Osseointegration of metallic implants used in orthopedic surgery requires that osteoprogenitor cells attach and adhere to the surface, then proliferate, differentiate into osteoblasts, and finally produce mineralized matrix. Because the ability of progenitor cells to attach to a scaffold surface during early stages is important in the development of new tissue structures, we developed in our laboratory, a strategy involving grafting of implants with a polymer of sodium styrene sulfonate (polyNaSS) used as a scaffold which enables human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) interactions. In the present study, we investigated the cellular response of hMSCs to polyNaSS surfaces of titanium (Ti). In particular, cell proliferation, cell viability, cell differentiation, and cell spreading were evaluated. Results showed that cell proliferation and cell viability did not differ with any statistical significance between modified and unmodified Ti surfaces. Interestingly, culture of MSCs on polyNaSS surfaces resulted in a significant increase of cell spreading and cell differentiation compared with the other tested surfaces. These results suggest that titanium surface grafted with polyNaSS is a suitable scaffold for bone tissue engineering. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Biomed Mater Res Part A, 2013.

Inhibition of Escherichia Virus MS2, Surrogate of SARS-CoV-2, via Essential Oils-Loaded Electrospun Fibrous Mats: Increasing the Multifunctionality of Antivirus Protection Masks

Joana M. Domingues, Marta O. Teixeira, Marta A. A. Teixeira, David Freitas, Samira F. da Silva, Shafagh D. Tohidi, Rui D. V. Fernandes, Jorge Padrao, Andrea Zille, Carla Silva, Joana C. Antunes, Helena P. Felgueiras

Summary: This study proposes incorporating antiviral essential oils (EOs) into intermediate layers of face masks to enhance their effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2. Lemongrass, eucalyptus, and Niaouli oils were found to be the most effective against viral particles. PCLbEOs mats, prepared through electrospinning, showed superior mechanical and thermal stability, effectively preventing virus infiltration and inhibiting its action.

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Functionalized with Fucoidan: a Potential Theranostic Nanotool for Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Frederic Geinguenaud, Odile Sainte-Catherine, Florence Poirier, Valerie Besnard, Oualid Haddad, Frederic Chaubet, Yoann Lalatonne, Didier Lutomski, Angela Sutton, Laurence Motte

Summary: This study compared the bioactivity of free fucoidan and fucoidan-loaded nanoparticles in human hepatoma cells. The results showed that nanoparticles reduced cell invasion and migration, while free fucoidan increased these events at low concentrations. Moreover, nanoparticles decreased the production of reactive oxygen species and the activity of matrix metalloproteinase-9 compared to free fucoidan. Proteomic analysis revealed that fucoidan regulated proteins associated with protein synthesis, N-glycan processing, and cellular stress.

A Concise Review on the Potential Applications of Rugulopteryx okamurae Macroalgae

Ligia Barcellos, Christopher K. Pham, Gui Menezes, Raul Bettencourt, Nieta Rocha, Miguel Carvalho, Helena P. Felgueiras

Summary: The invasive species Rugulopteryx okamurae, a brown macroalgae, has been found in European waters and the Strait of Gibraltar. Its proliferation poses significant threats to local ecosystems and results in a socioeconomic burden due to the accumulation of biomass as waste. Researchers have explored using the algae biomass in value-added products or technologies to minimize its impact. This review highlights the potential uses of R. okamurae, such as biogas production, composting, bioplastic, and pharmaceutical purposes.

Emerging Antimicrobial and Immunomodulatory Fiber-Based Scaffolding Systems for Treating Diabetic Foot Ulcers

Helena P. P. Felgueiras

Summary: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are complex and severe complications of diabetes, often exacerbated by inflammation and infections. Current dressing systems combined with antibiotic or immunomodulatory therapies have limitations in fighting microbial presence and providing a suitable environment for wound healing. Research in this field has rapidly expanded in recent years to develop new and more effective therapeutic systems for DFU care. This review compiles emerging innovations in DFU dressing systems using fiber-based scaffolds modified with bioactive compounds, focusing on advancements from 2017 to 2022.

Summary: The study used an immunogenic material, metakaolin, as an alternative spacer in the Masquelet model and found that the metakaolin-induced membranes had higher osteogenic activity and a significant expansion of the macrophage population, supporting bone regeneration more effectively than PMMA-induced membranes.

Cytotoxicity of V-Prep Versus Phosphoric Acid Etchant on Oral Gingival Fibroblasts

Victor Ghoubril, Sylvie Changotade, Didier Lutomski, Joseph Ghoubril, Carole Chakar, Maher Abboud, Louis Hardan, Naji Kharouf, Elie Khoury

Summary: The effect of V-prep and a conventional acid etchant on oral gingival fibroblast cells was compared. The results showed that V-prep caused less cell damage and higher cell viability at lower concentrations and shorter application times. Therefore, V-prep can be used as a practical alternative in dentistry.

Sodium alginate/polycaprolactone co-axial wet-spun microfibers modified with N-carboxymethyl chitosan and the peptide AAPV for Staphylococcus aureus and human neutrophil elastase inhibition in potential chronic wound scenarios

Summary: In chronic wound (CW) scenarios, Staphylococcus aureus-induced infections are very prevalent. This leads to abnormal inflammatory processes, in which proteolytic enzymes, such as human neutrophil elastase (HNE), become highly expressed. A co-axial drug delivery system was developed to incorporate the antimicrobial peptide AAPV, which can suppress HNE activity, and release it controlled by N-carboxymethyl chitosan (NCMC), an antimicrobial polymer effective against Staphylococcus aureus.

Summary: The purpose of this research was to analyze the morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of PVA-based electrospun mats reinforced with CA or CNC for wound dressings. Crosslinking slightly increased the nanofibers' diameters while maintaining their bead-free morphology. The addition of CA and CNC improved the thermal and mechanical properties of the mats.

Summary: Wound infection is a major obstacle to adequate healing, especially in burn wounds and chronic wounds. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are effective antimicrobial agents used in wound dressings, but their cytotoxicity and potential neurotoxic effects are concerns. This study proposes two strategies to immobilize and increase the concentration of AgNPs in wound dressings to avoid systemic cytotoxicity and enhance their antimicrobial properties. The effectiveness of the composite materials against bacteria and a bacteriophage was tested, providing insights into their antimicrobial capabilities and the release of AgNPs.

Summary: Infection is a major issue in chronic wound care. This research aims to find an effective solution for preventing microbial propagation in wound dressing. Polyvinyl alcohol nanofibrous mats reinforced with cellulose nanocrystal, crosslinked with glutaraldehyde vapor, and doped with specialized peptides were produced. Antimicrobial assessments demonstrated the effectiveness of the peptide-doped mats against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. C90/10 PVA/CNC mats were deemed the most effective option.
