This article presents an exploratory study on the current remanufacturing scenario and its main characteristics within the Brazilian Automotive sector. A review of the remanufacturing literature was performed regarding its evolution, benefits and the actors in the supply chain. Next, two case studies were conducted; one original equipment manufacturer, which remanufactures the products they produce, and one independent manufacturer, which remanufactures products and/or components originally produced by the Original equipment manufacturer. The remanufacturing characteristics for each case were analyzed and described. The results show that the original equipment manufacturing company has more advantages when compared to the independent company, specifically regarding the relationship with used product suppliers, remanufacturing operation and marketing of the remanufactured product. However, cooperation between the original equipment manufacturing and independent companies can be created and this could bring better remanufacturing operations and increased profitability for both. Summary: This study examines the environmental impacts and hydrological effects of applying LID practices in a highly urbanized tropical area. The assessment of three projects revealed that Scen.LID using LID controls was the best alternative for flood protection with the lowest life cycle impacts, while Scen.WELL, despite being more impactful, offered hydrological benefits.

Towards Circular Economy for More Sustainable Apparel Consumption: Testing the Value-Belief-Norm Theory in Brazil and in The Netherlands

Giovana Monteiro Gomes, Natalia Moreira, Thijs Bouman, Aldo Roberto Ometto, Ellen van der Werff

Summary: The apparel industry's environmental problems caused by fast fashion's throw-away culture can be minimized through circular business models and changes in consumer behaviors. This study analyzes consumers' willingness to acquire circular apparel using the Value-Belief-Norm (VBN) theory and finds that the variables from the theory explain circular behavior in the apparel industry. Materialistic values do not play a significant role in predicting willingness to consume circular clothing, and the VBN theory predicts willingness to consume circular apparel better in the Netherlands compared to Brazil.

Summary: The textile industry plays a significant role in the global market, but also brings extensive social and environmental impacts. This study focuses on the Brazilian textile industry to explore the barriers and opportunities for a transition to a circular economy. The findings show that while the industry still operates in a linear way, there are promising niche examples that inspire innovation and circular ways of value creation and capture.

Sustainable Circular Economy Strategies: An Analysis of Brazilian Corporate Sustainability Reporting

Summary: Corporate Sustainability Reporting provides crucial data for studying sustainability and the adoption of circular economy strategies by companies. However, there is a need for systematic classification and hierarchy of sustainable circular economy strategies, as well as more research on Corporate Sustainability Reporting in emerging economies. The analysis of Corporate Sustainability Reporting from multinational companies operating in Brazil suggests significant efforts towards a sustainable circular economy. Based on these findings and business process management theory, a Business Process for Sustainable Circular Economy framework is proposed.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
