Summary: This study investigated whether patients with 1-2 cm appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) need to undergo right-sided hemicolectomy, and found that right-sided hemicolectomy is not necessary after appendectomy for appendiceal NETs. Furthermore, it was found that regional lymph node metastases of appendiceal NETs are clinically irrelevant and additional postoperative exclusion of metastases and histopathological evaluation of risk factors is not supported. These findings should inform the development of treatment guidelines.

Summary: Spontaneous portosystemic shunts are often overlooked as a cause of hepatic encephalopathy associated with cirrhosis. They are considered as radiological biomarkers of clinically significant portal hypertension and have a clinical impact on complications related to portal hypertension. Interventional radiology embolization is a direct method to target these shunts.

Summary: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of cancer death, and the medical treatment options are limited. The multikinase inhibitor sorafenib has been widely used for systemic therapy in advanced HCC. This study shows that sorafenib affects the levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA)-derived epoxygenated metabolites, indicating that specific supplementation with DHA could increase levels of the epoxy compound 19,20-EDP with potential anti-tumor activity in HCC patients receiving sorafenib therapy.

The effect of hypoxia on Daphnia magna performance and its associated microbial and bacterioplankton community: A scope for phenotypic plasticity and microbiome community interactions upon environmental stress?

Summary: The depletion of oxygen due to increased stratification and decreased solubility is a significant chemical change in aquatic ecosystems under global environmental change, leading to increased exposure of aquatic organisms to hypoxic conditions. Understanding the effects of hypoxia on key ecological species and their microbial communities is crucial for predicting the response of aquatic communities to this environmental disturbance. In this study, the (sub-)lethal effects of hypoxia on Daphnia, a keystone species in freshwater ecosystems, were examined, along with the potential role of the microbial community in the phenotypic switch and tolerance to hypoxia. The results showed phenotypic plasticity in Daphnia performance traits, as well as changes in species richness and community composition of the microbial community, suggesting the importance of the microbiome in phenotypic plasticity and hypoxia tolerance in Daphnia.

Transition from laparoscopic to robotic liver surgery: clinical outcomes, learning curve effect, and cost-effectiveness

Summary: This study evaluates the short-term outcomes and cost differences of robotic liver surgery (RLS) compared to laparoscopic liver surgery (LLS). The findings indicate that RLS has comparable short-term outcomes to LLS but with shorter operative time, lower intraoperative blood loss, and shorter hospital stay. The cost analysis also shows that RLS is more cost-effective compared to LLS.
