Objective: Our objective was to assess a 10-yr change in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome defined by the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) among Finnish men and women. Design and Subjects: Two cross-sectional population surveys were performed in Finland in 1992 and 2002. A total of 3495 participants aged 45-64 yr were included in the analysis. Results: In both years the metabolic syndrome was more common among men than women. In men the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome tended to increase slightly between 1992 and 2002, from 48.8-52.6% (P = 0.139) based on the NCEP definition, and from 51.4-55.6% based on the IDF definition (P = 0.102). In women the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome increased significantly from 32.2-39.1% based on the NCEP definition (P = 0.003), and from 38.0-45.3% based on the IDF definition (P = 0.002). In both sexes the prevalence of high blood pressure decreased, but the abnormalities in glucose metabolism increased between 1992 and 2002. The prevalence of central obesity increased in women between 1992 and 2002. Conclusions: In Finland the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, based both on the NCEP and IDF definitions, is higher in men than women. However, the increase in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, from 1992-2002, was significant only among women.

Summary: The study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescents' physical activity, sedentary behaviors, health-related fitness, and knowledge understanding. Findings show a decrease in out-of-school physical activity but an increase in physical activity at school during the pandemic. Sedentary behaviors decrease after the pandemic, and health-related fitness improves. The patterns of change in behaviors and knowledge understanding vary by grade and gender.

Summary: The Feel4Diabetes study recruited 12,193 children and their parents from six European countries to investigate the prevalence of childhood obesity and its association with socio-demographic characteristics and parental obesity status. The study found that living in low income or economically crisis countries, having a father with less education, and having one or both parents who were obese were associated with a higher likelihood of childhood obesity. These findings suggest the importance of targeting the whole family and considering socioeconomic factors in childhood obesity prevention programs.

Heart failure in obesity: insights from proteomics in patients treated with or without weight-loss surgery

Kristjan Karason, Nicolas Girerd, Johanna Andersson-Asssarsson, Kevin Duarte, Magdalena Taube, Per-Arne Svensson, Anne-Cecile Huby, Markku Peltonen, Lena M. Carlsson, Faiez Zannad

Summary: This study investigated the underlying mechanisms of obesity-related heart failure (HF) by analyzing 182 plasma proteins related to cardiovascular disease. The results showed that obesity is associated with inflammation, matrix remodeling, cardiometabolic hormones, and hemostasis, and identified three protein biomarkers that can predict HF with a specific association to obesity.

Improved Aerobic Capacity and Adipokine Profile Together with Weight Loss Improve Glycemic Control without Changes in Skeletal Muscle GLUT-4 Gene Expression in Middle-Aged Subjects with Impaired Glucose Tolerance

Mika Venojarvi, Jaana Lindstrom, Sirkka Aunola, Pirjo Nuutila, Mustafa Atalay

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term exercise and dietary intervention on glucose metabolism in middle-aged obese individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. The intervention resulted in decreased leptin levels, increased adiponectin levels, improved insulin sensitivity and maximal oxygen uptake in responders, but did not affect glucose transporter gene expression.

The Impact of Reimbursement for Non-Face-to-Face Chronic Care Management on Health Utilization Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes in Louisiana

Yixue Shao, Charles Stoecker, Dongzhe Hong, Elizabeth Nauman, Vivian Fonseca, Gang Hu, Alessandra N. Bazzano, Edmond K. Kabagambe, Lizheng Shi

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of reimbursement for non-face-to-face chronic care management on healthcare utilization among Medicare beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes in Louisiana. The results showed that receiving non-face-to-face chronic care management was associated with increased outpatient visits and decreased inpatient admissions and emergency department visits. In the future, the cost savings of non-face-to-face chronic care management in diabetes management could be further explored.

Summary: The distribution of lean mass is associated with the risk of all-cause mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes. A higher android-to-gynoid lean mass ratio is significantly associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Trends in obesity prevalence and cardiometabolic risk factor control in US adults with diabetes, 1999-2020

Gang Hu, Jonathan Ding, Donna H. Ryan

Summary: This study analyzed the trends in obesity prevalence and control of cardiometabolic risk factors among people with diabetes from 1999 to 2020. The results showed that the prevalence of obesity increased over time, while the percentage of people with glycemic control decreased. However, there was an improvement in blood pressure control and lipid control. Participants with obesity had worse glycemic control and lipid control compared to those with normal weight.

Effects of a Lifestyle Intervention in Young Women with GDM and Subsequent Diabetes

Gang Hu, Huikun Liu, Junhong Leng, Leishen Wang, Weiqin Li, Shuang Zhang, Wei Li, Gongshu Liu, Huiguang Tian, Shengping Yang, Zhijie Yu, Xilin Yang, Jaakko Tuomilehto

Summary: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a 9-month intensive lifestyle intervention on weight loss and cardiovascular risk factors in young women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and newly diagnosed diabetes. The results showed that the intervention led to significant weight loss, decreased waist circumference, body fat, diastolic blood pressure, fasting glucose, and HbA1c. However, there was a slight increase in HbA1c during the post-intervention period, along with an increased use of glucose-lowering agents.

Indolepropionic Acid, a Gut Bacteria-Produced Tryptophan Metabolite and the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Ratika Sehgal, Vanessa D. de Mello, Ville Mannisto, Jaana Lindstrom, Jaakko Tuomilehto, Jussi Pihlajamaki, Matti Uusitupa

Summary: The relationship between gut microbiota, diet, and the human body is complex, with tryptophan derivative indolepropionic acid (IPA) playing a crucial role in metabolic and immune functions and in the onset and development of metabolic disorders such as T2D and NAFLD. IPA levels are heavily influenced by diet, particularly dietary fiber, and show significant variations among individuals, which may be partially explained by genetic variants associated with specific diseases like T2D.

Summary: There is a relationship between parental obesity before pregnancy and offspring overweight before the age of two among children of Chinese women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). A study in China followed up with 774 offspring of women diagnosed with GDM from 2010-2012 until the age of two. The study found that maternal obesity before pregnancy was associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight at 1-1.5 years and 1.5-2 years of age, while paternal obesity before pregnancy was only associated with an elevated risk of offspring overweight at 1.5-2 years of age. The presence of both maternal and paternal obesity had an additive effect on the risk of offspring overweight at 1.5-2 years of age.
