P>Objective The purpose of the present study was to describe the severity and pattern of peri-implantitis-associated bone loss. Material and Methods Intra-oral radiographs from 182 subjects were analysed. Bone-level measurements were performed in 419 implants with a history of bone loss. All radiographs obtained in the interval from the 1-year follow-up to the end-point examination (5-23 years) were analysed. The amount of bone loss that occurred from 1 year after prosthesis insertion was assessed and the pattern of bone loss was evaluated. Results The average bone loss after the first year of function was 1.68 mm and 32% of the implants demonstrated bone loss >= 2 mm. The multilevel model revealed that the bone loss showed a non-linear pattern and that the rate of bone loss increased over time. The model also revealed that the pattern of peri-implantitis associated bone loss was similar within the same subject. Conclusion It is suggested that peri-implantitis-associated bone loss varies between subjects and is, in most cases, characterized by a non-linear progression, with the rate of loss increasing over time.

Efficacy of rehabilitation of stage IV periodontitis patients with full-arch fixed prostheses: Tooth-supported versus Implant-supported-A systematic review

Cristiano Tomasi, Jean-Pierre Albouy, Dennis Schaller, Renata Camino Navarro, Jan Derks

Summary: The efficacy of implant-supported compared to tooth-supported full-arch prostheses was evaluated in patients with stage IV periodontitis. Observational studies showed that the 10-year estimates of tooth loss were lower than for implants, while the estimated loss of tooth- and implant-supported restorations at 10 years was similar. Additionally, technical complications were more prevalent in implant-supported compared to tooth-supported restorations.

Prevention and management of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis: A systematic review of outcome measures used in clinical studies in the last 10 years

Jan Derks, Yuki Ichioka, Carlotta Dionigi, Anna Trullenque-Eriksson, Jessica Berglundh, Cristiano Tomasi, Filippo Graziani

Summary: This study evaluated outcome measures, assessment methods, and analysis in clinical studies on the prevention and management of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The results showed that probing pocket depth (PPD) and bleeding/suppuration on probing (BOP) were commonly reported measures, while composite outcomes, adverse events, and patient-reported outcomes were less frequently described.

Efficacy of access flap and pocket elimination procedures in the management of peri-implantitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Karolina Karlsson, Anna Trullenque-Eriksson, Cristiano Tomasi, Jan Derks

Summary: Access flap and pocket elimination surgery are effective procedures in the management of peri-implantitis, as they can reduce probing depth and bleeding. However, treatment outcomes are influenced by baseline conditions and the recurrence rate of the disease is high within 5 years.

Influence of soft tissue thickness on marginal bone level around dental implants: A systematic review with meta-analysis and trial-sequential analysis

Summary: The objective of this review and meta-analysis was to assess the impact of soft tissue thickness on initial bone remodeling after implant installation. A literature search was conducted, and 6 studies were included in the final analysis. The results showed that soft tissue thickness seemed to influence marginal bone loss after a short follow-up period. Further studies are needed to evaluate the influence of soft tissue thickness on marginal bone loss.

Effects of poverty on mental health in the UK working-age population: causal analyses of the UK Household Longitudinal Study

Rachel M. Thomson, Daniel Kopasker, Alastair Leyland, Anna Pearce, S. Vittal Katikireddi

Summary: This study estimated the effect of poverty on mental health using causal epidemiology. The results showed a significant absolute effect of poverty on the prevalence of common mental disorders in the UK working-age population, with larger effects observed in women. The population attributable fraction for moving into poverty was 6.34%, indicating that poverty contributes to a significant burden of mental health in this population.

Furcation involvement and tooth loss: A registry-based retrospective cohort study

Summary: This registry-based retrospective cohort study found that furcation status has a significant impact on the risk for molar loss. Molars with furcation involvement of degree 2 and 3 have higher risk compared to those without furcation involvement. Additionally, endodontic status and probing depth are also relevant risk factors for molar loss.

Mental health and loneliness in Scottish schools: A multilevel analysis of data from the health behaviour in school-aged children study

Summary: Based on social-ecological theory, this study found that loneliness is associated with mental health, and this association varies in school settings. Loneliness, as well as demographic, social, and school factors, was found to be related to mental health. Furthermore, the negative impact of loneliness on mental health was stronger in schools with lower average mental health scores.

Co-occurring homelessness, justice involvement, opioid dependence and psychosis: a cross-sectoral data linkage study

Summary: This study used administrative data to conduct a unique population study of residents in Glasgow, Scotland, and found that experiences of social disadvantage are common. The study revealed that homelessness, justice involvement, opioid dependence, and psychosis are common forms of disadvantage, with the highest impact on men and residents in deprived areas. The study suggests that the methods used to analyze this data offer opportunities to evaluate the impact of policy and service changes on health.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of treatment outcomes following surgical therapy of peri-implantitis. Baseline probing pocket depth (PPD) was found to be the most relevant predictor, showing positive associations with final PPD, soft-tissue recession (REC), and marginal bone level (MBL) gain, and negative association with probability of pocket closure. Smokers had higher residual PPD. Absence of keratinized mucosa at baseline increased the probability of bleeding on probing (BOP). Plaque at 6 weeks was detrimental in terms of residual PPD and BOP. Treatment allocation had an effect on REC. Final BOP was explained by residual PPD & GE;6 mm and plaque at more than two sites.
