The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a 48-week multicomponent exercise program could improve the risk factors for fall and hip fracture. Fifty elderly women 65-70 years of age participated. These participants were divided into an exercise group (25 subjects) that attended an exercise program and a control group (25 subjects) that did not. The exercise program included stretching for 9 min, strength training for 10 min followed by 23 min of weight-bearing exercise at an intensity above 65%-75% of the maximal heart rate, and 18 min of balance and posture correction training. The program was conducted three times per week for 48 weeks. The 10-m maximal walk time, maximal step length, and eyes-open-one-legged-stand time in the exercise group improved significantly (P < 0.05). Concerning deoxypyridinoline, the exercise group achieved a significant improvement (P < 0.05) after the 48 weeks. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck and trochanter in the exercise group was significantly increased after the exercise program; also body sway was significantly improved (P < 0.05). In conclusion, a multi-component exercise program with weight-bearing exercise at a moderate intensity and gait training may be effective in offsetting a decline in BMD and improving aggravation of bone resorption in this population. In addition, this program has a positive effect on postural stability and gait ability.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between physical function, lipid profile, and cognitive frailty in community-dwelling Korean older adults. The 6-minute Walk Test, Timed Up and Go test, and Five Times Sit-to-Stand test were found to be closely related to cognitive frailty and could potentially serve as prognostic markers.

Gait Speed and Sleep Duration Is Associated with Increased Risk of MCI in Older Community-Dwelling Adults

Eunju Yoon, Seongryu Bae, Hyuntae Park

Summary: This study examines the associations between sleep duration and gait speed and the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older adults. The results suggest that slower gait speed and poor sleep duration are associated with an increased risk of developing MCI. Additionally, the combination of poor sleep and slower gait is linked to a higher risk of MCI. Furthermore, the relationship between sleep duration, gait speed, and MCI risk is non-linear.

Summary: The study demonstrated that VRCT and exercise training significantly improve cognitive function and physical health in older adults with MCI. VRCT training reduces theta band power, while exercise training decreases the delta/alpha ratio. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to maximize the benefits for MCI patients.

Associations between the Timing and Nutritional Characteristics of Bedtime Meals and Sleep Quality for Nurses after a Rotating Night Shift: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Jung Hoon Park, Hyuntae Park, Seongryu Bae, Jiyeon Kang

Summary: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the timing and nutritional characteristics of bedtime meals and sleep quality in nurses after rotating night shifts. The study involved 128 nurses from a university hospital in South Korea. Data was collected on the first night of two or three consecutive routine night shifts. The results showed that a shorter time interval between meals and sleep was associated with longer objectively measured total sleep time, and a higher proportion of protein in meals was linked to better objectively measured sleep efficiency.

Nonlinear Associations between Physical Function, Physical Activity, Sleep, and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults

Seongryu Bae, Minwoo Jang, Gwon-Min Kim, Ja-Gyeong Yang, Ngeemasara Thapa, Hye-Jin Park, Hyuntae Park

Summary: This study examines the relationship between physical function, physical activity, sleep, and depressive symptoms in older adults. The results show that the Six-Minute Walk Test, gait speed, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity exhibit a nonlinear relationship with depressive symptoms, while other physical functions show a linear relationship. Sleep time follows a U-shaped trend starting at approximately 390 minutes. After adjusting for various factors, the Six-Minute Walk Test, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and sleep time are significantly associated with depressive symptoms.
