The association of celiac disease with type 1 diabetes mellitus is known, but the evolution of celiac disease is most frequently asymptomatic, without any clinical signs. Thus, diagnosis is impossible to make in the absence of serological tests. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence and the efficiency of IgA antitissue transglutaminase antibodies in the screening of celiac disease in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Method: During the course of 2008-2009, we performed an analytical clinical study that included the determination of IgA antitissue transglutaminase antibodies in a group of 119 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Fifty-seven percent of the subjects were male and 43% were female, with a mean age of 1174 years. Results: By evaluating IgA antitissue transglutaminase antibodies, we obtained a prevalence of 9.2% in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus, with a sensitivity and specificity of 80 and 82.6%, respectively. Conclusions: There is an increased prevalence of IgA antitissue transglutaminase antibodies, which suggests the need to use this method as an effective first-line test in the screening of celiac disease in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Potential Contribution of IL-27 and IL-23 Gene Polymorphisms to Multiple Sclerosis Susceptibility: An Association Analysis at Genotype and Haplotype Level

Ioana S. Barac, Mihaela Iancu, Vitalie Vacaras, Angela Cozma, Vasile Negrean, Dorel Sampelean, Dafin F. Muresanu, Lucia M. Procopciuc

Summary: The study revealed a significant association between IL-27-A964G and IL-27-T4730C polymorphisms and increased risk of MS, as well as the protective role of the IL-23-R381Q polymorphism. The G-C (A924G, T4730C) haplotype was identified as a significant risk haplotype for the development of MS.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the strain values of infants with severe and critical pulmonary stenosis (PS) with controls, both globally and regionally, and to assess the correlations between strain and conventional parameters. The results showed a significant difference in regional strain values between PS patients and controls. There were also significant changes in strain values from basal to apical location. However, there was no significant difference in strain values before and after intervention in PS patients. The study emphasizes the importance of using strain analysis, specifically RV global-4-chamber longitudinal strain, for evaluating RV function in infants with severe and critical PS.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the serum concentration of MGP, Gas6, and EGFR in lung cancer patients before and after the first cycle of chemotherapy, and to study how MGP, Gas6, and EGFR are modified after one cycle of chemotherapy. The results showed that there were no significant changes in the serum levels of MGP, Gas6, Vitamin K-1, and EGFR after the first cycle of chemotherapy. However, there was a strong positive correlation between MGP and VitK(1) serum values, and a moderate negative correlation between VitK(1) and EGFR in pre-treatment patients.

Neurofibromatosis in Children: Actually and Perspectives

Maria Lucia Sur, Ionel Armat, Genel Sur, Diana-Cristina Pop, Gabriel Samasca, Iulia Lupan, Teodora-Larisa Timis, Ioan-Alexandru Florian, Daniel Sur

Summary: Neurofibromatosis has three types, associated with benign tumors of the skin and nervous system. In rare cases, malignant tumors may also occur. Distinguishing between the types is crucial for diagnosis and treatment. Neurofibromin, a product of the NF1 gene, inhibits cellular proliferation and could be a therapeutic target for tumor management.

Cytokine Cascade in Kawasaki Disease Versus Kawasaki-Like Syndrome

Madalina Adriana Bordea, Carmen Costache, Alina Grama, Alexandru Ioan Florian, Iulia Lupan, Gabriel Samasca, Diana Deleanu, Peter Makovicky, Pavol Makovicky, Kvetoslava Rimarova

Summary: Kawasaki disease is a systemic vasculitis that mainly affects children under the age of five. Its main complications are coronary artery aneurysms and myocarditis. The exact cause is not fully understood, but genetic, infectious, and autoimmune factors are believed to play a role. There are similarities between Kawasaki-like syndrome associated with COVID-19 and Kawasaki disease, but the role of cytokines in its development is controversial. Accurate diagnosis and treatment of Kawasaki disease and Kawasaki-like syndrome are challenging.

Association of TLR4 Rs4986791 Polymorphism and TLR9 Haplotypes with Acute Myeloid Leukemia Susceptibility: A Case-Control Study of Adult Patients

Claudia Banescu, Florin Tripon, Anca S. Bojan, Adrian P. Trifa, Carmen Muntean, George Andrei Crauciuc, Alina Boglis, Marcela Candea, Erzsebet Lazar, Laura Jimbu, Mihaela Iancu

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of Toll-like receptor (TLR) genes on the risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and its relation to somatic mutations, clinical features, and overall survival of adult AML patients. The results showed that TLR4 rs4986791 is associated with an increased risk of AML, and combined variant genotypes of TLR4 rs4986790 and rs4986791 further increase the risk. The TLR9 C-G-A haplotype may be a promising approach for predicting AML susceptibility.

Radek Matlach, Maria Makovicka, Maria Miklosova, Pavol Makovicky, Jozef Muri, Kvetoslava Rimarova, Gabriel Samasca, Patricie Michalcova, Peter Makovicky

Summary: This article discusses the topic of suicides, with a focus on the mechanisms and realization of suicides by mentally ill individuals. Through the analysis of ten suicide cases, differences have been identified between victims with and without mental disorders in terms of the ways they choose to end their lives. Prevention of suicides in cases of people with a history of mental disorders is based on medical treatment and cooperation between the client, family members, and a psychiatrist.
