Benefits of Yoga on IL-6: Findings from a Randomized Controlled Trial of Yoga for Depression

Nicole R. Nugent, Leslie Brick, Michael F. Armey, Audrey R. Tyrka, Kathryn K. Ridout, Lisa A. Uebelacker

Summary: The study examined the effects of hatha yoga as an adjunctive intervention for major depression on inflammatory markers, focusing on IL-6. Results showed a significant reduction in IL-6 concentrations in the yoga treatment group compared to the health education control group. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects of hatha yoga on immune function.

Comparison of eating disorder characteristics and depression comorbidity in adolescent males and females: An observational study

Samuel J. Ridout, Kathryn K. Ridout, Jonathan Kole, Kelly L. Fitzgerald, Abigail A. Donaldson, Brian Alverson

Summary: Depression comorbid with eating disorders is common and can worsen the severity of both disorders. Little is published regarding depression and eating disorders in male adolescents. This retrospective observational study found that male adolescents had significantly greater pre-hospitalization weight loss and longer eating disorder duration, and were 1.6 times more likely to have comorbid depression compared to female patients, suggesting increased detection and treatment in adolescent males is warranted.

Relationships Between Telomere Length, Plasma Glucagon-like Peptide 1, and Insulin in Early-Life Stress-Exposed Nonhuman Primates

Kathryn K. Ridout, Shariful A. Syed, Hung-Teh Kao, Barbara Porton, Anna Rozenboym, Jean Tang, Sasha Fulton, Tarique Perera, Andrea P. Jackowski, John G. Kral, Audrey R. Tyrka, Jeremy Coplan

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between early-life stress and adult telomere length as well as neuroendocrine markers. The results showed that individuals reared with variable foraging demand (VFD) had longer telomeres compared to non-VFD individuals, and telomere length was associated with plasma glucagon-like peptide 1 (pGLP-1) and insulin resistance.

Summary: Suicide-related emergency department encounters declined in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but reached 2019 levels in June-August; compared to 2019, patients in 2020 were more likely to have co-occurring substance use disorders or lack mental health or suicide diagnoses associated with outpatient visits.
