Achievement of glycemic control and antidepressant medication use in comorbid depression and type 2 diabetes

Summary: This study investigated the association between acute phase antidepressant medication treatment and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. The results showed that acute phase treatment was significantly associated with achieving glycemic control within 36 months, but not beyond 36 months. There was no association between acute vs. less than acute phase treatment and glycemic control.

Fully automated closed-loop insulin delivery in adults with type 2 diabetes: an open-label, single-center, randomized crossover trial

Summary: The benefits of fully closed-loop insulin delivery in adults with type 2 diabetes are unclear. A study compared the use of closed-loop therapy with standard insulin therapy and found that closed-loop therapy improved glucose control and reduced mean glucose levels. This suggests that fully closed-loop insulin delivery may be a safe and effective method for improving outcomes in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of tofogliflozin and glimepiride in patients with type 2 diabetes and NAFLD. The results showed that tofogliflozin significantly improved liver histology and metabolism, with no significant difference compared to glimepiride. Hepatic gene expression profiling also revealed the reversal of histology-associated markers with tofogliflozin. Further large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings.

Determinants of poor glycemic control among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia: Unmatched case-control study

Summary: This study aims to identify determinants of poor glycemic control among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients at a diabetes mellitus clinic in University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. A hospital-based case-control study was conducted, and a total of 90 cases and 90 controls with type 2 diabetes were recruited. The results showed that age less than 65 years, inadequate physical exercise, presence of comorbidities, non-adherence to anti-diabetes medications, persistent proteinuria, and high-density lipoprotein less than 40 mg/dl were the determinants of poor glycemic control. Therefore, targeted educational and behavioral modification programs should be practiced to improve glycemic control.

Influence of Diabetes Duration and Glycemic Control on Dementia: A Cohort Study

Summary: This study investigated the influence of diabetes duration and glycemic control on the risk of incident dementia. The findings showed that individuals with diabetes have a higher risk of dementia compared to those with normal glucose levels, and this risk increases with longer duration of diabetes. Additionally, it was found that both longer diabetes duration and poor glycemic control were associated with the highest risk of dementia, highlighting the importance of considering both factors in dementia risk assessments for diabetic patients.

Influence of glycemic control and hypoglycemia on the risk of fracture in patients with diabetes mellitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies

Summary: Both increased HbA1c levels and hypoglycemia may increase the risk of fracture in patients with DM. The positive association between HbA1c levels and the risk of fracture appears to be, in part, explained by hypoglycemia-induced falls, possibly due to insulin use.

Summary: The cumulative incidence of patients retransitioning from TNF-alpha inhibitor biosimilar to originator was estimated at 7.6%. Factors associated with retransitioning included patient disease diagnosis, disease stability, and treatment strategy implementation. Studies indicated that focusing on patients with stable disease and not providing the option for retransitioning at the introduction of biosimilars may reduce the risk of retransitioning.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the frequency and acceptance of CDSS-generated STOPP/START signals in hospitalized older patients with polypharmacy and multimorbidity. Results showed that 99% of patients had at least one signal generated, with an overall acceptance rate of 39%. Acceptance varied greatly among different signals, ranging from 2.5% to 75.8%. Various patient-related and setting-related factors influenced the acceptance of these signals.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic risk factors for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. It revealed that the GG genotype of TRPV1 gene (rs879207) is associated with an increased risk of severe neuropathy. Additionally, concomitant use of paclitaxel and GG genotype also showed a significant association with severe CIPN.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between the magnitude of busulfan exposure and the occurrence of hepatic veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (VOD/SOS) in children and young adults undergoing myeloablative conditioning with a busulfan-containing regimen before allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). The study found that higher cumulative busulfan exposure increased the risk of VOD/SOS in patients receiving only busulfan as one alkylator, while the magnitude of busulfan exposure did not further increase this risk in patients receiving multiple alkylators.
