Summary: This study investigated the properties of PLA and PHB biopolymer composites reinforced with thermally treated wood flour and determined the formulations with optimum properties using multi-criteria decision-making methods. The addition of both thermally treated and untreated wood flour slightly increased the density and decreased the mechanical properties of the composites. However, it improved the thermal stability. The study concluded that the neat PLA sample had the best properties.

Summary: Cashew nuts, mainly consumed as snacks, have gained interest in broken kernels for their added value. The study evaluated the antioxidant capacity and potential prebiotic effect of defatted cashew nut flour through simulated gastrointestinal digestion, showing significant increase in antioxidant capacity in the soluble digested fraction and potential prebiotic effect in the insoluble digested fraction. The high protein content and presence of antioxidant peptides make defatted cashew nut flour a promising functional food ingredient.

Summary: Cashew nut kernel oil (CNKO) was analyzed for its lipid species, composition, and relative content using UPLC-TOF-MS/MS. The physicochemical properties, functional group structure, and oxidation stability of CNKO at different pressing temperatures were characterized. The results showed that CNKO mainly consisted of oleic acid, linoleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid. The pressing temperature had a significant effect on the physicochemical properties and oxidative stability of CNKO. This study provided basic data for cashew kernel processing, quality evaluation, and functional studies.

Summary: This work explores an eco-friendly approach to extracting cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and refining cardanol from cashew nuts produced in Hainan, China. CNS, which is usually considered waste from agricultural processing, can be extracted into valuable CNSL using solvent extraction or supercritical CO2 extraction. The composition of extracted CNSL varies with different conditions, and less polar solvents extract more CNSL. Supercritical CO2 extraction also shows superior performance in CNSL extraction as an environmentally friendly method. CNSL from Hainan cashew nuts contains a high amount of anacardic acid. The extracted CNSL can be decarboxylated and separated to obtain a mixture of cardanol consisting of four olefins with different numbers of double bonds. Cardanol can be converted to saturated cardanol and high purity cardanol monoene through catalytic hydrogenation and catalytic transfer hydrogenation, respectively. Both saturated cardanol and cardanol monoene have promising prospects due to their chemical structure.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of kernel grade on the physicochemical quality, fatty acids, and volatile compounds of cashew nut oil. The broken kernel oils showed similar or superior quality to the whole kernel oil, especially samples B3 and P3. The oils from less intact nuts showed high proportions of monounsaturated fatty acids and higher proportions of volatile compounds not derived from oxidation in sample P3. This study expands the possibility of valorizing lower commercial value cashew nuts by producing oil with adequate quality for consumption.
