Summary: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is commonly accompanied by depression, anxiety, and socioemotional dysfunction. However, the relationship between oxytocin and psychopathology in individuals with primarily food restriction (AN/AtypAN-R) or restriction plus binge/purge behaviors (AN/AtypAN-BP) has not been explored, which is crucial for understanding the neurobiology of different AN presentations.

Summary: This study examines the course of low-weight restrictive eating disorders in adolescents and finds that persistence is high, crossover occurs but is less frequent, and recovery is rare. Innovative treatment approaches are urgently needed for these disorders.

Summary: The vegetarian diet has gained popularity in recent years, leading to an increase in related research. This review examines studies published between 2000 and 2022 that explore the relationship between vegetarianism, weight, and eating disorders. Descriptive studies find that vegetarians have a lower BMI, and intervention studies demonstrate the effectiveness of a vegetarian diet for weight loss. However, the association between vegetarianism and eating disorders is more varied and depends on the samples and dimensions studied. The heterogeneity of findings is discussed in light of methodological limitations, providing directions for future research.

Summary: Eating disorders and obesity are major public health challenges, especially for young people. Recent studies have explored the potential of oxytocin as a novel therapeutic intervention for these conditions, due to its prosocial, anxiolytic, brain plasticity, and metabolic effects. This mini review aims to summarize the latest findings on the use of intranasal oxytocin (IN-OT) as a treatment for eating disorders and obesity, and address the gaps in our knowledge regarding its use.

Summary: Patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) are at increased risk of developing disordered eating behaviors and eating disorders (EDs) due to the emphasis placed on diet and ideal body weight. Body weight is a significant concern for CF patients, especially women. The onset of disordered eating is often linked to pulmonary infection. Research on the prevalence of EDs in CF patients is conflicting. More research is needed, considering factors such as comorbidities and important outcomes like lung health.

Summary: This study found that adolescents with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to experience disordered eating (DE), emphasizing the importance of early identification to prevent the development of eating disorders. The study established a significant association between ADHD and DE, highlighting the need for monitoring eating behaviors among adolescents with ADHD.

Summary: This article presents a systematic scoping review that evaluates the current research on the influence of competitiveness on eating behaviors in individuals with eating disorders and the general population. The results show that there are various conceptualizations of competitiveness in the eating disorder literature, and preliminary evidence suggests a possible association between competitiveness and eating disorder pathology, although the results are not consistent. Further research is needed to clarify these relationships and identify potential clinical implications.

Summary: This study analyzes the content related to eating disorders in online discussion forums dedicated to rock climbing. The findings reveal that eating disorders and negative body image are not ignored within the climbing community, as some claim. There is an ongoing conversation about eating habits among climbers, and while low body weight is still considered important, it may have become less significant over time. Climbing can also foster a positive body image by emphasizing performance and wholesome community values. An undue focus on low body weight among climbers should be balanced with proper nutritional advice and healthy role models, particularly for young climbers who may feel pressure to lose weight for performance.

Summary: This study used network analysis to examine the structure of symptoms and somatic concerns in individuals with eating disorders (EDs). The results showed that heightened sensitivity to somatic concerns played a central role in the symptom network and may contribute to the maintenance of ED symptoms. The findings have implications for the assessment and treatment of EDs.

Summary: This study is the first to investigate amygdala nuclei volumes in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). The results show that the volumes of several specific nuclei in the amygdala are significantly reduced in AN patients compared to healthy individuals, while others are less affected. Additionally, the study finds a positive association between leptin levels and alterations in certain nuclei.

Summary: Obesity is increasing rapidly, and current strategies for its treatment are limited. Understanding the neurobiology of appetite and energy intake can lead to more effective prevention and treatment. Appetite regulation is complex and influenced by genetic, social, and environmental factors, involving endocrine, gastrointestinal, and neural systems. Research is now yielding potentially effective treatment strategies, as highlighted in the findings presented at the Harvard Nutrition Obesity Symposium.

Summary: A study compared young individuals with severe obesity who underwent sleeve gastrectomy with non-surgical controls, and found that decreases in hormone OXT levels were associated with reductions in lean mass but not with decreases in fat mass or bone density. This suggests that OXT pathways may be targeted to prevent loss of lean mass following weight loss surgery.

Summary: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN (AtypAN) are complex neurobiological illnesses that typically onset in adolescence with a treatment-refractory and chronic illness trajectory. Aberrant eating behaviors in this population have been linked to abnormalities in food reward and cognitive control, but prior studies have not examined respective contributions of clinical characteristics and metabolic state. Research is needed to identify specific disruptions and inform novel intervention targets to improve outcomes.

Summary: This study found that adolescents with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and overweight/obesity (OV/OB) demonstrate hyperactivation in brain regions critical for the reward value of food cues compared to those with healthy weight (HW). Postprandial changes in subjective hunger are dependent on BMI and mediated by activation in the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC). These neurobiological differences may contribute to selective overeating in individuals with ARFID and OV/OB and could potentially be targeted in treatment.
