Summary: Cognitive functioning plays a crucial role in people's lives and quality of life, and chemotherapy for cancer patients may cause long-term cognitive issues. This study focused on the subjective perception of cognitive functioning in long-term lymphoma survivors and its impact on their quality of life. The findings revealed that both subjectively and objectively assessed cognitive measures were negatively correlated with most aspects of quality of life, emphasizing the importance of addressing cognitive functioning in cancer survivors to improve their overall quality of life.

Summary: Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated disease that requires lifelong treatment to control symptoms, as there is no cure available. Research interest is high in the newest biological drugs for treating moderate to severe psoriasis, especially those that block the IL-23/IL-17 axis.

Patients with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Greatly Improved Fatigue Symptoms When Treated with Oxygen-Ozone Autohemotherapy

Umberto Tirelli, Marianno Franzini, Luigi Valdenassi, Sergio Pandolfi, Massimiliano Berretta, Giovanni Ricevuti, Salvatore Chirumbolo

Summary: This study found that ozone treatment can significantly improve fatigue symptoms in ME/CFS patients without any side effects. Almost half of the treated patients showed improvement in fatigue scores from worst to best within 30 days, and the majority of patients experienced significant relief from fatigue.

Clinical Evidence of Interaction between Nutraceutical Supplementation and Platinum-based Chemotherapy

Summary: Platinum agents, including cisplatin, oxaliplatin, and carboplatin, are commonly used chemotherapeutic drugs for solid tumors. However, drug resistance and severe toxicities, such as ototoxicity, neurotoxicity, and nephrotoxicity, limit their effectiveness. Recent studies suggest that supplementing herbal products, vitamins, and minerals with antioxidant properties can help prevent and mitigate these side effects. While complementary and alternative medicine can improve the quality of life for patients undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy, it is important to consider its potential interference with drug metabolism.

Intensity and Prevalence of Psychological Distress in Cancer Inpatients: Cross-Sectional Study Using New Case-Finding Criteria for the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale

Barbara Muzzatti, Giulia Agostinelli, Francesca Bomben, Sara Busato, Cristiana Flaiban, Katiuscia Maria Gipponi, Giulia Mariutti, Sara Mella, Marika Piccinin, Maria Antonietta Annunziata

Summary: This study used the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to assess the intensity and prevalence of psychological distress in cancer inpatients. The results show that anxiety and depression are distinct entities, with anxiety being more intense overall. Certain sociodemographic and clinical factors, such as gender, age, occupational status, and cancer diagnosis, were found to be associated with anxiety and depression intensity or prevalence.

The Multiplicity of Argonaute Complexes in Mammalian Cells

Maurizio Mauro, Massimiliano Berretta, Giuseppe Palermo, Vincenzo Cavalieri, Gaspare La Rocca

Summary: Argonautes (AGOs) are highly conserved proteins involved in gene regulation at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level. They associate with microRNAs to mediate post-transcriptional repression of protein-coding genes. The exact composition of AGO complexes, which form the core of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), has been challenging to determine due to dynamic regulation. This review summarizes studies on AGO complexes in mammalian cells and discusses opportunities for developing novel anti-cancer therapies based on the properties of RISC.

Patient-caregiver relationship in cancer fatigue and distress. A dyadic approach

De Feudis, Giusi Graziano, Nicola Marzano, Antonietta Curci, Antonella Fidanzio, Maria Antonietta Annunziata, Valeria Antinone, Simona Brovelli, Mariagrazia Carone, Luigi Cavanna, Claudia Cormio, Arturo Cuomo, Valentina Di Mattei, Annarita Di Silvestre, Alessandro Lettini, Antonio Petrone, Maria Carmela Scriminaci, Paolo Tralongo, Maria Fara De Caro, Tiziana Lanciano

Summary: It has been shown that the reciprocal relationship between cancer patients and their family caregivers positively affects their distress levels. This study explores the role of relationship reciprocity in the symptoms of fatigue and distress experienced by both the patients and caregivers. It suggests that investigating the caregiving relationship is important for understanding and managing fatigue symptoms in both the patients and caregivers.

Psychosocial Impact of Virtual Cancer Care through Technology: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Caterina Caminiti, Maria Antonietta Annunziata, Paola Di Giulio, Luciano Isa, Paola Mosconi, Maria Giulia Nanni, Michela Piredda, Claudio Verusio, Francesca Diodati, Giuseppe Maglietta, Rodolfo Passalacqua

Summary: This meta-analysis of RCTs found that replacing face-to-face hospital care with telemedicine did not worsen psychosocial outcomes for adult cancer patients, and in fact, showed significant improvements in quality of life, anxiety, and distress. However, more research is needed to determine the impact on depression and the specific patient population that may benefit the most from telemedicine in oncology.

Summary: Oligometastatic disease is a condition in which cancer spreads to only a few distant sites, and it is associated with a more favorable prognosis compared to polymetastatic disease. Recent studies have identified specific molecular and genetic features that underlie the oligometastatic phenotype, suggesting the potential for personalized therapies. This scoping review highlights new clinical, biological, and methodological challenges in understanding and treating oligometastatic disease.

Glutathione: Lights and Shadows in Cancer Patients

Herbert Ryan Marini, Bianca Arianna Facchini, Raffaele di Francia, Jose Freni, Domenico Puzzolo, Liliana Montella, Gaetano Facchini, Alessandro Ottaiano, Massimiliano Berretta, Letteria Minutoli

Summary: In cases of cellular injury, excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can lead to various conditions, including cancerogenesis. Glutathione (GSH), the most abundant thiol-containing antioxidant, is crucial for restoring redox homeostasis. The conjugation of GSH with xenobiotics, such as anti-cancer drugs, can either reduce their harmful effects or enhance their toxicity. Further studies are needed to better understand the relationship between GSH and cancer. The use of GSH should only be considered under medical supervision, taking into account the appropriate timing and setting, as self-prescribed GSH lacks strong scientific evidence for its efficacy in reducing toxicity.
