We present ab initio calculations of transport properties of palladium wires in the presence of hydrogen. Detailed investigations have been conducted with a pure palladium wire and with opening a gap inside the wire in which the transition between point contact regime and tunneling regime occurs. The effect of the presence of hydrogen in the gap is studied for different ranges of the gap size. The hydrogen mediated transport in the contact and tunneling regimes of the gap are analyzed and compared. It is predicted that only in large enough distances the hydrogen presence increases the conductance. The effect of additional hydrogen molecules on the gap is also studied. Cyanide Bridged Platinum-Iron Complexes as Cisplatin Prodrug Systems: Design and Computational Study

Ariela W. Kaspi-Kaneti, Srijana Bhandari, Alexander Schubert, Songping D. Huang, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: The study examines the potential of cyanide-bridged platinum-iron complexes as an anti-cancer Pt(IV) prodrug, presenting design principles for a dual-function prodrug that can release multiple cisplatin units and a ferricyanide anion upon reduction. The unique prodrug molecule consists of a hepta metal complex with a ferricyanide core and Pt(IV) centers bonded to the Fe(III) core through cyano ligands, with the functionality of the prodrug explored through density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Heat flow enhancement in a nanoscale plasmonic junction induced by Kondo resonances and electron-phonon coupling

Ali Goker, Huseyin Aksu, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: This study investigates the impact of plasmon-exciton coupling and electron-phonon coupling on entropy current, revealing that electron-phonon coupling can be used to control the entropy current in the system. The entropy current decreases monotonically with increasing temperature, but an anomaly of enhanced current is observed near 42 times the system's Kondo temperature due to electron-phonon coupling.

Summary: This study revisits the problem of describing nonequilibrium processes of photoinduced charge transfer in an effective three-state harmonic model. By obtaining equilibrium autocorrelation functions from all-atom simulations, the accurate description of photoinduced charge transfer processes in CPC60/THF using effective harmonic three-state models is demonstrated. Additionally, the small nuclear quantum effects in this system are highlighted.

Electronic Spectra of C60 Films Using Screened Range Separated Hybrid Functionals

Chandrima Chakravarty, Huseyin Aksu, Buddhadev Maiti, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: The electronic spectra of C-60 thin films were computationally studied using a combination of density functional theory (DFT) with a screened range separated hybrid (SRSH) functional and a polarizable continuum model (PCM). The results showed excellent correspondence between the frontier orbital's energy levels and the molecular system's ionization potential and electron affinity, leading to high quality electronic excitation energies.

Intersystem Crossing in Tetrapyrrolic Macrocycles. A First-Principles Analysis

Srijana Bhandari, Sunandan Sarkar, Alexander Schubert, Atsushi Yamada, Jameson Payne, Marcin Ptaszek, Eitan Geva, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: The photophysical properties of tetrapyrrolic macrocycles were analyzed using a novel framework of first-principles time-dependent density functional theory, revealing an increase in intersystem crossing (ISC) rate and competing fluorescence rate with hydrogenation, leading to a lower overall ISC yield. The increase in ISC rate was found to be due to enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) resulting from hydrogenation. The quantum mechanical perspective in the FGR theory and the polarization-consistent formulation achieved by the screened RSH used in the DFT calculations were crucial for predictive quality of the calculated rates.

Summary: Organic photovoltaics (OPV) is an emerging solar cell technology that offers advantages such as low-cost manufacturing, transparency, and solution processability. However, the performance of OPV devices is still disappointing compared to their inorganic counterparts, and there is a need for better understanding of how controlling the molecular-level morphology can impact performance.

Role of Dielectric Screening in Calculating Excited States of Solvated Azobenzene: A Benchmark Study Comparing Quantum Embedding and Polarizable Continuum Model for Representing the Solvent

Chandrima Chakravarty, Huseyin Aksu, Jessica A. B. Martinez, Pablo Ramos, Michele Pavanello, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: The low energy excited states of solvated azobenzene's conformational isomers were calculated using various DFT methods, considering the solute-solvent interaction implicitly or explicitly. The results show that the solvent has little effect on the predicted cis-trans S1 excitation energy gap, and the accuracy of azobenzene's S1 cis and trans energies relies on using a screened range-separated hybrid exchange-correlation functional. A simplified workflow with a single averaged embedding potential was also tested, but it led to larger deviations from experimental results, indicating a fundamental flaw in the approach where the solvent averaging time scale is much longer than the solute's electronic polarization time scale.

Achieving Predictive Description of Negative Differential Resistance in Molecular Junctions Using a Range-Separated Hybrid Functional

Srijana Bhandari, Atsushi Yamada, Austin Hoskins, Jameson Payne, Huseyin Aksu, Barry D. Dunietz

Summary: Range-separated hybrid (RSH) functionals combined with non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) are used to study negative differential resistance (NDR) in molecular junctions. The results reveal the importance of orbital localization, junction asymmetry, and computational study based on physically significant frontier orbitals in NDR phenomena.
