Blood vessels are highly organized and complex structure, which are far more than simple tubes conducting the blood to almost any tissue of the body. The fine structure of the wall of blood vessels has been studied previously using the electron microscope, but the presence the telocytes associated with vasculature, a specific new cellular entity, has not been studied in depth. Interestingly, telocytes have been recently found in the epicardium, myocardium, endocardium, human term placenta, duodenal lamina propria and pleura. We show the presence of telocytes located on the extracellular matrix of blood vessels (arterioles, venules and capillaries) by immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Also, we demonstrated the first evidence of a primary cilium in telocytes. Several functions have been proposed for these cells. Here, the telocyte-blood vessels cell proximity, the relationship between telocytes, exosomes and nervous trunks may have a special significance.

Ultrastructural evidence for telocytes in equine tendon

Maria J. Luesma, Irene Cantarero, Ana I. Sanchez-Cano, Clementina Rodellar, Concepcion Junquera

Summary: The three-dimensional ultrastructure of tendons is complex, with the presence of telocytes, a specific type of interstitial cell, near blood vessels. These telocytes have characteristic telopodes and can release exosomes, potentially playing a special role in tendon homeostasis.

Supporting Evidence of Human Enteric Nervous System Adult Neurogenesis: Presence of Primary Cilia and Adult Neurogenesis Markers

Pablo Iruzubieta, Irene Cantarero, Marta Monzon, Manuel Lahoz, Concepcion Junquera

Summary: In this study, we investigated adult neurogenesis in the enteric nervous system (ENS) of humans using ultrastructural and immunohistochemical techniques. We found markers of immature neurons in the ENS, supporting the existence of adult neurogenesis. Additionally, our findings suggest that Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICCs) may serve as the original neural stem cells, generating newly-born neurons through asymmetrical cell division.

Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for pudendal nerve entrapment syndrome

Maria Jose Luesma, Ines Gale, Jose Fernando

Summary: Pudendal nerve entrapment syndrome can be easily misdiagnosed or confused with other pelvic floor diseases, requiring a detailed history and physical examination for diagnosis and treatment. Treatment includes lifestyle changes, drug therapy, and physiotherapy, with invasive therapies as an option for failure of conservative measures.

Is Supplementation with Micronutrients Still Necessary during Pregnancy? A Review

Sonia Santander Ballestin, Marta Isabel Gimenez Campos, Jara Ballestin Ballestin, Maria Jose Luesma Bartolome

Summary: Proper nutrition during pregnancy is crucial for both maternal and fetal health, and micronutrient supplementation can help prevent congenital defects and other diseases. However, adjustments to recommended intake levels are needed based on experimental studies.

Stromal cells of giant cell tumor of bone show primary cilia in giant cell tumor of bone

Tomas Castiella, Pablo Iruzubieta, Eva Monleon, M. Jose Cardiel, Jesus Gomez-Vallejo, Marta Monzon, Ma Concepcion Junquera

Summary: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) contains primary cilia in tumoral stromal cells, with Hedgehog signaling pathway activation observed. This indicates the significant role of primary cilia in GCTB tumorigenesis through Hh signaling in stromal cells.

Antitumor Anesthetic Strategy in the Perioperatory Period of the Oncological Patient: A Review

Sonia Santander Ballestin, Andrea Lanuza Bardaji, Cristina Marco Continente, Maria Jose Luesma Bartolome

Summary: The stress response and immunosuppression caused by surgical aggression and anesthetic agents can lead to inadvertent dispersion and progression of tumors. Inhaled anesthetics and opioids have been found to benefit immunosuppression, cell proliferation, and angiogenesis, creating an ideal environment for tumor progression. However, the potential benefits of reducing their use and exploring alternative anesthetic techniques to protect patients from metastasis are still being investigated.

Surgical Treatment of Obesity. Special Mention to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Vertical Gastrectomy

Maria Jose Luesma, Jose Fernando, Irene Cantarero, Pilar Lucea, Sonia Santander

Summary: The prevalence of obesity has been increasing rapidly in recent decades, making it one of the most impacting diseases on global health. It is a chronic disease associated with various comorbidities that result in a reduced life expectancy and quality of life. The treatment of obesity requires a multidisciplinary approach by a specialized medical team and can be done through conservative or surgical treatments. Vertical gastrectomy, mixed techniques, and gastric bypass are the most commonly used surgical techniques. The choice of technique should consider the characteristics of each patient and the surgical team's experience.

Toxicity of Different Chemical Components in Sun Cream Filters and Their Impact on Human Health: A Review

Sonia Santander Ballestin, Maria Jose Luesma Bartolome

Summary: Some chemical components in sun cream filters have potential risks to health and the environment. This study compares conventional commercial sunscreens with natural products in terms of their endocrine-disrupting effects. Different sun cream filters were evaluated and compared, considering safety assessments from Environmental Working Group and the EU Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals Regulation. While some organic sun cream filters pose risks, inorganic filters like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have very low risk as they are not absorbed through intact or damaged tissues. However, the legislation does not require manufacturers to specify the concentration of each substance, providing limited information for consumers.
