Summary: The study indicates that parathyroidectomy should be considered for all pregnant patients with diagnosed hyperparathyroidism, regardless of symptomatology. Surgery poses fewer risks than conservative treatments and leads to better fetal outcomes. Surgery in the third trimester is feasible and should be considered for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.

Summary: A longitudinal cohort study found that patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) who underwent parathyroidectomy were at a higher risk of kidney stone events in the immediate years after treatment compared to those managed nonoperatively, although the adjusted risk declined over time.

Summary: This study evaluated the underperformance of parathyroidectomy in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and explored barriers to care. It was found that insurance type was associated with undergoing surgery, with patients on governmental insurance less likely to undergo surgery and waiting longer for surgery. Barriers to referral and access to surgery should be investigated and addressed to optimize patients' access to care.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term impact of parathyroidectomy (PTX) on quality of life (QoL) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The results showed that QoL significantly improved at 1 year and was sustained for at least 3 years after PTX. Additionally, while the physical component score normalized after 3 years, the mental component score remained lower than the reference population.

Summary: Overall, the survival of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in a community population in the United States was not significantly different from that of white Minnesota residents. However, individuals with a maximum serum calcium level > 10.8 mg/dL had an increased risk of mortality. Survival was improved after parathyroidectomy in patients with serum calcium levels >10.8 mg/dL.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of microwave ablation (MWA) and parathyroidectomy (PTX) for the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) and found no significant differences in cure rate, persistent and recurrent disease rates, or major complications between the two methods. MWA had the advantage of shorter procedure time and smaller incision length, but slightly higher costs.

Summary: Patients undergoing medical treatment for mild pHPT have higher calcium and PTH levels. Comparing the outcomes of medical management and parathyroidectomy, it is found that parathyroidectomy has superior results in biochemical and musculoskeletal aspects. Therefore, parathyroidectomy should be considered a better treatment option for most patients with mild pHPT.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the long-term recurrence rates of sporadic PHPT after successful parathyroidectomy. The results showed that approximately 1.56% of patients with sporadic PHPT developed recurrence following surgery. The initial diagnosis and procedure type did not have a significant impact on recurrence rates, emphasizing the importance of consistent long-term follow-up.

Summary: This study evaluated parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in terms of localization, surgical characteristics, and treatment outcomes. The results showed that ultrasound, computed tomography, and single-photon emission computed tomography accurately localized the pathological parathyroid gland. Intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring and nerve monitoring shortened operating time and improved surgical outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to revisit the current age criterion of 50 years for surgical candidacy in patients diagnosed with asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). A Markov model was constructed based on past publications to compare two potential treatment algorithms, parathyroidectomy (PTX) and observation. The results suggest that PTX is advantageous for asymptomatic PHPT patients older than 50 years, indicating a need for revisiting the current guidelines for surgical treatment in young asymptomatic PHPT patients.

Summary: During pregnancy, diagnosis and management of primary hyperparathyroidism require close monitoring of serum calcium levels. Medical management options are limited and surgery is advised during the 2nd trimester in the presence of severe hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia should be avoided to minimize maternal and fetal complications.

Summary: Patients with PHPT presenting with fatigue as a symptom are more likely to be female, have a prior fracture, lower preoperative serum calcium, and normocalcemic PHPT. They also have a higher incidence of multiglandular disease. Despite the complexity of their disease, surgical cure rates are equivalent to patients without fatigue as a symptom.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of Ceratonia siliqua on bone mineral density (BMD) as a nonpharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. The results showed that long-term administration of C. siliqua significantly increased BMD compared to the control group and the ovariectomized group after 3 and 6 months of intervention. Therefore, C. siliqua may be considered a non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Summary: The study evaluated the biological variation (BV) of 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (24,25(OH)2D) in the European Biological Variation Study (EuBIVAS) cohort samples to determine the analytical performance specifications (APS) for 24,25(OH)2D. The results showed that the variation of 24,25(OH)2D concentration over a 10-week period was 34.6%, and methods for detecting significant changes in 24,25(OH)2D production would need relative measurement uncertainties of less than 14.9% or 10.5%, depending on the level of significance.

Summary: The Directive 2010/63/EU has been in force for more than a decade, bringing significant improvements and novel requirements for animal welfare and research integrity in scientific experiments. The Directive provides clear provisions for various aspects such as scope, authorization procedures, animal welfare bodies, national committees, cost/benefit analysis, severity classification, retrospective assessment, and statistical reporting. The authors, based on their experience working in this field, have identified indicative areas in existing legislative texts and guidance documents that may impact animal welfare and scientific integrity. They discuss suggested solutions to address these areas through potential future revisions in legislation or other actions to benefit animal welfare, aiming to clarify and simplify these issues for all stakeholders involved.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate prognostic tools for predicting patient recovery after hip fractures and investigate the correlation between pre-fracture motor and functional statuses. The study included 80 patients with hip fractures and evaluated patient history, previous falls, fracture type, and overall survival. The results showed that patients' physical and functional statuses were correlated with their postoperative recovery.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) on volumetric Bone Mineral Density (vBMD) and bone geometry. The study found that both trabecular and cortical bone were adversely affected in postmenopausal women with PHPT, with greater effects on cortical bone at the radius compared to the tibia, indicating attenuation of deleterious effects on weight-bearing bone.

Summary: Hip fractures in the elderly are a growing concern, with post-operative rehabilitation being crucial for improved outcomes. However, there is a lack of evidence-based guidelines for the most effective rehabilitation pathways. This review aims to explore these pathways and provide objective evaluation through pre-operative and post-operative scores.

Summary: Tuberculosis is a commonly misdiagnosed infectious disease that can mimic bone tumors or metastatic lesions in the spine. In patients with cancer and signs of lymph node involvement and bone lesions, exploring other potential causes is crucial for diagnosis. This case study highlights the importance of maintaining a high level of suspicion, as a lytic lesion initially misdiagnosed as a metastatic lesion turned out to be renal cell carcinoma.

Summary: Alkaline phosphatases are isoenzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of organic phosphate esters in the extracellular space. Zinc and magnesium are important co-factors for their biological activity. They are found in various tissues, but most are derived from the liver and bone in the bloodstream. However, their exact physiological function remains largely unknown.
