MICs of tigecycline determined by Etest were 4 to 12 times (three ATCC strains) and 2 to 8 times (50 clinical isolates) higher in Mueller-Hinton agar from Merck than in Mueller-Hinton agar from either Oxoid or Difco. This was related to a much higher concentration of manganese in the medium from Merck.

Impact of an Antimicrobial Stewardship Program on the Incidence of Carbapenem Resistant Gram-Negative Bacilli: An Interrupted Time-Series Analysis

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of a multifaceted Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) on carbapenem use and incidence of Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacilli (CR-GNB). The results showed that the ASP significantly reduced carbapenem consumption and led to a decrease in the incidence density of CR-GNB, especially in CR-Klebsiella pneumoniae and CR-Escherichia coli, reversing the pre-intervention upward trend.

Summary: This study aimed to identify risk factors for carriage of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (MDR-GNB) upon admission to an intensive care unit (ICU). Through a case-control study, the researchers collected sociodemographic, clinical, and microbiological data and found that liver cirrhosis was the main comorbidity associated with MDR-GNB carriage.

Community-acquired bacteraemia by Klebsiella pneumoniae producing KPC-3 and resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam

Isabel Machuca, Julia Guzman-Puche, E. Perez-Nadales, I Gracia-Ahufinger, A. Mendez, A. Cano, J. J. Caston, A. Dominguez, J. Torre-Cisneros, L. Martinez-Martinez

Summary: This study describes the clinical and microbiological features of a community-acquired infection caused by KPC-producing K. pneumoniae resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam. The bacteria isolates were resistant to carbapenems and ceftazidime/avibactam, but susceptible to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Whole genome sequencing revealed genetic differences and the presence of a plasmid associated with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole resistance.

Integrating In Vitro and In Silico Analysis of a Cationic Antimicrobial Peptide Interaction with Model Membranes of Colistin-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between a cationic antimicrobial peptide (CAMP) derived from Cecropin D-like and bacterial-like model membranes of colistin-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPa) strains. The experimental analysis shows that the peptide interacts with the lipids of CRPa membranes, resulting in an increase in the phase transition temperature of the lipid systems and a transition in the peptide's secondary structure.

Phenotypic and Molecular Characterization of an Enterobacter ludwigii Clinical Isolate Carrying a Plasmid-Mediated blaIMI-6 Gene

Summary: IMI carbapenemases confer an unusual resistance pattern, making them difficult to detect. Commercial molecular methods usually do not include bla(IMI) genes, contributing to the hidden dissemination of bacteria producing these enzymes. We report a plasmid-encoded IMI-6 carbapenemase in an Enterobacter ludwigii isolate, providing insights into its genetic characteristics.

Heteroresistance to Colistin in Clinical Isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae Producing OXA-48

Irene Sanchez-Leon, Teresa Garcia-Martinez, Seydina M. Diene, Elena Perez-Nadales, Luis Martinez-Martinez, Jean-Marc Rolain

Summary: This study aimed to investigate heteroresistance in nine clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae producing OXA-48 and describe genomic changes in vitro. It was found that the heteroresistance in K. pneumoniae isolates was mainly attributed to insertions in the mgrB gene and point mutations in colistin resistance proteins. These findings contribute to the understanding of colistin resistance mechanisms in OXA-48-producing K. pneumoniae mutants.
