. This study proposes a deep local-holistic network approach for micro-expression recognition, combining hierarchical convolutional recurrent neural network (HCRNN) and robust principal-component-analysis-based recurrent neural network (RPRNN) to extract both local and global features. Experimental results demonstrate the reasonably good performance of the proposed method.

Summary: The purpose of this study is to determine the key institutions and variables in a multidimensional data set using hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis, in order to visualize the relationships between industry, academia, and government. The analysis of data from eight Brazilian universities revealed four main university clusters, which was consistent with the results of principal component analysis. The financing, presence of innovation environments, and regional context explained these clusters.

Summary: Dimension reduction techniques like PCA, PLS, and CCA are extensively used in the analysis of high-dimensional omics data. Integrative analysis, which outperforms meta-analysis and individual-data analysis, has been developed for multiple datasets with compatible designs. We developed the R package iSFun to facilitate integrative dimension reduction analysis, offering comprehensive analysis options under different models and penalties.

Summary: The article introduces a method for facial expression recognition using Dynamic Local Ternary Pattern (DLTP) descriptor, in which facial images are processed and features are extracted through a series of steps, and then classified using multi-class Kernel Extreme Learning Machine. Experimental results validate the superior performance of the method across multiple datasets, achieving high recognition accuracy.

Summary: BIC is an electrophysiological signature of binaural processing in the auditory brainstem, easily measurable in small rodents but less reliably measured in humans. Further measurements across species could help understand its origin and variation in measurability.

Summary: Humans, like nonhuman terrestrial mammals, use smell to determine friend or foe. This study found that friends have more similar body odor and that more similar smells can predict positive social interactions. These results suggest the presence of chemistry in social chemistry.

Summary: Electronic tongues are sensors inspired by biological recognition systems, used to determine flavors or substances in samples. The sensor arrays are generally non-specific, requiring data processing techniques for specific information. Principal curves can be a promising technique for analyzing electronic tongues data.

Summary: A novel robust kernel principal component analysis method with optimal mean (RKPCA-OM) is proposed to enhance the robustness of KPCA by automatically eliminating the optimal mean. The theoretical proof guarantees the convergence of the algorithm and the obtained optimal subspaces and means. Exhaustive experimental results validate the superiority of the proposed method.

Summary: This article presents an algorithm for facial expression recognition using deep Siamese Neural Networks (SNNs) that maintain the local structure of images in the embedding similarity space. The network is designed to reveal the similarity of input pairs by comparing features through a designed metric. A new image pairing strategy is developed to train the Siamese model. The algorithm achieves better results compared to other deep learning-based approaches when evaluated using AffectNet, FER2013, and Compound Facial Expressions of Emotion (CFEE) datasets.

Summary: The study found that human observers were able to quickly learn cross-species expressions, indicating that face dynamics are largely represented independently of facial shape. This result supports the co-evolution of visual processing and motor control of facial expressions, while challenging appearance-based neural network theories of dynamic expression recognition.

Summary: Over the past 50 years, there has been a strong interest in using eye-tracking techniques to study human and nonhuman primate psychological processes. While early attempts at nonhuman primate eye tracking were relatively crude, advancements in technology now allow for noninvasive techniques to be used with nonhuman primates. Despite the growing interest in eye-tracking research, there is still little consensus on best practices.
