A sensitive and reliable method using capillary zone electrophoresis with UV-diode array detection (CZE-DAD) has been developed and validated for trace determination of P-lactam antibiotics in waste, well and river water matrices. Due to the lack of sensitivity of the UV-vis detection, a solvent extraction/solid-phase extraction (SPE) method applied for off-line preconcentration and cleanup of water samples, in combination with an on-line preconcentration methodology named large volume sample stacking (LVSS) have been applied. The analytes included nafcillin, dicloxacillin, cloxacillin, oxacillin, ampicillin, penicillin G and amoxicillin. Average recoveries for water samples fortified with the studied beta-lactams at different concentration levels (1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mu g/L) were ranging between 94 and 99%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 10%. The precision, calculated as intra-day and inter-day standard deviations fell within acceptable ranges (3.3-7.2%). The limits of detection were estimated to range between 0.08 and 0.80 mu g L-1 for the studied compounds. All the samples analyzed were negative for all the analytes at these levels of concentration and the method showed its usefulness for the detection of these widely applied P-lactam antibiotics in different kinds of waters. A novel approach based on capillary liquid chromatography for the simultaneous determination of neonicotinoid residues in cereal samples

Summary: A simple and effective method using solid-liquid extraction followed by capillary liquid chromatography with diode array detection has been established for the extraction and determination of seven neonicotinoid insecticides in cereal samples. The method showed good linearity, repeatability, reproducibility, and trueness, with detection limits and quantification limits suitable for trace level determination in cereal samples below maximum residue limits. The advantages of miniaturized CLC technique and simplicity of solid-liquid extraction make this method a useful alternative for monitoring residues in cereal samples.

Summary: The study investigated the natural occurrence of six major ergot alkaloids in 60 cereal samples from Algeria, revealing that 20% of the samples were contaminated. Wheat was the most contaminated matrix, with ergosine, ergokryptine, and ergocristine showing the highest incidences. Barley had higher concentrations of total ergot alkaloids and was most commonly contaminated with ergometrine.

Summary: In this work, an electrophoretic approach based on micellar electrokinetic chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MEKC-MS/MS) was proposed for the simultaneous determination of nine neonicotinoids (NNIs) and the fungicide boscalid in pollen and honeybee samples. The method achieved improved separation efficiency and sensitivity through a stacking strategy and a scaled-down QuEChERS sample treatment. The results demonstrated that the proposed method is an environmentally friendly, efficient, sensitive, and useful alternative for the analysis of NNIs and boscalid.

Laura Carbonell-Rozas, Maykel Hernandez-Mesa, Laura Righetti, Fabrice Monteau, Francisco J. Lara, Laura Gamiz-Gracia, Bruno Le Bizec, Chiara Dall'Asta, Ana M. Garcia-Campana, Gaud Dervilly

Summary: This study evaluates the potential of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) to improve the analytical performance of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows for the determination of ergot alkaloids (EAs) in cereal samples. Collision cross section (CCS) values are used for the unambiguous identification of EA epimers, and they have been validated and compared with predictions from machine-learning models. A LC-travelling wave ion mobility (TWIM)-MS method is developed for the analysis of EAs in barley and wheat samples, resulting in improved signal-to-noise ratio and ion chromatogram quality compared to the LC-TOF-MS method.

Determination of Multiclass Cyanotoxins in Blue-Green Algae (BGA) Dietary Supplements Using Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Maria del Mar Aparicio-Muriana, Francisco J. Lara, Monsalud Del Olmo-Iruela, Ana M. Garcia-Campana

Summary: The consumption of blue-green algae (BGA) dietary supplements has increased due to their health benefits, but the production of cyanotoxins by cyanobacteria poses serious health risks. This study proposes the use of hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-MS/MS) to detect cyanotoxins in BGA dietary supplements. The method successfully separated and quantified target toxins, including microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR), microcystin-arginine-arginine (MC-RR), nodularin, anatoxin-a, and three non-protein amino acids. The analysis of different commercial supplements revealed the presence of DAB, AEG, and MCs in some samples, emphasizing the importance of monitoring these substances for safe consumption.

Summary: The increased consumption of blue-green algae (BGA)-based dietary supplements has raised concerns about food safety due to cyanotoxin presence. A study employed ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled to traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-TWIMS-QTOF) to establish a comprehensive database for phycotoxins. Cyanotoxins were confidently identified in commercial BGA dietary supplements based on retention time, m/z, and collision cross section values.

Summary: In this study, an ionic covalent organic framework (iCOF) surface grafting monolithic sorbent was prepared for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of aristolochic acids (AAs) in various samples. The density of quaternary ammonium ions in the iCOF was modulated for enhanced adsorption of AAs. The iCOF surface grafting monolithic sorbent was confirmed by different means. Several operating conditions were optimized to develop the online in-tube SPME-HPLC method, which showed good linearity, low limits of detection, and high recoveries for AAs in serum samples. This study presents a feasible approach for the application of COF-based monolithic sorbents in sample preparation.
