Electrical stimulation of the retina with extraocular electrodes is a new approach to developing a retinal prosthesis for blind patients. We have evaluated stimulus and electrode configurations for an extraocular retinal prosthesis (ERP). In anesthetized cats, ERP disc electrodes of I mm, 2 mm and 3 mm diameter were sutured to the sclera over the lateral globe. Electrically evoked potentials (EEPs) were recorded over the ipsilateral visual cortex, which resulted from the retinal stimulation of the ERP electrodes with a return electrode placed at the medial canthus. Square pulses, triangular pulses and the effects of dark adaptation and electrode size on the amplitude and thresholds for a cortical response were investigated. Square pulses were more effective than triangular pulses for stimulating the retina. Dark adaptation leads to a large increase in the threshold for retinal stimulation. There was no difference in the threshold for stimulation between electrodes of I mm and 3 mm diameter. Stimulation of the retina with extraocular electrodes elicits an EEP that is similar to that generated by retinal stimulation with intraocular electrodes. The use of square pulses is preferred to triangular pulses to minimize the peak current density at the electrode-tissue interface. As there is little difference in the threshold current for retinal stimulation with I mm or 3 mm electrodes, 3 mm electrodes are preferred as this will decrease the charge density at the active surface of the electrode. Was Marilyn Monroe myopic and an early adopter of colored contact lenses? A review of the evidence and the early history of colored contact lenses

Minas T. Coroneo, Hans-Walter Roth, Ezra Maguen

Summary: The development of contact lenses in the late 1940s allowed both ametropes to be less dependent on glasses and to change their eye color using colored contact lenses. This had a significant impact on facial and ocular cosmesis, particularly for public figures like actors. Measurements of contact lenses and casts suggest that they were made for Marilyn Monroe, who may have been myopic, used colored contact lenses, and experienced contact lens overwear syndrome. The importance of ocular cosmesis is often overlooked in ophthalmic practice, but it is of great interest and importance to patients, as reflected in current techniques aimed at improving cosmesis.

Conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence area decreases with age and sunglasses use

Gareth Lingham, Jason Kugelman, Jason Charng, Samantha S. Y. Lee, Seyhan Yazar, Charlotte M. McKnight, Minas T. Coroneo, Robyn M. Lucas, Holly Brown, Louis J. Stevenson, David A. Mackey, David Alonso-Caneiro

Summary: This study used a deep learning-based tool to assess the change in conjunctival ultraviolet autofluorescence (CUVAF) area in young adults over an 8-year period and found that wearing sunglasses was associated with a faster reduction in CUVAF area. The results of this study are important for understanding the damage caused by ultraviolet radiation exposure to the eyes.

Prevalence of cataract among Australian commercial airline pilots

Kyoko Miura, Minas Coroneo, Jean Claude Dusingize, Catherine M. Olsen, Rick Tinker, Ken Karipidis, Ian Hosegood, Adele C. Green

Summary: This study estimated the prevalence of cataract in pilots by analyzing medical records of commercial airline pilots diagnosed with cataract between 2011 and 2016. The results showed that the prevalence of cataract in pilots aged 60 and above was 11.6%, while it was only 0.5% in pilots aged below 60. The study also found that there was no significant difference in cataract prevalence based on the ambient ultraviolet radiation levels, although the lowest prevalence was observed in the low-UV state of Victoria. Furthermore, cataracts in pilots aged 60 and above were mostly bilateral and mild, while cataracts in pilots below 60 were more likely to be unilateral and severe.

5-Fluorouracil in primary, impending recurrent and recurrent pterygium: Systematic review of the efficacy and safety of a surgical adjuvant and intralesional antimetabolite

Brendon W. H. Lee, Amitouj S. Sidhu, Ian C. Francis, Minas T. Coroneo

Summary: Pterygium is a UV-related disease characterized by aberrant wound healing process. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) as an antimetabolite agent shows suboptimal efficacy when used in pterygium surgery, but post-operative intralesional injections of 5-FU are promising in arresting progression. Additionally, 5-FU as a treatment modality without surgery effectively arrests progression in primary and recurrent pterygia.

Consecutive dosing of UVB irradiation induces loss of ABCB5 expression and activation of EMT and fibrosis proteins in limbal epithelial cells similar to pterygium epithelium

M. Domdey, M. A. Kluth, C. Masslo, C. Ganss, M. H. Frank, N. Y. Frank, M. T. Coroneo, C. Cursiefen, M. Notara

Summary: This study reports the expression of ABCB5 in pterygium stem cell activity and EMT-related events. It demonstrates the involvement of limbal stem cells in pterygium pathogenesis and suggests that UV-induced EMT in limbal epithelial cells contributes to pterygium development. The findings provide insights for identifying novel treatments against pterygium growth and recurrence.

Pseudo-hallucinations are for real in some patients with a bipolar disorder

Gordon Parker, Minas Coroneo

Summary: This study presents exemplars of pseudo-hallucinations experienced by individuals with bipolar disorder, suggesting their overrepresentation in this condition and arguing that their presence does not indicate psychosis. The historical definitions of pseudo-hallucinations are reviewed, and six profiles are presented, considering manifestations, sequencing, and response to medication in bipolar disorder patients. The findings indicate the richness of expression, variable time course, and response to medication of pseudo-hallucinations in individuals with bipolar disorder.

Improving the quality of rigid polyurethane foam sandwich insulation panels

Gulab Malunjkar, Hieu McElroy, Mirella Coroneo, Adebola O. Ogunniyi

Summary: Metal-faced sandwich panels with a rigid polyurethane foam core, known as insulated metal panels (IMPs), are produced through the injection of a reacting PU mixture in a closed cavity. However, this injection process often leads to defects and non-uniform foam distribution, negatively impacting the panel's performance. To address this issue, a Finite Element Method model was developed to simulate and optimize the foam injection and expansion processes, aiming to achieve defect-free products.
