Death of developing neurons: New insights and implications for connectivity

The concept that target tissues determine the survival of neurons has inspired much of the thinking on neuronal development in vertebrates, not least because it is supported by decades of research on nerve growth factor (NGF) in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Recent discoveries now help to understand why only some developing neurons selectively depend on NGF. They also indicate that the survival of most neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) is not simply regulated by single growth factors like in the PNS. Additionally, components of the cell death machinery have begun to be recognized as regulators of selective axonal degeneration and synaptic function, thus playing a critical role in wiring up the nervous system.

Summary: Maternal depression during pregnancy did not show an association with serum BDNF levels, while maternal anxiety was correlated with increased BDNF in mothers of male infants. Male infants had lower serum BDNF levels compared to female infants, but this was not related to maternal anxiety. The study did not find evidence of BDNF transfer across the placenta, indicating the placenta's protective role against maternal changes in BDNF levels.

Summary: Martijn Dekkers and Felix Salfelder et al. use experimental approaches and mathematical modeling to investigate the contribution of sensory neurons in C. elegans to context-dependent switching between NaCl attraction and avoidance. Their results suggest that sensory adaptation allows for dynamic modulation of behavioral responses and plays a role in balancing exploration and exploitation during foraging. This study highlights the importance of sensory modulation in controlling an animal's behavioral state and decision-making processes.

Summary: In the central nervous system, both NT3 and TrkC have unique roles in the assembly of neuronal circuits. NT3 activates TrkC at lower concentrations, but at high concentrations, it can also activate TrkB and down-regulate TrkC. These findings are important for understanding neurodevelopment and the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases.
