Summary: Circular bioeconomy is a sustainable business model that allows for reuse, recycling, and recovery in the nutraceutical industry while considering environmental impact. Microalgae biotechnology has the potential to produce high-value compounds for various industries through bioremediation of waste streams. The focus has shifted from commercial strains to indigenous strains due to cost and climate limitations in Nordic regions. This review discusses the potential compounds and strains from a Nordic perspective.

Summary: The aim of this study is to develop a simulation model for the fractionation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) using urea complexation. The different complexation behaviors of SFAME, MFAME, and PFAME were observed, and a fractionation model was proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

Summary: Abnormalities in membrane phospholipids are considered to be one of the underlying causes of schizophrenia. This study examines the fatty acid composition of erythrocyte membranes in individuals at-risk of mental illness and those with a first-episode of schizophrenia, and links it to clinical characteristics. The results show that certain fatty acids were lower in both groups compared to healthy individuals, while nervonic acid levels were significantly higher. Oleic acid and nervonic acid levels were also associated with specific symptoms in both groups. These findings suggest that abnormal fatty acid compositions may be markers of vulnerability in the early stages of schizophrenia and in individuals at-risk of psychosis.

Summary: Neutrophils play a critical role in maintaining a stable immune system, but their hypo- or hyper-activation can lead to the onset or exacerbation of inflammatory conditions. Marine omega-3 fatty acids rapidly alter neutrophil function by changing their fatty acid composition, impacting eicosanoid synthesis, blocking transcription factors, and disrupting lipid rafts to reduce pro-inflammatory gene expression. Clinical trials in the past 15 years have shown the effects of marine omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on neutrophil function.

Summary: The association between dietary fat and fat quality and puberty timing is inconsistent. This study found that children with higher intakes of total fat and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) were more likely to reach puberty at an earlier age, while intakes of saturated fatty acid (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) were not independently associated with puberty development.

Summary: Studies suggest that the absence of soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) accelerates primary tumor growth and increases tumor macrophage count and angiogenesis in animals. However, there is no impact of sEH inhibition on the formation of metastases in the lymph node or lung.

Summary: This study demonstrated that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has a selective antiproliferative effect on gastric cancer (GC), primarily driven by apoptosis induction. DHA treatment consistently reduced tumor size, ascitic fluid volume, and liver metastasis in an in vivo mouse model. These findings provide promising potential for DHA as a therapeutic agent in GC.

Summary: It was found in the study that the supplementation of gilts with n-3 and n-6 enriched diets had significant effects on serum composition, fatty acid levels, and offspring weight compared to the control group. Offspring from gilts supplemented with n-3 had higher body weight, increased daily weight gain, and higher serum EPA levels. These results demonstrate the beneficial effects of PUFA-enriched cow's milk supplementation for the offspring of gilts.

Summary: The study analyzed the functions of four DGAT2s in industrial oleaginous thraustochytrid Aurantiochytrium, with results indicating that DGAT2C mainly connects PUFA to TAG molecules, while DGAT2A and DGAT2D target SFA and/or MUFA. This research demonstrates the specific TAG assembly routes in Aurantiochytrium, providing insights for designing TAG molecules with desired characteristics.

Summary: DHA and its 12-LOX oxylipins, 11-HDHA and 14-HDHA, attenuate platelet aggregation, inhibit IIb β3 activation, decrease α-granule secretion, impair platelet adhesion and accumulation, and inhibit thrombus formation. The protective mechanism of DHA oxylipins is mediated via activation of protein kinase A, supporting their use as therapeutic intervention in atherothrombotic diseases.

Summary: This article mainly discusses spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs), which are autosomal dominant diseases characterized by cerebellar atrophy and ataxia. It focuses on the SCA34 subtype, which is caused by specific mutations in the ELOVL4 gene. The study shows that these mutations lead to the production of shorter ultra-long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (ULC-PCs) in neurons, which may contribute to the pathogenesis and dominant inheritance of SCA34.

Summary: The study demonstrates that adding Aurantiochytrium sp. to diets can significantly improve the growth performance and immune response of Trachinotus ovatus. With increased microalgae content, the growth rate and feed utilization efficiency of fish were enhanced, along with increased fatty acid content in blood and tissues, resulting in improved immunity and disease resistance in fish.

Summary: 5-oxo-ETE is a proinflammatory substance with potent chemoattractant effects on eosinophils, potentially playing an important role in diseases like asthma. Selective indole-based OXE antagonists can inhibit allergen-induced inflammation in monkeys, suggesting potential therapeutic use in humans. Metabolic pathways for these antagonists were identified in liver microsomes, and the addition of a phenyl group reduced their metabolism rates and prolonged their half-lives in vivo.
