Summary: Kaolinite functionalized with mu-oxo Fe3+-phenanthroline complex was found to efficiently remove and store gaseous heptanethiol. The continuous catalytic activity of Fe3+ towards the oxidation of thiol to disulfide explained the significant removal of the smelly gas and the high thiol/Fe(3+)Phen molar ratio.

Summary: The research focuses on the reactive compatibilization of nylon 11 (PA11) and polypropylene (PP) using maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP-g-MA) through an extruder. By utilizing polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a dispersion agent, successful dispersion of the PP phase in PA11 was achieved, aiding in controlling the consistent interaction of phases.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of homogeneously modified (HM) and Janus silica nanoparticles on the thermostimulative shape memory effect in high-density polyethylene/poly(ethylene terephthalate) blend-based polymer nanocomposites. The results demonstrate that the physical/mechanical characteristics of the polymer/polymer interface play a crucial role in defining the shape memory effect. The Janus nanoparticles are synthesized through a two-step desymmetrization process, while a single-step modification procedure is used for homogenous modification. The samples containing Janus nanoparticles exhibit the strongest shape memory effect.

Summary: The use of carbon nanotubes with varying chemistry (diblock nanotubes) at the PS/PMMA interface can increase fracture toughness, while single-chemistry nanotubes do not have a reinforcing effect. However, the presence of agglomerates of carbon nanotubes may limit their effectiveness in toughening the interface.

Summary: To expand the range of applications and overcome mechanical limitations of Polypropylene (PP), toughness modification is required. In this study, PP was toughened with ethylene octene copolymer (EOC) and nanoclay platelets and the effect of different grades of EOC, the addition of nanoclay platelets, and the effect of compatibilizer on properties of the final system were investigated. The results showed that different grades of EOC had a significant impact on droplet size and final properties of the blend sample. The addition of nanoclay and compatibilizer played an important role in improving the final properties of the system.

Summary: High-performance SEBS/TPU blends containing SEBS-b-TPU and clay were obtained by melt mixing, resulting in improved morphology, mechanical, thermal, rheological, and abrasion behavior. The addition of SEBS-b-TPU reduced the domain size of the TPU phase and the presence of clay further enhanced mixing, leading to increased degradation temperatures and improved mechanical and rheological properties. The abrasion resistance of the blends was significantly enhanced by the presence of SEBS-b-TPU/clay, attributed to the dispersion of clay platelets in nanoscales and enhanced interfacial adhesion.

Summary: Polyimide matrix nanocomposites have gained attention for their high thermal stability, good interfacial bonding, light weight, and good wear resistance and corrosion, making them suitable for aerospace and advanced equipment applications. The use of nanofillers such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxide, clay, and alumina has been studied to improve the properties of polyimide nanocomposites. This study focused on the interaction between clay and graphene to enhance thermal stability. The addition of clay improved the thermal decomposition temperature by 50 degrees C and increased the decomposition temperature of the char formed in air atmosphere by 80 degrees C.

Summary: Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a widely produced biobased, biodegradable and biocompatible polyester. Although it shares similarities with petroleum-based polymers, its high brittleness and low toughness limit its utilization, prompting the blending with other biobased and biodegradable polymers. By incorporating appropriate additives and solid nanoparticles, the toughness and ductility of PLA can be improved, enhancing its mechanical performance, thermal stability and gas/vapor barrier properties.

Summary: In this study, an innovative approach for fabricating efficient electromagnetic shielding material by tuning the microstructure of the filler in a flexible PDMS polymer matrix is presented. The magnetic property is found to be changed significantly by transforming the microstructure from solid to hollow. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness is further enhanced by the addition of reduced graphene oxide. The dielectric and magnetic properties of the composite can be altered by varying the mass ratio of the precursors.
