Summary: Adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with higher appendicular lean mass adjusted for body mass index (ALM(BMI)) and lower incident fall rates in community-dwelling older men. Monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids play important roles in the association between Mediterranean diet and falls risk.

Summary: The study found that lower calculated free testosterone was significantly associated with a higher risk of heart failure, suggesting a contribution of testosterone deficiency to heart failure incidence among older men. Further research is needed to determine if testosterone replacement therapy could be an effective strategy in reducing heart failure risk in older men.

Summary: The study indicates that postmenopausal breast cancer risk among normal weight women is associated with higher levels of CRP and testosterone, and lower levels of SHBG. These associations persist even after adjustments for BMI, fat mass index, or waist circumference.

Summary: The relationship between sex hormones and periodontitis in older adults is still controversial. A study found that lower bioavailable testosterone levels in males affected by sex hormone-binding globulin were associated with a higher risk of periodontitis, while estradiol levels in postmenopausal women were not associated with periodontitis.

Summary: This study examined the associations between dietary iron intake and frailty in older men. The findings suggest that maintaining or increasing total dietary iron and increasing or changing dietary nonheme iron intake for over 3 years are associated with a reduced incidence of frailty in older men.

Summary: The study found that there was no significant difference in fall and fracture rates between older men with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. Among men with T2DM, factors such as depression, specific medication usage, and a higher number of prescription medications were associated with increased fall rates, while higher hip bone mineral density was related to lower fracture rates.

Summary: A clear sex-specific pattern for SHBG levels with age was observed, with men showing a linear increase and women exhibiting a U-shaped pattern. Participants with more cardiovascular risk factors had lower SHBG levels. When stratified by age, older participants had higher SHBG levels. Multivariate models including specific factors explained a significant portion of the variance in SHBG levels. It is important to consider age-related changes in SHBG levels to avoid controversial results in assessing cardiovascular risk associated with SHBG.

Summary: Hypogonadism is common in HIV-positive men and tends to occur earlier compared to the general male population. It can be easily underestimated due to non-specific symptoms and overlaps with symptoms of HIV infection. Laboratory examinations are necessary to accurately diagnose hypogonadism in this population.

Summary: Parkinson's disease is characterized by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the brain and retina. Studies using optical coherence tomography have reported inconsistent changes in retinal layer thickness in patients with PD. Thinner retinal nerve fiber layer has been correlated with higher motor impairment scores, while altered foveal pit shape is associated with reduced contrast sensitivity.

Summary: The study assessed the oral health-related quality of life in older Australian men and explored the association between their general health conditions, socio-demographic factors, and oral health-related quality of life. The results showed that older Australian men exhibited good oral health-related quality of life. The study also highlighted the inter-relationship between perceptions of general health and well-being, health and oral health variables, and social background, supporting the integration of general health and oral health services for older Australian men.

Summary: In response to the overuse of prescription opioids, clinical practice guidelines support reducing or stopping opioid use in patients with chronic noncancer pain. This study evaluated and compared international guidelines on opioid reduction in these patients. Results showed agreement on when and how to deprescribe opioids, but lacked guidance on managing withdrawal symptoms, monitoring outcomes, and coprescribing sedatives. Quality assessment highlighted the need for more discussion on implementation and dissemination.

Summary: Pain is a global public health problem, and there is a growing interest in the association between nutrition and pain. However, the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and pain is not yet well established. This systematic review found that adherence to a healthy diet, particularly the Mediterranean diet, is inversely associated with pain in 50% of the included observational studies. However, further studies are needed due to limited and inconsistent evidence from longitudinal studies.

Summary: This study analyzed medication regimens used by older people living in residential aged care facilities and found that almost all residents experienced potentially suboptimal prescribing, with the majority having highly complex medication regimens. These findings suggest that most older people in residential aged care facilities may be at risk of medication-related harm.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates the prescribing practices for hospitalized older people, focusing on polypharmacy, potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) based on Beers criteria, and cumulative exposure to anticholinergic and sedative medications using the Drug Burden Index (DBI). The study aims to quantify the exposure to these measures on admission, analyze changes between admission and discharge, and assess the associations with adverse outcomes and medication costs. The findings show an increase in the number of medications during hospitalization and slight reductions in PIMs and DBI, with varying associations with adverse outcomes.

Summary: This study examined the coexistence of obesity and sarcopenia in older men and found that the prevalence and functional outcomes of sarcopenic obesity varied depending on different consensus definitions. The results indicated that the operational definition of sarcopenic obesity by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN-EASO) could accurately identify the functional impairment risk in older obese men.

Summary: This study evaluated the associations between dietary iron intake and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). It found that higher haem iron intake was associated with increased risks of five-point MACE, four-point MACE excluding all-cause mortality, all-cause mortality, congestive cardiac failure (CCF), and coronary revascularisation in older men over 5 years.
