This review covers the application of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) in Chemometrics. The first applications of GAs in chemistry date back to the 1970s, and in the last decades, they have been more and more frequently used to solve different kinds of problems, for example, when the objective functions do not possess properties such as continuity, differentiability, and so on. These algorithms maintain and manipulate a family, or population, of solutions and implement a survival of the fittest strategy in their search for better solutions. GAs are very useful in the optimization and variable selection in modeling and calibration because of the strong effect of the relationship between presence/absence of variables in a calibration model and the prediction ability of the model itself. This review is not a complete summary of the applications of GAs to chemometric problems; its goal is rather to show the researchers the main fields of application of GAs, together with providing a list of references on the subject. Three-pesticide residue analysis in tomato using a fast pressure variation in-syringe dispersive liquid-phase microextraction technique coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry by assisting experimental design

Faezeh Amri, Ali Niazi, Atisa Yazdanipour

Summary: This study introduces an analytical procedure for determining diazinon, malathion and chlorpyrifos in tomato samples using a pressure variation in-syringe dispersive liquid-phase microextraction method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The proposed method utilizes chloroform as the extraction solvent and employs experimental design methods. The calibration curves are linear and the determination coefficients are high for all three pesticides. The method also demonstrates good precision and low detection limits.

Potential Role of miRNAs in the Acquisition of Chemoresistance in Neuroblastoma

Summary: The study found that the expression of specific miRNAs in neuroblastoma cells is associated with chemoresistance, with miRNA-15a, -16-1, -19b, -218, and -338 down-regulated in cells resistant to Etoposide. Additionally, the research suggests that these miRNAs may influence metastasis and have higher expression levels in therapy responders.

Summary: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play a crucial role in chemoresistance due to their high antioxidant defenses. This study found that combined treatment with Etoposide, Sulfasalazine, or an inhibitor of PKC alpha can sensitize CSCs to Etoposide by reducing their antioxidant defenses and inducing ferroptosis. The results suggest that PKC alpha inhibition inducing ferroptosis may be a promising strategy to combat CSC chemoresistance.

Extraction of Satureja Rechingeri volatile components through ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extractions and comparison of the chemical composition with headspace solid-phase microextraction

Maryam Kazemi, Ali Niazi, Atisa Yazdanipour

Summary: The study compared the efficiency of ultrasound-assisted extraction and microwave-assisted extraction for obtaining essential oils from Satureja rechingeri, and optimized the extraction parameters using response surface methodology. The results showed that both methods achieved high extraction yields of essential oils from S. rechingeri, with no significant difference between predicted and experimental data, indicating the models were highly capable of predicting extraction outcomes.

Summary: This study proposes a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the architecture of point-bar bodies in the Venetian Plain, Italy, by analyzing geophysical and sedimentological data. The results show that point-bar deposits mainly consist of fine to coarse sand and have lower electromagnetic conductivity compared to surrounding muddy overbank deposits.

Summary: A new sensitive and rapid method was developed in this study for the extraction and determination of trace amounts of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in milk samples through magnetic solid-phase extraction. The method optimized experimental parameters for simultaneous extraction and pre-concentration of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions, with good performance in terms of detection limits and relative standard deviation values.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of age and athletic level on reaction time development in young children and tennis players, as well as the potential improvement of motor performance through visual training using FitLight Trainer. The results demonstrate that reaction time development is primarily influenced by age and growth in athletes, while the visual training protocol using FitLight Trainer can enhance reaction time and motor performance in young tennis players, particularly those under 10 years old.

Summary: This study measured the concentration of trace and toxic elements in four unifloral honeys from Sardinia, Italy. The results showed that the concentration of analytes was low and toxic elements were present in negligible amounts. The study also found that the elemental signatures of honeys from different plants had geographical differentiation, and proposed a chemometric analysis method for botanical discrimination of honeys.

Summary: An ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor based on modified glassy carbon electrode was developed to detect tetracycline in food samples. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations were used to study the affinity and stability of antibiotics-aptamers complexes. The aptasensor, using kanamycin-specific aptamer, achieved a wide dynamic linear range and low limit of detection for tetracycline in milk samples.
