A suitable extraction and purification method for the simultaneous liquid chromatography-mass spectrornetry (LC-MS) determination of five mycotoxins, three type A, diacetoxyscirpenol (DAS), T-2 toxin (T-2) and HT-2 toxin (HT-2), and two type B-trichothecenes, deoxynivalenol (DON) and nivalenol (NIV), has been optimised using a modified Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) method. Different solvents were Studied in the extraction procedure to obtain better recoveries, which ranged from 86 to 108%, using a 85/15 (v/v) Mixture of methanol/acetonitrile. The values obtained for recovery, repeatability and reproducibility of the optimized method are in agreement with Commission Directive 2005/26/EC for methods of analysis of Fusarium toxins. Finally, this optimized procedure was applied in wheat flour samples commercialized in Spain. (C)2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Breastfeeding-Related Practices in Rural Ethiopia: Colostrum Avoidance

M. Ascension Olcina Simon, Rosita Rotella, Jose M. Soriano, Agustin Llopis-Gonzalez, Isabel Peraita-Costa, Maria Morales-Suarez-Varela

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of colostrum avoidance and its associated factors among mothers of children under 2 years old in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The results showed that 56.1% of mothers avoided feeding colostrum. Only 2.6% of women initiated breastfeeding within the first hour after birth, as recommended by the WHO. Factors associated with colostrum avoidance included lower educational level, lack of healthcare services during delivery, perception of colostrum as dirty and dangerous, and lack of breastfeeding information from healthcare professionals. The findings of this study are important for designing breastfeeding education programs and interventions in Ethiopia and other developing countries.

Vitamins and Radioprotective Effect: A Review

Ines Lledo, Blanca Ibanez, Ana Melero, Alegria Montoro, Juan F. Merino-Torres, Nadia San Onofre, Jose M. Soriano

Summary: This review examines the radioprotective effect of vitamins through ex vivo, in vitro, and in vivo studies. A total of 38 articles were included, which investigated the radioprotective effect of vitamins A, C, D, and E either alone or in combination with other compounds. The use of vitamins, either in their natural form or as supplements, can help reduce the negative effects of radiation on the body, organs, and cells. Among the thirteen vitamins, only vitamin E, followed by vitamin C, A, and D, showed radioprotective properties.

Manufacture of a Potential Antifungal Ingredient Using Lactic Acid Bacteria from Dry-Cured Sausages

Tiago de Melo Nazareth, Jorge Calpe, Carlos Luz, Jordi Manes, Giuseppe Meca

Summary: This study aimed to isolate, identify, characterize, and quantify novel lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with antifungal activity from natural sources and develop a meat product ingredient. The screening process involved assessing the antifungal activity of isolated bacteria using overlay and agar diffusion assays. The most active bacteria-free supernatants (BFS) were further quantified using the microdilution method. A meat broth with high antifungal activity was selected for ingredient preparation, and antifungal compounds were identified in the fermented meat broth. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Pediococcus pentosaceus were the most promising LAB, with P. pentosaceus C15 producing nonanoic acid and phenyl ethyl alcohol, as well as higher levels of lactic and acetic acid.

Multivariate surface self-assembly strategy to fabricate ionic covalent organic framework surface grafting monolithic sorbent for enrichment of aristolochic acids prior to high performance liquid chromatography analysis

Jian Sun, Zheheng Zheng, Zixiao Jia, Jiabin Wang, Xucong Lin

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
