Carbon dioxide can act as an expanding medium to carry out enzymatic reactions. Particularly, by dissolving CO2 in mixtures comprising lipid-type substances and simultaneously increasing the pressure, the miscibility among reactants is enhanced, viscosity of the reaction mixture decreases, and diffusion of reactants and products is improved. Knowledge about the phase equilibrium behavior of the reactive mixture + CO2 allows an adequate selection of conditions to achieve the homogeneous phase during reaction. In this work, phase equilibria data of the pseudoternary system sunflower oil + ethanol + CO2 at two different conditions (313 K and 13 MPa; 333 K and 20 MPa) were investigated to provide an understanding of the phase behavior of vegetable oil ethanolysis reactions in CO2-expanded media. Measurements were carried out by the analytical static method, using a variable-volume view cell equipped with a cold end light and a magnetic stirrer. Experimental tie-lines were determined for both types of equilibria observed: liquid + liquid and liquid + supercritical phase equilibria. Additionally, the experimental compositions obtained were correlated using a group contribution thermodynamic model.

Metabolic Health Together with a Lipid Genetic Risk Score Predicts Survival of Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients

Lara P. Fernandez, Maria Merino, Gonzalo Colmenarejo, Juan Moreno Rubio, Tais Gonzalez Pessolani, Guillermo Reglero, Enrique Casado, Maria Sereno, Ana Ramirez de Molina

Summary: Despite advancements in surgery and therapies, small cell lung cancer (SCLC) remains one of the deadliest types of cancer. A metabolic precision approach for SCLC patients is proposed for the first time, highlighting the importance of metabolic health and lipid gene expression in predicting SCLC survival. Two lipid metabolism genes, racemase and perilipin 1, along with a genetic risk score of both genes, are shown to be biomarkers of SCLC survival. Importantly, controlling metabolic health, lipid gene expression, and lifestyle-associated environmental factors is crucial for increased SCLC survival.

Precision Nutrition to Activate Thermogenesis as a Complementary Approach to Target Obesity and Associated-Metabolic-Disorders

Marina Reguero, Marta Gomez de Cedron, Sonia Wagner, Guillermo Reglero, Jose Carlos Quintela, Ana Ramirez de Molina

Summary: Obesity and metabolic disorders are global issues associated with chronic diseases like cancer, which can be improved through dietary and nutritional interventions. The link between obesity and various diseases is mainly driven by metabolic and inflammatory changes in adipose tissue, making obesity a significant risk factor for cancer. Mediterranean diet and physical activity can reduce the risk of obesity-related diseases.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a model based on commonly requested hematological variables for early discrimination of patients with COVID-19 from those with other viral pneumonia. It identified 10 variables for the characterization of COVID-19 and found that low levels of leukocytes could serve as a primary marker for COVID-19 detection. The results suggest that commonly requested laboratory variables can help distinguish COVID-19 and stratify patients.

Summary: In recent years, various methods have been studied for the extraction of natural carotenoids. Conventional methods often require a large amount of solvents and a lengthy extraction process. However, pressurized liquid extraction has shown promising results. This study focused on the extraction of carotenoids from the green and orange biomasses of microalga Dunaliella salina DunaDZ1 using different organic solvents and temperatures. The results showed that higher temperatures had a positive effect on extraction yield, while the best antioxidant activity was obtained at a specific temperature and with a certain solvent.
