Summary: This study examined the trends in rotavirus and norovirus-associated gastroenteritis in South Korea since the introduction of the rotavirus vaccine in 2007. It found a decreasing trend in rotavirus-related cases, but an increasing trend in norovirus-related cases, indicating different impacts of the two viruses on CwG.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics and prognosis of children with norovirus-associated benign convulsions with mild gastroenteritis. It found that most patients only had vomiting as a symptom, had seizures that lasted for less than 5 minutes, and had a good prognosis without the need for long-term use of anticonvulsants.

Summary: This study reported a novel de novo variant of SCN8A in a child with CwG, providing evidence for the genetic etiology of CwG and expanding the phenotypic and genetic spectrum of SCN8A-related disorders.

Summary: The objective of this study was to determine the antiviral potential of additional natural extracts, honeys, and propolis samples against norovirus. The results showed that date syrup and one propolis sample showed promising blocking potential, while several honey samples had weaker blocking potential.

Summary: Human noroviruses are the most common viral cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, but there are currently no approved vaccines or specific therapeutics. Obstacles delaying the development of a norovirus vaccine include the extreme diversity of noroviruses, incomplete understanding of immunity, and lack of robust cell culture systems or animal models. Recent advances in cultivation, genomics, and immunity have provided new information for better understanding of norovirus immunity and guiding the development of cross-protective vaccines.

Summary: HuNoV is the leading cause of AGE worldwide, but the development of its vaccine faces challenges due to the lack of a robust in vitro cultivation system. Although HuNoV vaccine candidates based on VLPs are being tested in clinical trials, overcoming challenges to achieve broad protection remains unresolved.

Summary: Developing a broadly effective norovirus vaccine is challenging due to the genetic and antigenic diversity of noroviruses, as well as the lack of robust cell culture systems and reliable immune markers for vaccine evaluation. Current vaccine candidates, focusing on recombinant VP1-based virus-like particles, have shown safety, immunogenicity, and protective efficacy, indicating a high likelihood of successful norovirus vaccine development.

Summary: Norovirus is a common cause of pediatric acute gastroenteritis worldwide, but there are currently no available vaccines. A case-control study conducted in Nicaragua found that risk factors for norovirus gastroenteritis included having a dirt floor in the home and recent contact with someone with AGE symptoms.

Summary: This study compared the characteristics of GII.2 and GII.4 norovirus outbreaks reported in closed or semi-closed institutions in Catalonia in 2017 and 2018. It was found that GII.2 outbreaks were more common in schools or summer camps, while GII.4 outbreaks were more common in nursing homes. GII.2 outbreaks had more symptomatic cases and symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, and headache were observed more frequently.

Summary: In this study, a systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to examine the clinical features and outcomes of paediatric patients with neurological complications associated with rotavirus infection. The results showed that patients from Asia accounted for the highest number, and those who developed benign convulsions with mild gastroenteritis (CwG) were younger in age. Status epilepticus was observed in 23% and 5% of patients with encephalitis and CwG, respectively. The encephalo-cerebellitis group had the most severe long-term outcome, while all cases of CwG fully recovered.

Summary: This study examined the epidemiological characteristics of norovirus outbreaks in China from 2000 to 2018. The findings showed an increasing trend in norovirus outbreaks, with schools and kindergartens as the most common outbreak sites. Person-to-person transmission was the main mode of transmission, and GII was the predominant norovirus genogroup. The number of outbreaks was positively associated with the per capita gross domestic product and the year-end resident population. These findings highlight the importance of norovirus surveillance and genotyping in China.

Summary: The seasonality of viral gastroenteritis is related to weather conditions, particularly absolute humidity. This study found that low absolute humidity was associated with increased detection rates of several gastroenteritis viruses, including norovirus. The decline in absolute humidity preceded the increase in norovirus detection, and absolute humidity was a better predictor of gastrointestinal virus seasonality compared to relative humidity.

Summary: This study observed a reduction in antibiotic prescriptions for acute otitis media and streptococcal pharyngitis in children in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy after implementing the ProBA project guidelines. The rates of complications such as acute mastoiditis and acute rheumatic fever did not increase as a result. Administrative databases were found to be useful for monitoring projects and ensuring healthcare professionals adherence to guidelines.
