Summary: In this study, experimental design methodology was used to prepare polystyrene based polyHIPE nanocomposites with reinforced surface modified nanoclay. The presence of modifier groups on the nanoclay surface did not compromise emulsion stability. A total of 36 samples were produced to determine the relationship between emulsion preparation conditions and final polyHIPE properties, revealing the interactions of experimental parameters and deriving empirical model equations for each property.

Summary: A major challenge in the industrialization of polymer-clay nanocomposites at high processing temperatures is the thermal degradation of the matrix induced by the commercial organoclays. This work investigated the use of a styrene-acrylic multi-functional oligomeric chain extender to address the thermal degradation of PET nanocomposites and improve their microstructure. The introduction of the chain extender significantly improved the morphology of the nanocomposites containing Nanomer particles and enhanced their resistance to degradation.

Summary: This paper evaluates the abrasion resistance of a carbon fiber composite filled with layered-silicate clay nanoparticles. The study investigates the dispersion and performance of the clay-epoxy nanocomposite, and determines the optimal content for fiber composite production. The nanocomposite mixture is prepared by dispersing clay nanoparticles in the epoxy monomer, followed by vacuum infusion to produce the fiber reinforced composite. The presence of nanoclay reduces weight loss and damage on the impacted surface.

Summary: In this study, a polypropylene random copolymer (rPP) and polypropylene/ethylene-propylene-diene monomer graft copolymer (gPP) were added to improve the poor low-temperature tensile properties of polypropylene (PP). The results showed that the addition of rPP reduced the size of PP spherulites and improved the interfacial cohesion of the PP/POE blend, resulting in better tensile properties and melt flow rate. The effects of injection molding process parameters on the mechanical properties and phase morphology of rPP-modified PP/POE blends were also investigated.

Summary: In this study, colorless and transparent polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films were synthesized by dispersing organoclay in poly(amic acid) through a solution intercalation method. The thermomechanical properties and morphology of the films were investigated with different content of organoclay. It was found that the film with a 0.50 wt% organoclay content exhibited the best physical properties, while the properties deteriorated when the organoclay content exceeded a critical content.

Summary: This article proposes a method using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)) to obtain compostable bionanocomposite foams based on PLA and organoclay. The foams showed a closed cell and uniform cell structure with enhanced thermal stability and improved overall mechanical performance. The water uptake behavior demonstrated that the foams had low water absorption, and they also disintegrated under composting conditions. Therefore, these bionanocomposite foams seem to be a promising sustainable alternative for applications such as food packaging.

Summary: In this study, halloysite nanotubes (HNT) were modified and incorporated with epoxy resin to prepare nanocomposite materials with enhanced mechanical properties. The use of APTES and two-step modified HNT with DGEBA significantly increased the tensile strength and strain at break of the nanocomposites, improving their mechanical performance.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of organoclay type and feeding mode on the properties and morphology of a model ternary blend nanocomposite. The results show that the organoclays are mainly localized in the PMMA matrix and the feeding sequence and the affinity of organoclays towards different components determine the morphology of the nanocomposite.

Summary: The influence of soft segment content on the functional properties of polyurethane network/organoclay nanocomposites was studied. Decreasing soft segment content led to a higher degree of phase separated microstructure and improvements in multiple properties, while also reducing crosslinking density and hydrophobicity.

Summary: This study investigated the properties of OMMT filled EVA/NBR nanocomposites, finding that an increase in gel content can enhance the elastic modulus and yield stress, while decreasing the strain-at-break. Moreover, the tensile strength and modulus exponentially increased with strain, but the energy-at-break decreased with gel content. Additionally, changes in relaxation time and crystalline peak intensity ratio were observed with increasing gel content in the materials' structure and rheological behavior.

Summary: PET/clay nanocomposites have been widely studied, but in this work PET homopolymer and two PET copolymers were prepared as matrices with a commercial organoclay. The thermal behavior of these materials was investigated, showing that the presence of clay decreased the glass transition temperature and thermal stability while not affecting the degree of crystallinity. The modified Avrami model was used for non-isothermal crystallization kinetics, proving to be a good choice for simulations under processing conditions.

Summary: This study presents the thermal and flammability properties of ethylene vinyl acetate/starch/organoclay (EVA/S/C20A) nanocomposites. The nanostructured systems were observed through wide-angle X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The intercalation of organoclay layers with EVA polymer achieved compatibility between the three components, providing thermal degradation protection. The nanocomposites showed self-extinguishing capacity in the flammability tests, attributed to the nanointercalation of clay and the compatibility among the components.

Summary: The research focuses on minimizing the dielectric and mechanical losses of natural rubber films to improve the efficiency of dielectric elastomer generators. Deproteinized NR stabilized by natural proteins outperformed unmodified NR in reducing dielectric losses and mechanical hysteresis. Posttreatment methods were found to moderately reduce material-related losses.
