Summary: This study evaluated radiographic bone level (RxBL) at dental implants in Spain, finding significant associations between RxBL and clinical output variables as well as potential predictor variables such as smoking habits, implant diameter, years of follow-up, and type of prosthesis. Peri-implant RxBL ranged from 0 to 13.17 mm, demonstrating its importance in implant success and maintenance.

Summary: Dental implants are considered a reliable routine procedure for replacing missing teeth, but the presence of peri-implantitis has become a concern due to its negative impact on patients' quality of life. The surgical therapeutic modalities for managing this disorder include indications, contraindications, complexity, predictability, and effectiveness.

Summary: This retrospective study investigated the association between the amount of initial physiological bone remodeling (IPBR) during the first year of implant placement and the incidence of peri-implantitis as well as the pattern of progressive bone loss. The results showed no significant association between IPBR and peri-implantitis, but splinted implants had a higher marginal bone loss rate compared to non-splinted implants from T1 to T2.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis in mice and evaluate the efficacy of Resolvin D2 as a treatment modality. The results revealed that dental implants are susceptible to infection and associated with bone loss, but treatment with RvD2 can prevent the disease.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term marginal bone level (MBL) of implants supporting fixed full-arch restoration in patients who had previously lost their dentition due to severe periodontitis. The results showed that dental implants restored with fixed segmented full-arch rehabilitation in patients with a history of severe periodontal disease do not suffer important marginal bone loss if some specific factors are considered, mainly the use of long transmucosal abutments (>= 2 mm).

Summary: In recent decades, there have been significant advances in ortho-aesthetic-functional rehabilitation with the introduction of implantology. However, there is still a percentage of failures in implantology surgeries, mainly due to infections caused by bacterial proliferation, fungi presence, and biofilm formation, leading to peri-implantitis. Various studies have been conducted to explore the interaction between the host-oral microbiome and the development of peri-implantitis. Peri-implantitis is associated with a diversity of bacterial species, with Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia being identified in higher proportions of peri-implantitis samples. In addition, the injury of peri-implant tissue triggers an inflammatory response mediated by the activation of innate immune cells, such as macrophages, dendritic cells, mast cells, and neutrophils. Activation of the host immune system may disrupt the balance of oral microbiota, leading to dysbiosis and the production of various substances that contribute to implant loss.

Summary: The restorative design factors like restoration emergence angle and maintenance visit frequency significantly influenced the early progression of peri-implantitis. 66.3% of implants exhibited marginal bone loss within 1mm of the apical end of the internal screw, indicating a common location for peri-implant bone loss.

Summary: Dental implants are commonly used to replace lost teeth, and titanium implants have a high success rate. However, there is an increasing risk of peri-implantitis, an inflammatory disease that affects the tissues around the implant. This review highlights the impact of different metabolic conditions on peri-implantitis and emphasizes the importance of considering both local and systemic factors in dental implant procedures and treatment.

Summary: The aim of this systematic review is to summarize current knowledge on the use of biomarkers extracted from peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) as predictors of peri-implant bone loss (BL). A total of 158 entries were initially found, and after a full-text review and assessment of eligibility criteria, nine articles were selected. According to the review, several inflammatory biomarkers harvested from PICF seem to be correlated with peri-implant bone loss and may aid in diagnosing peri-implantitis early. MiRNA expression has shown predictive potential for peri-implant bone loss and may be useful for preventive and therapeutic purposes in implant dentistry.

Summary: Preserving marginal bone level is crucial for the success of dental implant therapy. This study found that platform-switching (PS) dental implants showed less reduction in marginal bone level compared to platform-matching (PM) dental implants, and had a positive impact on vertical and horizontal bone defects.

Summary: This study found higher gene expression levels of the transcription factors ROR gamma T and FOXP3 in tissues affected by peri-implantitis compared to healthy tissues, indicating a possible hybrid TH17-Treg profile. Further research is needed to better understand the immunological mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of peri-implantitis.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of clinical and radiographic evaluations made at a single time point during follow-up. The bone levels observed at 9 years were highly accurate in identifying pronounced bone loss. In the absence of baseline documentation, a secondary case definition based on clinical findings provided the best overall diagnostic accuracy in identifying peri-implantitis cases.

Summary: This study aimed to review the levels of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenesis-related factors in peri-implant diseases. The results showed that the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and RANKL/OPG were not balanced in peri-implant diseases, suggesting their involvement in the host response related to peri-implantitis.

Summary: The efficacy of implant-supported compared to tooth-supported full-arch prostheses was evaluated in patients with stage IV periodontitis. Observational studies showed that the 10-year estimates of tooth loss were lower than for implants, while the estimated loss of tooth- and implant-supported restorations at 10 years was similar. Additionally, technical complications were more prevalent in implant-supported compared to tooth-supported restorations.

Summary: The objective of this review and meta-analysis was to assess the impact of soft tissue thickness on initial bone remodeling after implant installation. A literature search was conducted, and 6 studies were included in the final analysis. The results showed that soft tissue thickness seemed to influence marginal bone loss after a short follow-up period. Further studies are needed to evaluate the influence of soft tissue thickness on marginal bone loss.

Summary: This study estimated the effect of poverty on mental health using causal epidemiology. The results showed a significant absolute effect of poverty on the prevalence of common mental disorders in the UK working-age population, with larger effects observed in women. The population attributable fraction for moving into poverty was 6.34%, indicating that poverty contributes to a significant burden of mental health in this population.

Summary: This registry-based retrospective cohort study found that furcation status has a significant impact on the risk for molar loss. Molars with furcation involvement of degree 2 and 3 have higher risk compared to those without furcation involvement. Additionally, endodontic status and probing depth are also relevant risk factors for molar loss.

Summary: Based on social-ecological theory, this study found that loneliness is associated with mental health, and this association varies in school settings. Loneliness, as well as demographic, social, and school factors, was found to be related to mental health. Furthermore, the negative impact of loneliness on mental health was stronger in schools with lower average mental health scores.

Summary: This study used administrative data to conduct a unique population study of residents in Glasgow, Scotland, and found that experiences of social disadvantage are common. The study revealed that homelessness, justice involvement, opioid dependence, and psychosis are common forms of disadvantage, with the highest impact on men and residents in deprived areas. The study suggests that the methods used to analyze this data offer opportunities to evaluate the impact of policy and service changes on health.

Summary: This study aimed to identify predictors of treatment outcomes following surgical therapy of peri-implantitis. Baseline probing pocket depth (PPD) was found to be the most relevant predictor, showing positive associations with final PPD, soft-tissue recession (REC), and marginal bone level (MBL) gain, and negative association with probability of pocket closure. Smokers had higher residual PPD. Absence of keratinized mucosa at baseline increased the probability of bleeding on probing (BOP). Plaque at 6 weeks was detrimental in terms of residual PPD and BOP. Treatment allocation had an effect on REC. Final BOP was explained by residual PPD & GE;6 mm and plaque at more than two sites.
