Take-home naloxone programs for suspected opioid overdose in community settings: a scoping umbrella review

Summary: Naloxone programs, especially 'take-home naloxone', have emerged as a key intervention in reducing opioid overdose deaths. Existing systematic reviews and best practice guidelines mainly focus on naloxone effectiveness, safety, provision feasibility, dosing and routes of administration, overdose response after naloxone administration, cost-effectiveness, training and education, as well as recommendations for policy, practice, and knowledge gaps.

Physicochemical Analysis of Cold Brew and Hot Brew Peaberry Coffee

Summary: Peaberry coffee is a rare type of coffee bean, accounting for only 5-7% of coffee production. It has smaller, denser beans with a domed shape. Due to its unique development, peaberry coffee is believed to be sweeter, lighter, and more flavorful. This study investigates the acidity and antioxidant activity of peaberry coffee from different regions.

Optimization of Cold Brew Coffee Using Central Composite Design and Its Properties Compared with Hot Brew Coffee

Summary: The trend of cold brew coffee (CBC) is increasing globally, but there is limited research on this popular beverage. This study aimed to investigate the effects of brewing conditions on the physicochemical properties of CBC and compare it with coffee brewed by the French Press method. The results showed that water temperature, coffee-to-water ratio, and coffee mesh size significantly influenced the total dissolved solids (TDS) of CBC. At similar TDS, CBC had higher caffeine content, volatile compounds, and organic acids compared to the French Press coffee.

The effect of post-brew holding time and carafe type on the sensory properties of drip brew coffee

Summary: This study compared the flavor changes of different roast levels of coffee under different thermal storage methods. The results showed that acidity increased over time, but only for light and medium roasts. The storage method had an impact on the flavor of light and dark roasts, but had little effect on the medium roast. Surprisingly, coffee industry professionals showed no preference for fresh or held coffee.

Sensory Analysis of Full Immersion Coffee: Cold Brew Is More Floral, and Less Bitter, Sour, and Rubbery Than Hot Brew

Summary: This systematic study investigates the impact of extraction temperature on the sensory qualities of full immersion coffee. The results show that different brew temperatures significantly affect the bitterness, sourness, rubber flavor, and floral flavor of coffee, with strong interactions with origin and roast levels.

Identification of compounds that enhance bitterness of coffee brew

Summary: The study used nontargeted LC/MS flavoromics analysis to identify compounds that enhance the bitter perception of roasted coffee brew. The OPLS analysis successfully modeled the chemical profiles and sensory bitter intensity ratings of fourteen coffee brews, revealing five compounds that significantly enhance the bitter perception of coffee when presented as a mixture. These compounds were found to be generated during the coffee roasting process.

Identification of coffee compounds that suppress bitterness of brew

Summary: Utilizing untargeted LC-MS flavoromic profiling, three compounds that can decrease the bitterness of coffee were identified. The relationship between chemical composition and perceived bitterness intensity was modeled by OPLS, revealing ten chemical markers highly predictive and negatively correlated to bitter intensity. Through multi-dimensional preparative LC-MS, three compounds were confirmed as bitter modulators in coffee, significantly reducing the perceived bitterness intensity of the brew.

Effects of grind size and brew time upon sensory traits, consumer likability and antioxidant activity of Arabica cold brew

Summary: This study found that grind size significantly affects the antioxidant activity of cold brew coffee, while brew time has important effects on sensory traits, consumer likability, and antioxidant activity. Notably, samples brewed for 24 hours showed lower sensory traits and antioxidant activity compared to those brewed for 18 or 30 hours.

A new Coffee Brewing Control Chart relating sensory properties and consumer liking to brew strength, extraction yield, and brew ratio

Summary: The classic Coffee Brewing Control Chart (BCC) was developed in the 1950s and widely used in the coffee industry. However, recent studies have shown that sensory attributes and consumer preferences are more complex than indicated by the classic BCC. This study presents new versions of the BCC, including a Sensory BCC, a Consumer BCC, a Sensory and Consumer BCC, and a streamlined BCC, to provide more accurate guidance for brewing coffee.

Market effects of new product introduction: Evidence from the brew-at-home coffee market

Summary: This paper empirically studies the market effects of new product introduction in the brew-at-home coffee market by analyzing retail coffee data spanning 5 years after the single-cup brew coffee pods were introduced to grocery chains. The analysis reveals that the introduction of the new product expanded the market while also cannibalizing the sales of pre-existing substitute products, and quantifies the welfare gains of the average consumer attributable to the new product.

Comparison of Characterization of Cold Brew and Hot Brew Coffee Prepared at Various Roasting Degrees

Summary: This investigation aimed to study the effects of roasting degree and extraction method on coffee beverages from Asia. The results showed that as the roasting degree increased, there was a decrease in titratable acidity, total phenolic compounds, chlorogenic acid and trigonelline concentrations, and total antioxidant capacity. Cold coffee beverages had higher total sugar and trigonelline. The volatile components and sensory properties were also influenced by roasting degree and extraction methods. Principal component analysis indicated a distinct difference in coffee characterization between cold and hot brews in terms of roasting degree. This study suggests that roasting degree plays a more significant role in coffee quality than extraction temperature.

Summary: This study investigated the acceptability of different naloxone devices among target populations in addiction treatment, harm reduction, and recovery services in 5 European countries. The findings showed that most respondents considered the concentrated nasal naloxone spray the easiest device to use, but the overall carriage rate of naloxone kits was low.

Summary: Opiate abuse increases the risk of HIV transmission and exacerbates HIV neuropathology. This study investigates the differential expression of miRNA in exosomal EVs in PBMCs infected with HIV in the context of opiate use. The findings suggest that HIV infection and opiate exposure can alter miRNA profiles and potentially identify therapeutic targets for opiate use disorder and HIV neuropathology.
