Summary: The study found a significant shift in the epidemiology of CRBSIs in onco-hematological neutropenic patients, with an increase in Gram-negative bacilli infections and multidrug-resistant cases. Independent factors associated with GNB-CRBSIs include longer duration of catheter placement, older age, and prior use of penicillins. Additionally, inappropriate empirical antibiotic treatments led to an increase in mortality rates over time.

Summary: This study found that in patients with uncomplicated S. aureus CRBSI, the risk of treatment failure may be more influenced by factors such as liver cirrhosis and other prostheses, rather than the implementation of echocardiography. Routine echocardiography might not be necessary given the low rates of adverse outcomes observed, and could be considered on an individual basis.

Summary: The study found that compared to traditional sutures, using GRIP-LOK to secure non-tunneled hemodialysis catheters significantly reduces the risk of catheter-related bloodstream infection.

Summary: In this study, the authors shared their experience with catheter-related infections (CRI) in chronic hemodialysis (HD) patients and recorded the incidence, symptoms, complications, and mortality of CRI. The results showed that CRI was common in HD patients, with fever and chills being the main symptoms accompanied by inflammatory signs. The duration of catheter use and ferritin level were identified as independent factors predisposing to CRI in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical, and microbiologic characteristics of pediatric inpatients with PVC-related BSI. The research found that PVC-related BSI due to Gram-negative bacteria was more common than to Gram-positive bacteria, suggesting the need for initial broad-spectrum antibiotic coverage in hospitalized pediatric patients.

Summary: Ultrasound findings are useful for diagnosing CRBSI, but have low sensitivity and may not show abnormal results in some pediatric patients with CRBSI. Physicians should not exclude the diagnosis of CRBSI based solely on normal ultrasound findings, especially in patients with a central venous catheter and a positive blood culture.

Summary: This article reports a case of catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by a rare rapidly growing mycobacteria. These bacteria can be misdiagnosed as Gram-positive rods, so acid-fast staining is recommended when unidentified Gram-positive rods are detected in blood cultures.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical impact of early CVC reinsertion in patients with CRBSIs. Results showed a higher risk of persistent CRBSI with early reinsertion, but no significant difference compared to delayed reinsertion. There were also no significant differences in other clinical outcomes among the three groups.

Summary: This study aimed to prove that pre-emptive antimicrobial locks in patients at risk of bacteremia decrease infection. The results showed that patients treated with antimicrobial lock had a relative risk of bloodstream infection of 0.19 when compared with heparin lock within three months of treatment. Additionally, using antimicrobial lock for every ten catheter-critical colonizations can prevent one catheter-related bloodstream infection.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed 406 tunneled catheters implanted in 325 patients over a period of 14 years to evaluate the incidence of tunneled catheter-related bacteremia and identify potential factors associated with the first episode of bacteremia. The results showed a low incidence rate of bacteremia, which had minimal impact on catheter survival. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most frequently isolated microorganism, and the Palindrome(R) catheter, jugular vein, and being the first vascular access were identified as significant protective factors against tunneled catheter-related bacteremia.

Summary: This study found that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) could be detected in the fibrin sheaths from dialysis patients without clinical manifestations of infection. Bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, were found embedded in NETs in the fibrin sheaths. In rat models, transient bacteremia of S. aureus induced the formation of NETs in enlarged fibrin sheaths, and treatment with DNase I reduced both NET and fibrin sheath formation.
