Summary: The study found that polysulfone-based anion and cation exchange membranes have the lowest resistance, highest ion exchange capacities, and ionic conductivities, while polystyrene-based anion exchange and poly(butadiene-co-styrene)-based cation exchange membranes have higher tensile strengths. The chloromethylation method using a mixture of formaldehyde and HCl improved the resistance, ion exchange capacity, and ionic conductivity properties of AEMs compared to other methods.

Summary: A novel diamide ligand, 5-bromo-N1, N3-diisopropylisophthalamide, was synthesized and characterized, and its extraction mechanism with uranyl ions in various ionic liquid families was studied. Changing the ionic liquid system can achieve different extraction mechanisms, predominantly influenced by the cations of the ionic liquids. The study found that the back extraction of uranyl ions from the ionic liquids is better with sodium carbonate compared to EDTA and oxalic acid, but the efficacy varies among different ionic liquid systems.

Summary: In this study, epichlorohydrin functionalized by three different cations were used to modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to prepare a series of PVA based anion exchange membranes (AEMs). The AEM modified by piperidine cation exhibited continuous ion channels and obvious microphase separation structure, resulting in an OH- conductivity of 94.13 mS cm(-1) at 80°C and relatively good alkali resistance (87.16%, 360 h). Crosslinking by p-phthalaldehyde effectively lowered the swelling ratio, increased the thermal stability and improved the mechanical properties of the AEMs.

Summary: The traditional methods for purifying extracellular vesicles have limitations such as induced aggregation, low yields, poor scalability, and one-dimensional separation process. Ion exchange chromatography, especially anion exchange chromatography, has been evaluated as a promising alternative for extracellular vesicle purification. However, cation exchange chromatography could also be applicable due to cationic domains on the vesicle surface. The choice of resin structure for cation exchange chromatography is critical, as the conventional-type cation exchanger only captures and elutes less than 20% of extracellular vesicles, while the tentacle-type resin can achieve comparable yields and superior purity when combined with conventional cation exchange resin.

Summary: This study focused on developing anion exchange membranes (AEMs) with high alkaline stability and hydroxide conductivity by functionalizing fluorene units with dual pairs of quaternary piperidinium cations. The AEMs with bisPip side chains demonstrated superior conductivity and alkaline stability compared to AEMs with monoPip cations per fluorene unit, highlighting the advantage of locally concentrating the cations in the polymer structure.

Summary: Research on developing direct lithium extraction technologies from aqueous sources is important due to the limitations of the currently used evaporitic technology. Electromembrane processes are a promising alternative as they are faster, more adaptable, and sustainable compared to traditional methods. Testing these methods with real brines is crucial for industrial-scale applications.

Summary: Vermiculite and micaceous minerals are important Cs+ sorbents in soils and sediments. The sorption of Cs+ onto clay minerals is influenced by the presence of K+, which can lead to Cs+ being locked into the mineral structure. Cs+ preferentially exchanges with Ca2+ rather than Mg2+.

Summary: The study shows that increasing the cation charge density of pyrrolidinium compounds can improve alkaline stability, but the long spacer between adjacent pyrrolidinium cations accelerates cation degradation. The synergetic effect between adjacent cations helps decrease the charge density in the pyrrolidinium groups, enhancing the energy barrier for OH attack and thus improving alkaline stability.
