Summary: Spontaneous synchronous activity is essential for the development of brain circuits. This study demonstrates that a small population of highly connected GABAergic neurons, known as hub neurons, orchestrates the synchronous activity in the mouse barrel cortex. These hub neurons exert a strong inhibitory influence on both spontaneous and sensory-evoked population bursts, and their impact is proportional to their functional connectivity.

Summary: Using optogenetics and multi-regional Neuropixels recordings, the study found that the claustrum has different effects on cortical activity depending on brain area, layer, and cell type. Brief claustrum stimulation mainly affects fast spiking neurons and leads to a modest decrease in population activity. Prolonged claustrum stimulation affects a larger number of cortical neurons and can either increase or decrease spiking activity. Excitation occurs more in posterior regions and superficial layers, while inhibition predominates in frontal regions and deeper layers. These findings suggest organization of claustro-cortical circuits into functional modules.

Emerging evidence suggests a contribution of epigenetic changes to cisplatin-induced kidney injury. Potential therapeutic targets have been identified, but their effects on the efficacy of cisplatin chemotherapy need further evaluation.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a neurodegenerative and vascular disease that can lead to blindness and is caused by complications of diabetes mellitus. Current therapies are limited in their effectiveness, and there is a need for more effective alternative treatments to target glycemic, vascular, and neuronal parameters, as well as cellular damage from inflammation and oxidative stress. Dietary polyphenols have shown potential in reducing oxidative and inflammatory markers in various diseases, including metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. However, more data from human studies is needed to determine the therapeutic potential of these compounds. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effects of dietary phenolic compounds on the pathophysiology of diabetic retinopathy, particularly in relation to oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms, using evidence from experimental studies.

Summary: No specific or adjunctive therapies currently exist for treating cerebral malaria (CM). CM is a neurological manifestation of malaria infection caused by Plasmodium falciparum. Despite various factors contributing to CM, the underlying pathogenesis remains unclear. However, recent studies utilizing molecular, immunological, neuroradiological, and machine-learning approaches have provided new insights into understanding the determinants of CM in humans, which may lead to the development of new and targeted adjunctive therapies.

Summary: Understanding ocean currents' impact on larval transport is crucial for studying population connectivity in marine invertebrates. This study examined population connectivity in New Zealand green-lipped mussels using particle tracking experiments and compared it with genetic data. The results showed a significant correlation between oceanographic circulation and genetic structure, suggesting the importance of hydrodynamic processes. However, no evidence of an oceanographic barrier was found in the Cook Strait region.
