The self-healing behavior of a modified ureido-amide based thermoplastic hybrid elastomer was investigated by increasing the concentration of non-reversible (covalent) bonds compared to reversible (hydrogen) bonds. A crosslinked polymer network was synthesized using varying amounts of diglycidylether of bisphenol A and reacting with the ureido-amide thermoplastic. Increasing epoxy content produced a more rigid and thermally stable hybrid network, which in turn decreased overall thermo-reversible or healing behavior. Fracture toughness recoveries varied from 25% for the system containing the greatest number of covalent bonds to well over 200% for systems containing higher thermoplastic content. Substantial levels of healing, about 62% recovery, were still achieved despite the crosslinked network having a Tg above room temperature, 31 degrees C as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis was used to monitor thermo-reversible behavior of the elastic moduli and thus probe molecular mobility within the glassy state. The extent and rate of recovery of the elastic modulus was dominated by the extent of thermal activation above the glass transition temperature. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic and DSC studies confirmed that reacting the thermoplastic with an epoxy resin produced a covalently bonded crosslinked network and the epoxide groups were completely consumed. The Role of Antenatal and Postnatal Maternal Bonding in Infant Development

Genevieve Le Bas, George Youssef, Jacqui A. Macdonald, Samantha Teague, Richard Mattick, Ingrid Honan, Jennifer E. McIntosh, Sarah Khor, Larissa Rossen, Elizabeth J. Elliott, Steve Allsop, Lucinda Burns, Craig A. Olsson, Delyse Hutchinson

Summary: This study examined the impact of mother-to-infant bonding on infant development in a multi-wave longitudinal pregnancy cohort study. The results showed that a mother's perceived emotional connection with her child played a role in predicting social-affective outcomes, but had only small effects on cognitive, language, and motor development.

Chemically Accelerated Stabilization of a Cellulose-Lignin Precursor as a Route to High Yield Carbon Fiber Production

Nguyen-Duc Le, Mikaela Trogen, Russell J. Varley, Michael Hummel, Nolene Byrne

Summary: Producing carbon fiber from bio-based or renewable resources has attracted much attention in recent years. The stabilization process, which transforms the precursor fiber to withstand high temperatures, is a critical step. This study used thermogravimetric analysis to explore different stabilization profiles and investigated the influence of atmosphere, cellulose-lignin composition, and catalysts on carbon yield and stabilization rate. It was found that a phosphorus-based flame retardant greatly enhanced the char yield, doubling the amount produced.

Summary: This study investigates the differences between glycidyl ether and glycidyl amine crosslinked networks and compares the structure/property relationships of these networks in depth. The results show that despite some reduced mechanical and thermal properties, the NNE epoxy resin system is a very thermally stable high temperature epoxy resin suitable for a wide range of new applications.

Multiple Hydrogen Bond Channel Structural Electrolyte for an Enhanced Carbon Fiber Composite Battery

Jaehoon Choi, Omid Zabihi, Russell Varley, Jane Zhang, Bronwyn L. Fox, Minoo Naebe

Summary: Structural batteries made of carbon fiber composites have attracted significant attention in automotive applications. However, the electrolyte used in these batteries typically relies on highly volatile liquid electrolytes, which limits their performance. This study proposes a new type of structural battery electrolyte that is a two-phase system formed through reaction-induced phase transition. It combines a low flammability electrolyte with a solid additive to induce multihydrogen bonding. The optimized electrolyte demonstrates good ionic conductivity at ambient temperature and shows potential for application in carbon fiber composite structural batteries.

The effect of DOPO concentration and epoxy amine stoichiometry on the rheological, thermal, mechanical and fire-retardant properties of crosslinked networks

Seyed Mohsen Seraji, Houlei Gan, Nguyen-Duc Le, Juan Zhang, Russell J. Varley

Summary: This study investigated the effect of a phosphorus-based fire retardant on the thermal, rheological, mechanical properties, and flammability of an epoxyamine network. Increasing the concentration of the flame retardant improved fire resistance but reduced reactivity and thermal/mechanical properties. However, an excess amino stoichiometry had a comparatively positive effect on reactivity and thermal/mechanical properties.

Summary: This work presents the synthesis and characterization of highly aromatic bisoxazoline monomers with diphenyl ether, furan, and thiophene backbones. The impact of these moieties on polymerization and glass transition temperatures is studied through cure and reaction kinetics investigations. Two catalysts, methyl triflate and dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid, are used to explore their role in controlling the cationic ring-opening polymerization mechanism. The polymerization process is monitored and characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and kinetic modeling.
