Summary: NRG/RTOG 9804 is the only randomized trial assessing the impact of whole breast irradiation versus observation in women with good-risk ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) following lumpectomy. The study found that whole breast irradiation significantly reduced the risk of ipsilateral breast recurrence for DCIS with durable effects at 15 years.

Summary: This study reports the long-term results of trabeculectomy (LEC) for secondary glaucoma in hereditary transthyretin (ATTRv) amyloidosis patients and its correlation with prior vitrectomy. The study involved 31 consecutive eyes of 20 ATTRv amyloidosis patients who underwent LEC between 2007 and 2020. The results showed that LEC and additional needling procedures can provide some control over intraocular pressure (IOP) but the overall postoperative outcomes of LEC for ATTRv amyloidosis remain unsatisfactory.

Summary: This research found that appropriate presurgical mandibular incisor decompensation can play a significant role in the long-term stability of Class III surgical orthodontic treatment. By comparing the treatment process and outcomes of two groups of patients, it was found that the inclination angle of mandibular incisors and the size of overjet post-surgery are correlated with the severity of skeletal Class III relationship.

Summary: In patients with HOCM and moderate septal thickness with SAM-related MR, addressing abnormalities of the MV apparatus may become necessary as septal hypertrophy decreases. However, performing myectomy alone appears to be associated with a better postoperative course and a trend towards lower cardiac mortality at follow-up, despite a higher rate of residual moderate MR.

Summary: The study reveals quantitative transformations of structure in the fillet head of lengthy differentially quenched rails after severe plastic deformation using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at micro- and nanoscale levels. The formation of specific subgrain structure and cementite particles in the surface layers of rails after long-term service is demonstrated.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the survival prognosis of patients with biliary carcinoma who underwent HPD with hepatectomy and the impact of LNM status on the decision of surgical indications. The results showed that peripancreatic LNM and portal vein involvement were poor prognostic factors and should be excluded from the surgical indications for HPD.

Summary: The Commando procedure is a challenging surgery aiming to replace severely affected heart valves when pathological processes such as infective endocarditis or calcification occur. Despite its high mortality rate, rates of re-intervention and infective endocarditis recurrences following the Commando procedure are satisfactory, highlighting the need for aggressive strategies to improve long-term outcomes.

Summary: This study proposes a mixture model to design phase III trials with overall survival as the primary endpoint, using pCR information from previous trials. The comparison between arms is based on the difference of restricted mean survival times, and the effect size and sample size for overall survival rely on the probability of the binary response and survival distribution. Sample size calculations under different scenarios are provided along with the R package survmixer for implementation.

Summary: In this third paper of the series, the results of the reverberation mapping campaign on active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H beta emission-line profiles are presented. Spectra from 15 Palomar-Green quasars obtained between the end of 2016 and May 2021 were used. The campaign combined long time spans with relatively high cadence, allowing for the measurement of H beta time lags and estimation of black hole masses. The study also revealed diverse geometry and kinematics of the broad-line region (BLR) through velocity-resolved lags.

Summary: Surgical resection of peritoneal metastases from neuroendocrine tumors can lead to prolonged survival in selected patients, with comparable outcomes to patients operated for liver metastasis. Despite a high recurrence rate, surgery should be considered a standard treatment for peritoneal metastases in patients with resectable disease.

Summary: After a minimum follow-up of 15 years, hybrid fixation of primary TKA for osteoarthritis provides significantly higher clinical benefits compared with cemented fixation, but the differences were not clinically relevant. Hybrid fixation provides longer overall survival, although the femoral component survival was similar between groups.

Summary: First metatarsophalangeal joint arthrodesis is effective for hallux rigidus, but patients with prior hallux valgus surgery had worse clinical outcomes compared to those who underwent primary surgery for hallux rigidus. Both groups showed significant improvement in AOFAS and VAS pain scores postoperatively, but the primary group had better scores. There were no significant radiological differences between the groups after arthrodesis.
