Summary: Valproic acid (VPA) can adjust gene expression patterns in thyroid cancer cells, including microRNAs (miRNAs), by targeting histone deacetylase (HDAC). The expression of oncogenic genes decreased while tumor inhibitory genes expression increased significantly in cells treated with VPA.

Summary: Exposure to organophosphate compounds in rats led to an increase in HDAC protein expression and enzyme activity in the hippocampus, as well as a decrease in H3K9ac and BDNF protein levels. Treatment with an HDAC inhibitor showed promising results in reducing immobility time in the Forced Swim Test for rats exposed to organophosphates, suggesting potential new targets for the treatment of GWI symptoms.

Summary: This study identifies LINC00461 as a significantly increased lncRNA in stem-like/treatment-resistant GBM cells, and demonstrates that targeting the HDAC6/RBP axis through LINC00461 can suppress GBM cell proliferation and prolong patient survival.

Summary: Chlamydomonas reinhardtii has been genetically engineered for heterologous protein expression, but its ability to silence transgene expression through epigenetic changes hinders its further application. In this study, researchers discovered that treatment with HDAC inhibitors can revert transgene silencing and successfully trigger the expression of heterologous proteins in C. reinhardtii.

Summary: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy affecting women worldwide, with valproic acid showing promising potential in inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. Studies have demonstrated that VPA, a member of the group of histone deacetylase inhibitors, can modulate multiple signaling pathways and improve the effectiveness of current treatment methods for breast cancer.

Summary: Recombinant forms of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 and related viruses have proven difficult to produce with good yields in mammalian cells. However, through exploring new transient gene expression methods and a high-cell-density protocol using specific cells, researchers have successfully produced highly homogenous preparations of full-length spike protein with good yields. The efficient two-step affinity purification method developed in this study also contributed to the high productivity of the production process.

Summary: Fungal phytopathogens utilize chromatin remodeling to influence their infection and lifecycle in plants. Macrophomina phaseolina is a significant phytopathogenic fungus with described biological features, but its epigenetic mechanisms in development and virulence remain incompletely studied. The inhibition of histone deacetylases by valproic acid and sodium butyrate alters M. phaseolina's growth, morphology, and virulence.

Summary: Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs) show promising anti-cancer effects by inhibiting cell proliferation, with potential for synergistic interactions with cisplatin (CDDP) against luminal-like breast cancer (BC) cells altered in Notch1 activity levels. Lower Notch1 activity enhances cytotoxic effects of HDIs, while higher Notch1 activity reduces their efficacy. Combinations of CDDP and HDIs may exhibit additive or synergistic interactions, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy for Notch1-altered luminal BC.

Summary: This study evaluated the combination of bevacizumab, temsirolimus, and valproic acid in patients with advanced malignancies and found modest efficacy but significant toxicity. The study is the first to evaluate this combination and suggests potential for anticancer activity, but careful management of toxicity is necessary for future development.

Summary: This study revealed that VPA can block ischemic long-term potentiation (iLTP) in the hippocampal Schaffer collateral pathway by enhancing GABAA receptor and ERK phosphorylation, protecting against pathological synaptic plasticity induced by oxygen and glucose deprivation (OGD). Furthermore, in a photothrombotic ischemia (PTI) mouse model, VPA reduced brain infarct volume and motor dysfunction, and protected against ischemic injury by upregulating the GABAergic system and ERK phosphorylation.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential role and mechanism of valproic acid (VPA) in ischemic stroke. The results showed that VPA could inhibit ischemic long-term potentiation (iLTP) by enhancing GABAA receptors and ERK phosphorylation, which led to a reduction in brain infarct volume and motor dysfunction. Additionally, VPA protected against ischemic injury by rescuing GABAergic deficiency and reducing matrix metalloproteinase expression.

Summary: The study revealed that o-OH-VPA effectively inhibited the survival of HeLa cells and increased cell doubling time without exhibiting toxicity toward normal cells. o-OH-VPA acted as an HDACI in HeLa cells, affecting p21 expression and caspase-3 activity to arrest the cell cycle.

Summary: Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells are widely used in biopharmaceutical production, but their names might not accurately represent their genetic identity. A new naming system is proposed in this article to provide more relevant information about CHO cells, which could enhance interpretation and comparability between laboratories with substantial discussions among community members.
