Summary: The study used pycnometric and homologous series retention methods to investigate the volume and mean composition of water-rich layers partially adsorbed on the surface of HILIC column fillings with acetonitrile-water and methanol-water as eluents. The findings suggest that water is preferentially adsorbed on the surface of the HILIC bonded phase in hydroorganic eluents with high acetonitrile or methanol concentrations, forming several water-rich transition layers. In eluents with low acetonitrile or methanol concentrations, the amount of preferentially adsorbed water is minimal, and the retention behavior is similar to that of reversed-phase liquid chromatography.

Summary: A method was reported for preparing a poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone-co-pentaerythritol triacrylate copolymerization)-based monolithic capillary column for the separation of polar small molecular weight compounds with nano-liquid chromatography in hydrophilic interaction chromatography mode. The monolithic columns were prepared by copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone and pentaerythritol triacrylate in a binary porogenic agent consisting of methanol and water. The polymerization solution was optimized for column permeability, theoretical plate number, asymmetric factor, and retention factor. The N-vinylpyrrolidone-based hydrophilic interaction chromatography stationary phase showed satisfactory separation selectivity for polar test analytes.

Summary: In this study, polymerization mixture was optimized to synthesize poly(acrylamide-co-N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) monolithic stationary phases for HILIC of intact proteins. The monolithic structure exhibited a permeable and polar stationary phase suitable for HILIC. The monolith showed superior separation performance and lower ion interaction compared to silica-based particulate amide phase, enabling successful hyphenation with high-resolution mass spectrometry in HILIC of intact proteins.

Summary: Changes in glycan expression play a role in the development of diseases. Analyzing isomeric N-glycans using LC-MS/MS is challenging due to the large number of possible conformations. Derivatization of glycans is commonly used but time-consuming. This study focuses on efficient isomeric separation of native N-glycans using a nano ZIC-HILIC column. The stability and reproducibility of the column were confirmed.

Summary: This study utilized HILIC-ESI-MS to separate multiphosphorylated cyclic peptides and their positional isomers, evaluating the selectivity of HILIC columns and the impact of mobile phase on separation selectivity. It explored the retention mechanism of different peptides, finding that the classic hydrophilic partitioning mechanism was followed exclusively on amide and diol columns. The research also revealed that the position of phosphorylated amino acids in the peptide backbone had an impact on retention, enabling the separation of positional isomers using HILIC.

Summary: In this study, the Abraham's solvation parameter model is revisited to develop a fast and reliable method for the characterization of columns used in reversed-phase liquid chromatography and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography. By carefully selecting pairs of compounds with similar molecular descriptors, except for one specific property, the selectivity of a chromatographic system can be inferred based on the differences in chromatographic retention.

Summary: An unmatched or improperly matched sample solvent can distort the peak shape of analytes in chromatography. For retained compounds, pure ACN is the best sample solvent, while for compounds eluting close to the solvent peak, distortions occur with pure ACN. Water in the sample solvent favors electrostatic attraction for charged compounds, leading to increased retention time.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
