We report on the synthesis of siloxane-based monoliths in the presence of a two dimensional, perfectly ordered array of micro-pillars. Both methyltrimethoxysilane- and tetramethoxysilane-based monoliths were considered. The obtained structures were analyzed using scanning-electron microscopy and can be explained from the general theory of surface-directed phase separation in confined spaces. The formed Structures are to a large extent nearly exclusively determined by the ratio between the bulk domain size of the monolith on the one hand and the distance between the micro-pillars on the other hand When this ratio is small, the presence of the pillars has nearly no effect on the morphology of the produced monoliths. However. when the ratio approaches unity and ascends above it, some new types of monolith morphologies are induced. two of which appear to have interesting properties for use as novel chromatographic Supports. One of these structures (obtained when the domain size/inter-pillar distance ratio is around unity) is a 3D network of linear interconnections between the pillars, organized such that all skeleton branches are oriented perpendicular to the micro-pillar surface A second interesting structure is obtained at even higher values of the domain size/inter-pillar distance ratio. In this case. each individual micro-pillar is uniformly coated with a mesoporous shell (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Fundamental investigation of the dispersion caused by a change in diameter in nano liquid chromatography capillary tubing

Ali Moussa, Ken Broeckhoven, Gert Desmet

Summary: We present a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study investigating the extra dispersion caused by joining two capillary tubes with different diameters. The study focuses on the typical flow rates and diameters used in nano-LC, considering the doubling or halving of the diameter. CFD simulations allow for a fundamental understanding of the problem under perfect conditions, and the results show that the extra dispersion can be quantified and is surprisingly small under the investigated nano-LC conditions.

Impact-induced generation of single airborne microspheres and the subsequent vacuum-driven assembly of ordered arrays

Ward Van Geite, Ignaas S. M. Jimidar, Han Gardeniers, Gert Desmet

Summary: A universal and rapid dry assembly strategy is proposed to attain ordered arrays of micro- and nanoparticles. This method involves shooting agglomerated monodisperse silica, polystyrene, or PMMA powder microspheres against an impact plating and attracting them towards the pores of a silicon membrane device by applying a vacuum force. Excess particles are removed by brushing. The optimized conditions can be used to attain any desired 2-D particle arrangement on soft surfaces.

Microfluidic Validation of the Diffusional Bridging Effect Suppressing Dispersion in Multicapillary Flow Systems

Bert Vankeerberghen, Francois Parmentier, Gert Desmet

Summary: The efficiency of liquid chromatography separations can be greatly improved by using a bundle of parallel capillary tubes instead of packed bed columns. However, the presence of polydispersity caused by small differences in capillary diameter ruins this potential. The concept of diffusional bridging that introduces a cross talk between adjacent capillaries has been proposed to solve this issue, and this study provides the first experimental proof and validation of the theory behind it. The observed reduction in dispersion aligns well with theoretical predictions, suggesting that this theory could lead to the design of a new generation of chromatographic beds with unprecedented performance.

In-Depth Performance Analysis and Comparison of Monolithic and Particulate Zwitterionic Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography Polymer Columns

Haibin Li, Zhengjin Jiang, Gert Desmet, Deirdre Cabooter

Summary: The kinetic performance of different zwitterionic hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography polymer columns is evaluated and compared. The determination of a reliable characteristic length is complicated due to the different morphology of these column types and the heterogeneity of the monolithic columns. The use of the kinetic plot method is suggested for the comparative evaluation of these columns, which demonstrates the superior performance of the lab-made monolithic columns compared to the packed particle column.

Summary: In this study, gold nanoparticles with a diameter of 67 +/- 6 nm supported by vertically aligned shell-insulated silicon nanocones were formed for ultralow variance SERS. The morphology and optical properties of the substrates were assessed through various characterization techniques. The SERS activity was measured and compared to other lithographically derived assemblies. The low variance of our substrates makes them suitable for many potential SERS applications.

Influence of Wettability and Geometry on Contact Electrification between Nonionic Insulators

Ignaas S. M. Jimidar, Wojciech Kwiecinski, Gijs Roozendaal, E. Stefan Kooij, Han J. G. E. Gardeniers, Gert Desmet, Kai Sotthewes

Summary: Contact electrification is the exchange of electrical charges between two surfaces when they are in contact. This principle has been used in triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to generate electricity. This study demonstrates the important role of water in the charge exchange process between two insulating surfaces with different wettability. The charging process is faster and acquires more charge with increasing relative humidity, especially beyond RH = 40%. The study also reveals the effect of humidity on the charging time constant. The findings contribute to the understanding of how humidity levels influence the charging process and have implications for the design of more efficient TENGs and other eco-energy harvesting devices.

Minimize Precolumn Band Broadening with Immiscible Solvent Sandwich Injection

Koudi Zhu, Matthias Pursch, Bram Huygens, Sebastiaan Eeltink, Gert Desmet

Summary: The possibility of reducing pre-column band broadening (PreCBB) by using a sandwiching method with an immiscible liquid was investigated. It was found that the method can significantly improve the efficiency of early-eluting compounds. The presence of the sandwich plugs does not affect the repeatability of the analysis or the linearity of the calibration curves. However, there is a slight adverse effect on late-eluting peaks under certain conditions.

Structured microgroove columns as a potential solution to obtain perfectly ordered particle beds

Bert Vankeerberghen, Sandrien Verloy, Ignaas S. M. Jimidar, Han Gardeniers, Gert Desmet

Summary: We introduce a novel concept of producing ordered beds of spherical particles for liquid chromatography. This concept involves positioning spherical particles individually or stacked in micromachined pockets, forming an interconnected array of micro-grooves. Our breakthrough involves achieving uniform filling of the microgroove arrays with spherical particles using a rubbing approach. Numerical calculations show the advantages of this new concept over conventional packed beds in terms of order and reduced flow resistance.

Summary: This article reports a new homogenization approach to solve the general advection-diffusion equation in hierarchical porous media, which greatly improves the speed and accuracy of the solution. The proposed moment-based method can compute exact concentration moments and provides exact solutions for effective velocity and dispersion coefficients. It also analyzes the transient behavior and can be used to identify the necessary time and length scales for macro-transport conditions. The method is verified by comparing its predictions with direct numerical simulation results. Rating: 8/10.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
